Survival Hunter Specs: A self analysis.
Derchlon — Fri, 12/26/2008 - 00:00
So, When I first started raiding in Wrath, I figured that I had found a good 0/17/54 spec to work with(http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZceV0oZe00iocIhxuAhcd). After a couple weeks of raiding, I'm finding that this spec has been alright, but I'm trying to push for better. Reading the EJ forums, I've been keeping up with the latest in SV theorycraft, and this is what I'm finding: The modern SV hunter should be as close to melee distance as possible, while still being able to loose arrows. What I'm speaking of, is called Trap Dancing. The idea that dropping a trap on a boss will proc LnL(http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=56344), causing you to use your highest damage ability, Explosive Shot (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=60053) more often.
Before I had thought about trap dancing, I respecced into a 0/19/52 build (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZ0eVbohZe00iocIhxuAhcz) due to my very high hit rating, which netted me ~20,000 extra damage on the Archavon kill from this past week. I'm thinking with all the synergy of the stings, LnL, and Explosive Shot, the idea of adding another wrinkle to the list of accents could be really good for extra dps.
The process of a trap dance involves standing close enough to the boss(right behind the melee), in order to drop an immolation trap, proc LnL, step back with a tap, then unload 3 Explosive Shots. With Serpent Sting up, more chances to proc LnL exist, for more triple explosive shot damage. A typical rotation would be as follows:
1. Serpent Sting
2. Explosive Shot
3. (If you aren't in position yet, Aimed Shot, if you are, move on to step 4)
4. Immolation Trap
5. tap your back button to get back to range
6. Blast away with Explosive Shot
7. Steady Shot until Explosive Shot is off CD or Serpent sting falls off(if it falls off, replace your next Steady Shot with a Serpent Sting.)
Working with that, I've compiled a new spec that I'd like to try out. 0/18/53 (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZ0eVoohZe00i0cIhedAhod). This spec has the improved stings, and improved trap abilities for shorter CDs and improved Immolation trap damage. Considering that most of the fights in current end game are close and clustered, it seems like Sniper Training (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=53304) is wasted. Putting those points into Resourcefulness adds shorter CDs, and makes the traps less of a drain on mana. Also gives the SV 41 point talent a use, with 30% increased immolation damage, which has been reported from the 3.08 test realm to be upwards of 5k damage alone.
I'm not a fan of being close to the melee, it doesn't feel like something a hunter should be doing. But if the DPS is higher, there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to try it on for size and see how it goes. The different specs are below for reviewing pleasure.
1. 0/17/54(http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZceV0oZe00iocIhxuAhcd) Notables: 3% more to hit, Scatter Shot, slightly higher Expose Weakness uptime
2. 0/19/52(http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZ0eVbohZe00iocIhxuAhcz) Notables: 30% more Sting damage, Scatter Shot, 50 more pet focus per crit, slightly higher Expose Weakness uptime. NO REPLENISHMENT BUFF.
3. 0/18/53(http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZ0eVoohZe00i0cIhedAhod) Notables: 30% more Sting damage, 30% more immolation trap damage, 6 second shorter trap CD, 25 more pet focus per crit.
Last minute thoughts: Being in close range, if might be better to toss two points from Hawk Eye into Savage Strikes, for a quick melee swing while I'm setting the immolation trap.
Take a chance for a good time.

The el oh el Hunter.

Hunters have been mocked as being one of the "easiest" classes to play in WoW by many people. So much so, that they gained a nickname to demonstrate this lack of skill: Huntard. What these people don't realize, is all of the thought processing that a good hunter has to go through in order to maximize DPS.
The naturally built in damage that a hunter gets is Autoshot. Autoshot takes .5 seconds to fire, but has a cooldown based on weapon speed. Hunter's have several shots in their spell book, that are used regularly, that do damage besides the naturally built in Autoshot. These include Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot, Multishot, and Steady Shot. While Aimed Shot does the most damage of the three, it has the longest cast time with 3 seconds as well as restarting the autoshot timer. This means that its really only good for an opening shot with Misdirection, or a fight where you REALLY need the Mortal Strike debuff that it brings to the table. Arcane Shot is an instant shot that deals decent damage, and Multishot is essentially an instant cast as well, that does damage to three targets and is about on par in damage with Arcane shot. Steady Shot is a 1.5 second cast shot that does decent damage, but it is your most mana/damage efficient shot. The biggest problem with Steady Shot, is that while casting that 1.5 second shot, your autoshot cannot fire, and thus, cannot start its cooldown time. You will want to use this shot as often as you reasonably can.
How to grind rep with the Derchlon faction:

Alright so its late, its been an interesting day for me, and I'm not entirely coherent right now. That means this is the perfect time to give all of you a good way to grind your way to Exalted status with Derchlon. This is just an on the fly list of things I like, and conversation topics that I relish.
1. Baseball. I enjoy people who can discuss the inner strategy of a 3-1 ground ball to shortstop, and why the hitter got fooled by the high heat again when it was the last two pitches thrown. Common phrases from these people include "I just said that! These announcers should give me their job," and "I knew they should have benched that guy earlier" Also, trash talking Bill Bavasi with an intelligent reason is worth bonus rep.
2. Misa Campo. She happens to be one of the most attractive women I've ever seen. Way back before I got involved in WoW, I was labeled as "The guy who really likes Misa Campo" on a message board I was on. I pretty much pushed her image on the site before she was as known as she is now, and now she's decently popular. Chances are if you've heard of her before, thank me for it. She's best known for her picture in the green shirt with the sprite logo. Have fun on Google Images ;).
3. Hypothetical situations. These can't just be simple "what if we replaced a mage with a boomkin?" kind of questions, they need to have more meaning, and likewise, consequences. A good example is as follows: Two girls love you very much, but you only love one of those girls in return. However, if you choose to be with the one you love, the other is banished and tortured for eternity, but if you pick the one you don't love, you can never see the one you DID love ever again. So, which do you choose?
4. Quoting from movies in common conversations. This is self explanatory. If its from a movie, and its in the conversation, done deal.

This is one of those few times that a comedy skit made me laugh until I had a headache.
