All Mount's changed to Ground mounts- where flying is prohibited

Elapsed — Fri, 03/14/2014 - 19:19

Design decision of the week: We are going to enable all mounts to work in battlegrounds with #Warlords.

— Mumper (@mumper) March 14, 2014

Note, it means that we will enable all mounts to be used on the ground. Still can't fly in them. :)

— Mumper (@mumper) March 15, 2014

Note, this should mean that those mounts will work on the ground anywhere that flying is not allowed. Timeless Isle for example.

— Mumper (@mumper) March 15, 2014

Now this is originally and obviously angled at BGs and PvPers, but the wording of that last tweet is such that they imply non BG areas. We can infer from this that they are seriously setting up to have a flightless expansion (completely)

Hayae — Wed, 03/12/2014 - 19:25

I've played vanilla, and have since played other MMOs, most of which have been relatively restricted movement-wise; while I would miss it. I'm perfectly okay with a expansion without flying; at times, I already find it faster to move by stealth, via speed abilities to avoid mobs and hostile horde. I like sneaking around like a ninjacow, in general. I don't get why people are always in a hurry nowadays.

Jobs — Mon, 03/10/2014 - 07:13

My quick opinion: No flying during majority of questing/leveling.  Once a certain criteria is met (whether it be hitting a certain level or rep'ing up, or spending your hard earned gold) you can fly again.  A lovely reward at the end of leveling an expansion.

You should read the full thing again Jobs. Your vote would be YES for flying then. Flying has always been gated to level cap for at least your first character. The devs have said they are putting flying in at 6.1 patch, but have hinted to no flying for the WHOLE expansion in Draenor.

Painhax — Sun, 03/09/2014 - 19:02

I love flying. .simply because I love flying. I look at everything I can while questing and love it. I also look at everything while flying. I've killed rares over and over in every zone and I've seen every part of pandari. I also am not afraid to land and pvp but I do agree that with all the connected bullshit that collecting mats and world pvp are not even close to the same especially when you see a *by their name. Honestly I will play wod and have fun but I would prefer to keep flying.

I voted no to flying for purely selfish reasons.   I hate when someone rez's and fly;s off when i;m trying to kill them.   Flying mounts killed world pvp.  I want it back.  (go ahead call me a douchbag,   But this is where i enjoy the game the most,  If you don';t like it feel free to post here and I will be glad to hunt you down and silence you :P )

Aeolyn — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 20:47

For the record, I'm sure Blizzard already has their longterm plans for WoD flight sealed.

They either are doing this to test the waters of player outrage so that they can justify a whole expansion cycle without flight while reasonable objectors quietly wait under the promise that flight will return. When they switch gears to "No flight for all of WoD" everyone will have already bought and be invested in the expansion so sub loss won't be as severe as saying NO FLIGHT AT ALL up front before pre-orders or launch occurs.

OR the restricted flight for one content patch fits into the greater events of Draenor's storyline. They aren't doing this just to cause a fuss. I suspect that shit will hit the fan and the scope of the Draenor expansion will grow in a way that deems flight necessary but largely localized into 5.1 or 5.2 (or whatever) areas. Think Netherstorm.

As a note to Aeolyn's well

Elapsed — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 22:23

As a note to Aeolyn's well worded posts, the reason I worded the poll this way is because they have said that flying will be in 6.1, however in interviews they've hinted to not allowing it at all. On an extra note, a lot of the devs think flying was the worst thing they've added to the game. They feel, as Shatner has said, it takes away from the immersion when you just fly over things. And the Art crew REALLY hates flying because they spend so much time making shit look cool and we all end up flying over it.

Luminaire — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 23:04

Maybe if players had some time to actually go look at the environments like at the end of an expansion when all the content has been presented the art team would be pleased. I mean how can anyone find the time with a year of no new content to check out a continent let alone see it all in the two years the expansion has been out.  On another note there are plenty of players that spend a ton of time finding everything the lands have to offer. Just because they restrict means of travel doesn't make the other 95% of the player base actually want to do the same.

Aeolyn's picture

The devs can feel what they

Aeolyn — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 22:41

The devs can feel what they want. Honestly, the world would need some major overhauls to make it as interesting as the devs seem to think it is. Players don't explore the world because they feel no incentive to do so. What kind of immersion did the Timeless Isle provide that would not have worked if you could fly there? Well, Censer ganking for one thing. We all know how much of a hit that was.

Their idea of an immersive experience on the Timeless Isle was Kill Cows Until You're Exhalted With This One NPC Because Reasons. Their idea on the Isle of Giants was Kill Dinosaurs For Bones Forever for a mount and minipet. Their idea on the Thunder Isle was...dailies, I guess? Hell, I don't know what the point of that outdoor zone was aside from the scenarios that fleshed out Lei Shen. That island was there mostly for narrative reasons. Oh, and another rep grind. Woo.

Blizzard does not know how to make the game world actually immersive but it sounds nice to say that it is. If you gave me a compelling reason to want to get down out of the air and investigate the surface world for cool things I would. But don't ground me and tell me that I'm going to have more fun this way because I've played that game before and you're wrong.

Aeolyn's picture

I'm unsure I would play a

Aeolyn — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 20:18

I'm unsure I would play a grounded expansion at this point. I paid my dues in vanilla. If they remove flying I hope they also remove all summoning stones and Warlock summoning -- as well as the LFD / LFR interface so that people are forced to manually run out to every raid and dungeon every single time. Let's see who still wants to be running around on the ground two months into the expansion then.

Being grounded like on the Timeless Isle or Thunder Isle does not make those areas more imerssive. It makes PVP happen -- which I would usually regard as a positive -- but now that we're vastly outnumbered by the Horde on our server cluster I see that as squarely bad. Have fun fighting over herbs against the Forgotten Coast Horde.

There are conflicting design interests in "We want to get players out into the world" and "Your mobility this expansion is greatly dampened because we say so." If WoD has no flying whatsoever prepare for an era for being semi-AFK in your Garrison waiting for a queue to pop.

Diyana — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 20:25

Professions will suck majorly without flying. Eff that crap. FLYING, FLYING, FLYING.

That said, I do enjoy exploring the worlds and seeing things when I have the time and when I do I explore and look around and enjoy all the in game places to see. But if I'm logged in just to collect things for my profession then I'm not on to fly around and explore, I'm logged in to get some mats collected as efficiently as I can and without flying that will be the opposite of efficient. Hell to the no. I don't have time to be on the ground every single time I'm logged into the game. Some days, weekdays especially, I don't have all freaking day to get things done. Flying is a utility that makes certain things much less of a hassle, it is needed IMO.

Mehguy's picture

No

Mehguy — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 19:32

Overall I voted no. HOWEVER, I'm fine with no flying during leveling.  It was like that during BC, Wrath and MoP and I thoroughly loved the leveling experience being able to see everything until I hit max lvl or did the quests to gain access to flying.  Cata leveling went WAY too fast and the only zone I really enjoyed was Deepholm.

I think if they tie it to the achievements (ie Loremaster of Draenor, completing all the normal quests in EVERY zone) THEN you can receive flying.  People whine because "omg they have flying so they steal all the quest items while im trying to level"  blah blah.  But that would be resolved if they had already done all the quests in the zone, and then it wouldnt be an issue because all they would really be doing is their dailies, which by that time, flying to complete daily quests IMO shouldnt affect the overall experience a person has in the respective zone anyways.

NOW, while this will allow people, here and on WoW forums, to whine and bitch "THAT MAKES IT A REQUIREMENT!!", the hell it does.  You have the CHOICE to do it, you are not being forced to do it.  If you want flying that bad, then go do it.  Not having flying still wont prevent you from farming, or doing  your dailies, but it will make your life harder.  So if you want your WoW life and experience to be easier, do the damn content that you bitch you never have enough of.

As I just mentioned, not having flying would make farming (with the connected realms and higher populations inc) almost impossible and be WAY too tedious.  And those that ARE able to farm because they have no life other than WoW will corner the markets, and players utilizing the AH to get what they need for mats/crafting will be way too pricey for some.  And yes, I know there are ways to get gold in WoW fairly easily, but it will make things more difficult for the "casual" player.  Plus, not everyone in WoW, especially the "casual" they are supposed to be catering towards, has the time to ride around on a mount and get maybe 20 of their particular herbs/nodes in an hour because everyone is on ground mounts camping certain spawn paths or having to deal with the amount of mobs near where they need to farm.

Not allowing flying will deter the casual gamer overall IMO, especially after they have it for almost 1/2 of their leveling experience up to 90.  People whine about being ganked all the time, and not having flying isn't going to make it better for the casual gamer.  Honestly it will make it worse, because now you cant hide behind a tree, rez, mount and fly away from the gankers.  Now you are stuck with a ground mount, and if there is a pali chasing you, you're screwed thanks to their personal crusader aura and you will be camped even worse.  Even if its not a pali, almost every class has some sort of speed buff and if they can get close enough to you, turtle shell and GG, camping continues.  They will get more backlash over not allowing flying mounts to continue than they would if they leave it alone, or at least allow access to it a higher level like BC/Wrath or tie it to achievments.

They have had flying in the game since Jan 15, 2007 (BC release).  They are continuing to release flying mounts in the blizz store, PLUS the CE mount coming with the game is a flying mount!  They wont remove flying from WoD/Draenor zone, it gives players (Aeolyn excluded) reason enough to not buy mounts or the CE of WoD/future expansions since they will not be allowed to use their flying mounts, that theyve spent money on, in 'current' content or to just fly around in SW while they are bored.  It would result in an overall loss of $$ on their end.

I don't doubt there will be restrictions, possibly serious restrictions, on flying in various aspects in WoD, but removing it from the expansion completely will NOT happen.

Flying doesn't allow us to enjoy the game to its full effect.

Shatner — Sat, 03/08/2014 - 18:48

Too much beauty and artwork is lost on flying mounts.  We skip over well-done landscapes without a second thought.  Never mind the random adventure and overall effort it takes to exlpore the place.  I selected the pvp portion only because it was a secondary reason to not fly; though, I do enjoy the world pvp experience--if only to kill Grasen in alliance or horde form.

Shatner's picture

Continuing my defense of the death of the flying mount

Shatner — Sun, 03/09/2014 - 06:16

The flying mount takes a game that is to be played solo and essentially makes the game a version of solitary confinement.  Flying mounts make it so we don't need each other anymore.  While on the ground you are bound by those around you to interact and depend on one another. While the Timeless Isle is aesthetically a form of Ambien, it also wouldn't benefit much from a flying mount.  On the island, I teamed up with or killed people that would otherwise not have been as accessible.  I am thankful to have met friends on that island that are reading these words.  Now it can be suggested these adventures might have occurred with the flying mount available, and I think that's true, but to a far lesser extent.  The reason World of Warcraft suffers player loss is not because you can't pick herbs faster, it's because of the death of the social experience.  In addition, I didn't see Elapsed saying there wouldn't be any flight points in WoD.  These days there's so many FP's one might not need a flying mount ever again.
