Elapsed Rages (Language warning)

This will be a semi-regular blog in which I explain what has been causing me to rage lately and explain why in as coherant as fashion as possible. THIS MAY PROVE TO OFFEND SOME! So that is your warning. I will not offend or talk shit about religions, sexes, sexuality, or politics. Those are too hot button of issues. What you will see/read from me are rages about the gamming community, The computing community, Peoples health POVs (such as anti-fluoridation or anti-vacination nuts) and some other topics. Feel free to reply, but I promise I wont be nice here. One of the downsides of being GM is you don't get to be angry enough, You have to try and keep people happy at all times... This can lead to an over abundance of stress and anger. I need to vent

Todays Topic

Next Gen Console Jumpers!

Allow me to explain the title before I contine with my rant/vent. These are people who at the mere sight of a demo of ONE aspect of a console, Jump Ship without seeing a second more of content. (you do not qualify for this if you jumped away from consoles all together because of some of this. If there's something about a console or product that royaly pisses you off. AND all of the other companies are doing the same thing. It's a smart move to stop buying completely)

Let's go in order here (Nintendo Lovers are free from this as the WiiU continues to try and serve a demographic that is a minority, but does it well)

Playstation 4!

Announced/Revealed Feb/20/2013

What you see here (and all of what we've seen of the hardware thus far) is the new controller. It has a screen of sorts on it and we will get to see how that can affect our game-play..... But that's all we got from Sony, This and a demo of games.... So let's be honest. This wasn't a Hardware reveal, This was a announcement with some games. Not a bad thing mind you.... yet people jumped ship for the, then un-announced, Xbox BECAUSE OF THIS REASON ALONE!

WHY ARE YOU SO DUMB?!?! E3 is just around the corner and if Sony is 35% as smart as they have been in the past THEY WILL SHOW YOU THE DAMN CONSOLE! For the love of shit! No one whos got 1/10th of a brain buys a console because of it's looks...... Why in the Fuck would you think that them not showing it means they think it's a weak end of their product?!?! WHY?!

So the world continues and here comes along May/21/2013

a.k.a. Xbox One

now, regardless of how many jokes you try and make about how Microsoft (MS) can't count. They announced the REVEAL of their new Console! Guess the fuck what they did?! THEY SHOWED YOU A GOD DAMNED CONSOLE AND WHAT THE HARDWARE CAN DO! Along with a nice demo of how the opperating system works with every aspect (not just gaming) of the console. We got to see "cut aways" of the hardware as they announced it. They were also nice enough to have a few games ready to show to demonstrate the graphically fidelity of the console....

Yet, here we go again "BUT TOM! WHERE THE FUCK ARE ALL OF THE GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS?!?! I DONT WATCH NETFLIX OR TV?!?! THEY MUST NOT HAVE GOOD GAMES THEN!"

I will not cap this, I will not yell this even.... This was a Hardware Reveal. A demonstration of the console's power, and amazing use of the OS and the new and VERY improved Kinect.

now I will yell a bit

"YOU CAN WAIT UNTIL E FUCKING 3 TO SEE SOME GAMES! IT'S LESS THAN 3 WEEKS AWAY! CALM THE FUCK DOWN"

and again we see people jumping ship (Like the new Blue, Lore, formerly of TankSpot) for Sony. Why? because they didn't get to see the game they wanted at a hardware reveal!

You people (as described in the previous sentance) are grade A MORONS!

Since Neither console is offering compatability with their previous games for their previous systems I'm not even coming close to addressing this. If this fast bothers you, Just jump Ship from consoles entierly please and shut the hell up.

EDIT #2

added link that says exactly what we thought as far as being able to play the old games would involve. Looks like Sony wants to try and Stream titles later (not sure how this would work with previously owned ones) I presume we may see something similar from MS in the future as well since they're offering distributed servers for game devs to make enhanced worlds.

If you aren't a fan of the whole "no more used games" bit, you have a very genuine complaint with the game devs (or possibly GameStop)

This is something they've (devs) been wanting for years with consoles. To kill Used games. Why? you may ask. Well they get no money from the resale of that game, and places like GameStop make upwards of 2000% profit from each used sale. This is a problem, for the devs only, that makes piracy look like a small fly. While I don't like this practice, were stuck in this world unless you boycott the next gen of consoles. (I promise if Sony wants to keep the devs around for them, they will announce this soon, otherwise you'll see MANY more exclusives for MS)

Also the consoles are going to be tiny, if you're going to a friends house and want to play a game with them that you own.... PICK UP THE GOD DAMNED CONSOLE YOU LAZY FUCK AND BRING IT OVER! It's not like the 360 or PS3 were all that big/heavy either.

EDIT ADDITION TO ABOVE

Seems MajorNelson was good enough to clear up some facts regarding used games and going over to a friends house on his blog (Thanks to Saedo on posting it)

Xbox One and Used Games

We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

This is great news and clears up a lot of the confusion and complaints I heard on the day of the REVEAL

So let's try a TL:DR here. If you're thinking about getting a next gen console. WAIT until you see everything about it for launch. From the exclusives and launch titles and even getting to see the machine. Make an informed descion please!

If you don't want to because of the used game shit, Stay on PC and install Steam, I cannot recommend this service more.

Personally I'm leaning twoards the XboxOne atm (if it wasn't obvious) because in our home the PS3 is used as a media machine more than to play games (because of work and wow) So all of the O/S and Kinect stuff apeals to me. But I'm waiting to make a call on it until this fall once I see more from each.

So let's see how this new blog works, I'm feeling better just typing out my rage (arguing with Lore on twitter didn't help this much)

I'm not certain of that

I'm not certain of that Saedo, was my first thought as well but many of the pundints have refueded the ability. We simply dont have the answers but FFS the console is no bigger than a laptop at this point so whats the BFD with taking it with you?

Why should I have to take it

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:13

Why should I have to take it with me, when I already paid for the game?

When you take a movie to a friend's house, do you need to take your own DVD player?

Elapsed's picture

firstly (as saedo posted now)

Elapsed — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 20:48

firstly (as saedo posted now) this assumption I read was false, and you can just login to your account over at the friend's. Good news!

secondly however, I'm not saying it's ideal at all. and no taken to that argument you shouldn't have to bring over your DVD player to watch a movie. BUT I am saying it's not that big of a deal given the size of the Xbox being about that of a laptop... it's a shitty argument but it's correct.. The thing is super small (by comparison to last gen)

I already bought the game and

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 21:24

I already bought the game and the console.  Why do I need to be told when  and how I can and can't use my purchases?

Elapsed's picture

you're joking right? That's

Elapsed — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 22:44

you're joking right? That's how the system has been for almost a decade (if not longer now) on the PC games market. You don't "purchase" the game, you "License" the game. The Dev only needs be honest with you about the game up front to meet their end of the bargain.

I'm reminded of my Diablo 2 days. Playing since 3am the night it came out until patch 1.10. Why do I know the exact patch I quit? Because that's when Blizz flexed their muscles and said "You all are not playing the game right, we are making sweeping changes to make sure you play our game the way we want you to" Re: the secret cow level being played over and over. Almost made me boycott Blizz forever, thankfully I came back around to give them a chance with WoW and eventually end up meeting you people.

You don't own the cell phone in your hand or on your desk, you don't own the game you bought and you don't own the console in your house. It's all at the discretion of the manufacturer now, you agree to a EULA that says they can do whatever the hell they want now that they have your money.

YES they will try to do everything possible to make you happy to buy another one... but they will try and do their DAMNEDEST to make sure that you, your family, and your friends pay them money to do things.

Another example is your copy of Windows or Mac O/S that you use. You don't own that either, and THEY FORCE YOU to only use it on one (or 3 if you got that lisence) computer. You buy the 1 PC version and you cannot use it on your mom's, dad's or friend's PC. Did people complain when this practice was started almost 2 decades ago (if not longer)? Yes! yes they did! My Dad was one of them! But the practice is done still today and my dad owns 2 coppies of Windows 7 Pro.

This is the electronic property era, we can either use the stuff, or not. But we're not going to get fair use of any of this. FUCK we can't even make backups of our Xbox or PS3 games without the fear of possible lawsuit!

BTW full disclosure, I agree with you that this is SHIT practice. However I really want to make clear that this shit goes on ALL the time around us and we capitulate daily and freely.

Shihli's picture

A few points.1)  On the PC

Shihli — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 04:50

A few points.

1)  On the PC games market - you don't own a physical copy of the game.  You purchased a virtual copy - a download.  Yeah, the fact you don't own it is shit, but that is mildly offset by the excellent sales and deals you tend to find on Steam/Origin/uPlay/etc.  When I buy an XB1 game, I'm buying a physical disc.  I OWN the disc.  It is MINE.  Now they're telling me/you/us that we no longer own the physical copy of the game we're buying.  That's horse shit.

2)  I do own the cell phone that I purchase - after the contract is up.  Until the contract is over, the phone is being rented-to-own.  Read your contract!

3)  You do own the console that you purchase, but you don't own the software on that console.  That is to say, if Microsoft/Sony detects modification of their software, your ass is banned.  Pretty sure there's been lots of legal proceedings involving this as well, which have unfortunately gone in Microsoft/Sony's direction.

4)  I only own one copy of Windows 7, but I have it installed on two machines (mine and Allikat's).

5)  If you don't agree with this shit practice, why defend it?

As an aside, I really do enjoy having this/these sort of discussion(s), and if I come off as overly antagonistic it's only because gaming has been a long-time passion of mine.  I started on an Atari for pity's sake ... to see where it's going makes me really sad :(

Elapsed's picture

firstly, I was going to say.

Elapsed — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 10:39

firstly, I was going to say. This is why I miss having you in game, these discusions. I miss this shit so much.

I will go in order

1) thats the case when I own a DISC of a game as well on PC. Software are licenses it happened ages ago, it's the world we live in. We either get to take advantage of the amazing stuff that comes out, or we live in some Open Source world (which some crazy fucking people do) and only use Open Sourced shit.

EDIT- Hardware reply

In this country at least, it is illegal for you to jailbreak a phone (chargable by $500,000 fine and up to 5 years in jail for 1st offense) and also the same for Modding your console... That alone tells you that you don't really own shit sadly. They do! This applies under the DMCA (oh how we love the DMCA)

-_-

Wait wait wait, turn that -_- face into a smiley for fuck sake

""The Unlocking Technology Act of 2013 would also make it permanently legal to jailbreak cell phones and tablets, which allows unauthorized apps to run on devices, and to mod game consoles – all of which are currently forbidden under Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.""

So you may indeed soon have some more rights with that console you "own" or that cell phone you "own" but there always seems to be a loophole for the companies to try and get you.

4) That's actually cool, but I dare you to try and install it on another PC... I think they must have added some "give" to the servers to allow that use. But previously (when Windows 7 came out and for at least a year) you could not even try to install it on another machine without calling them and telling them you "upgraded" your computer and it's the same lisence

5) as I mentioned in 1) we get two real choices anymore. Live in this world and get to play with the astounding toys we get everyday from these devs of various types (not just gaming) or we go to Open Sourced shit and never deal with the crazy BS rules that these companies employ. Also, I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal if I would've had to pick up the console and take it to a friends house.... ESPECIALLY if the friend had one too! That would be sweeter because then I would only take the console (and perhaps the power cord) and just unplug his.

Shihli's picture

Shihli — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 11:11

I don't disagree with the software licenses, in fact I agreed with you.  We don't own them, we own a license to play them.

But when you own a DISC (which has been the crux of this whole argument), what right does Microsoft/Sony have to tell you how and where and when you can play it?

Re: Windows 7 - no need to dare anyone anything.  It is installed on my PC and on Allikat's PC simultaneously.  It hasn't been a problem.

We still have a choice - stop paying Microsoft and Sony to rip us off.  Stop buying their hardware.  Stop buying their games.

which was the whole point of

Elapsed — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 11:19

which was the whole point of my argument originally in the OP. Either get off your lazy ass and move the console (which as stated is not nessisary) or quit the consoles all together. You always have choices, it's just some of them prove to not let you have cool new toys lol

Elapsed — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 11:47

AH I see to problem with the arguments I've been making in our discussion. You have seen me as "defending" the acts of MS or Sony in how they opporate their console businesses. Or even in the very nature of their practices.

My problem and post isn't directed at the consoles flaws, it's at people who CONTINUE to say they will support them and get one but have problems with one console or another and jump ship for the "grass is always greener" ideals. When the other may have the same flaws, or they dont know jack fucking shit about one or the other fully.

While I don't like what I'm seeing in the new gen, I'm not going to complain. I will get my console, continue to use it as a media device with the occasional game (assassin's creed, Halo, FFXV etc etc etc) and go on with my life. The people who complain and still buy the fucking things knowing what they're buying or supporting... those are the people who piss me off

And if your friend wants

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:03

And if your friend wants credit of playing the game (achievements, et al) on their account?

saedo's picture

That falls under borrowing

saedo — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:14

That falls under borrowing it.

Rather than simply playing for the fun of it with friends.

Don't let lack of getting achievements be the one thing that prevents you from playing a game.

Shihli's picture

Additional argument - Let's

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:24

Additional argument -

Let's say you lend your copy of Final Fantasy 47 to your friend.  They intend to play it off your account and you give them your credentials.  When they're playing off your account, you (almost certainly) can't play your own games off your own account, at home - because they're already logged in elsewhere.  So now the act of lending a game to a friend would lock out your ability to play your games so long as they are logged in.

Additional, additional argument -

Same premise as above.  You lend Call of Duty 1027994 to your friend.  Now let's say they decide to try and cheat online while using your account - hacks, trainers, etc, whatever.  You get your XBL account banned and you can no longer play any games you've direct-downloaded to your account.  Now you try and restore your account, but you can't - because now Microsoft knows you've been sharing your account to play games.

Second argument above is "weaker" but still a concern nontheless.

saedo's picture

Yea like I said.   Borrowing

saedo — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:30

Yea like I said.   Borrowing is the bitch.  Can't do it easily.   Only was pointing out the "take your console to your friend's place cause you can't just pop the disc in" sounded silly.

So, depending on things I can say..

Borrowing would have to be even trade.  You play one of their games, they play one of yours.

Maybe you can log on mulitple times.   Cause they claim always online is not true.  Only required for the activation.  So if you can log in an account on your friend's machine.  Your friend's machine has the record of your account.   They start the game.  They can play it while logged on.  But need not stay logged on while playing it.   So then you can log on yourself whenever as long as they are not currently activating the game.

If maybe that's how it all works....

As for last scenario.  Um.  Don't cheat with someone else's account?  Or... ever?

Shihli's picture

This strikes me as a lot of

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:36

This strikes me as a lot of damn effort to simply play a game.

Last scenario is pretty much horseshit, I know - but you are the one that pays for your friend's stupidity in thise case.

saedo's picture

I typed a lot of words but if

saedo — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:44

I typed a lot of words but if you think about it, not too much effort.  Log into friends account.  Start game.  Ignore.

Assumedly when you log in, kicking friend off, they can continue playing with no achievement credits.   If not, replace step of "Ignore" with "Log off".

We've seen before with WoW accounts getting banned through friend's stupidity.  People get angry but the business still continues.   So, I don't see this as a game breaker.

Elapsed's picture

This is all presuming that

Elapsed — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 20:36

This is all presuming that they don't setup an "always online" scenario like EA did with Sim City in which it checked for you to be online often and if you couldn't "authenticate" you would be locked or kicked off until you could

saedo's picture

This seems to imply that you

saedo — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 20:49

This seems to imply that you would only need to check in online once per 24 hours to continue playing a game.

Thats cool, but when we hit

Elapsed — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 21:02

Thats cool, but when we hit the time that a game requires the Xbox Live Stream computing to run you will clearly have to be always on or near always online to make the game work and let the servers do the heavy lifting for the world generation. This may only end up applying to a small sub-set of genres though like MMOs

Shihli's picture

Just like how Sim City and

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 21:25

Just like how Sim City and Diablo 3 "require" always on internet?  Don't think fora second this won't be abused.

Elapsed's picture

no, they mentioned something

Elapsed — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 22:21

no, they mentioned something that was a service done by OnLive Where it's not the power of your PC that matters but your internet connection. They have the beefy computers that do all the fun hardware shit, and then just stream the game to you. This is similar to what the MS guy spoke about during the reveal. Where yeah the Xbox could do a ton on the system, but the server could do more on top of it and stream it to the system. Essentially making it a dual computer setup to play one game

Shihli's picture

I love you man but you're

Shihli — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 04:45

I love you man but you're being incredibly naive about how OnLive could be used.  You appreciate how it should be used, but don't think for a second that inscrupulous game developers (*cough* EA *cough*) won't immediately pretend that their games are just TOO BIG for the XB1 to handle and start using OnLive as a form of DRM.

I'm making a huge assumption, but I don't think I'm making an unfounded one.  Again, look at Sim City.

Elapsed's picture

I'm trying to keep a positive

Elapsed — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 10:29

I'm trying to keep a positive outlook on perhaps the quality of titles we will get to see. I'm sure you're right and the EA's will do the ol' SimCity, "oh your computer just can't handle running the achievements", bull shit. But you have to be a little hopeful in there for a title that uses the "OnLive style" feature properly right?

Shihli's picture

Of course.  There will be

Shihli — Fri, 05/24/2013 - 11:12

Of course.  There will be some developers (e.g. Notch) that would use it correctly.  There would be several others (e.g. EA, Ubisoft, Activision) that wouldn't.

Shihli's picture

Of course business

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:47

Of course business continues.  It just continues without your access to your account.  People will still bust a nut over the latest consoles, even if it means continuing reduction in their rights as consumers.

Shihli's picture

It isn't.  I'm arguing

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:16

It isn't.  I'm arguing devil's advocate there.

How 'bout this argument, which may cut a little closer to reality -

You want to play your game at a friends' house.  You intend to log in to your account over there.  Turns out, their internet's out.  Now you can't play the game you already paid for with your friend.

saedo's picture

Well that would be a bad

saedo — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:25

Well that would be a bad scenario.  It's not likely to happen often.   And with today's technology, a lot of people can turn a smartphone into a wifi hotspot for a quick account log on and run game.  Then I assume you can log off since they claim not always online.   Unless of course cell service is down as well or if they don't have one of those things.

Shihli's picture

It may not happen often ...

Shihli — Thu, 05/23/2013 - 19:35

It may not happen often ... but when it does, only legitimate customers are affected.  Those that will have pirated the game (or rigged their box to bypass Microsoft's checks and balances) will be free to play ad nauseum.

So again, it's a scheme that only serves to prevent legitimate customers from using their legitimately-purchased product.  If you ask me, anyway.
