Pedran told and showed you
Alprazalam — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 08:29Pedran told and showed you what quartz is, and it really is amazing. RAWR is a program that works outside of World of Warcraft. It is seriously all over www.elitistjerks.com The mage forum even has a dedicated post to setting it up correctly. Just keep one thing in mind, RAWR is not an addon and should not be put in the Addon folder of your WOW file. Just to clarify.
First thing to do, READ ELITIST JERKS!!! just go to www.elitistjerks.com Find the mage forums and read EVERYTHING in the frostfire thread. OK, maybe not everything, but I'd try to read the first 3 pages and then the last 5 to 6 pages.
Secondly, Get RAWR. The Elitist Jerks mage forums even have a post directly on how to set the program up.
Thirdly. As a FFB or TTW/FB spec, this is usually the stats in order to most DPS to least DPS. Spell hit (until capped), Spell Power, Crit, then Haste. I'm not sure where Intellect and spirit comes into effect (Intellect being that TTW/FB spec is mana extensive, spirit that molten armor now works with a % of your spirit). Once you've downloaded RAWR and play with it some, You'll find out what gear you can go for thats easy to get.
Some Addon Infoz......
Fjork — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 07:51Quartz:
I don't know of a class that has more use for Quartz than a
Quartz Addon
mage / warlock / hunter because of the massive arsenal of
cooldown each of you have to keep track of.
Quartz simply makes it easier.
http://wowinterface.com/downloads/info7158-Quartz-ModularCastingBar.html can give you all the information you need on what it does and how, then go download it from Curse.
Bartender4 / Dominos:
Bartender4 with buttons all over the page
Not much difference between the two to be frank. Garreth
and alot of our guildies SWEAR by Bartender4, so I recently
switched from Dominos to see what it was like. Not really
all that different. Everything I was doing in Dominos is
available in Bartender4 with one exception. Bartender4 gives you the option of some "built-in" macro's for any button you place on a tab. Have to give credit for that idea. If you look over the "UI Gallery" on our guild-page, you'll see a great deal of pages with a group of buttons at the bottom, a group of buttons in the middle, buttons randomly all over the place (like mine), and others. This is the option Bartender / Dominos gives you. I have found it extremely useful as someone that used cleanse/taunts (or in your
case Decurse) with max mouse sensitivity and a 2000 dps mouse.
Random Guild UI
I can't DO that anymore because of wowbuntu.... (see Garreth's
comment on what you/I SHOULD do....), but you get the idea. A row
of buttons in the middle of the screen with potions, a row of buttons
on the left of the screen that highlights on mouse-over for casting the table, mana biscuits, etc. Both Dominos and Bartender4 have ALOT to offer, and unlike QuestHelper they are very lightweight addons.
Quartz.
Stryyfe — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 08:13Wow, it looks very sleek and sexy. I'll give it a try. (quartz that is.) as far as my skill bars, I'm very comfortable with where I have things right now, I know where every thing is and emergency things are bound to my mouse, while regular uses are on keys F1-F5
definately will look into quartz though. I'm currently playing with the download pack as I may have mentioned somewhere else on this page just a little earlier. seems pretty nice so far. also, thanks for going into all the detail. it makes me feel like you're taking my application more seriously and it shows how much you care to improve your guild and raiding experience. good little bit of info. haha. thanks. ^,=,^
I could never play with a UI
Prime8 — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 08:09I could never play with a UI that small. It should be .... at least 3 times that size.
I don't ginvite mages who
garreth — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 18:53I don't ginvite mages who can't decurse as fast as me. How did Adoron get in, you ask? I think he snuck in before we made these rules. Regardless: Grid + Mouseover Decurse macro. Google that shit. Get it on lock down and get ready to do something besides just pewpew. I don't care about bar addons or shit to make your UI look pretty. What I DO care about are the raid addons that allow us to work as a team easily and efficiently. Be prepared to speak Grid, to understand Omen and to work with Ora2, BigWigs (or DeadlyBossMods). Everything else is just candy.
Done and done.
Stryyfe — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 06:36I just got home from work, downloaded the Downfall raid addon pack and will proceed to test them out. :D
I'm not exactly sure how Ora or Grid works, I know Omen is basically a DPS meter but it keeps threat in real time both global and single target. I'll try them out when I pug one of the easies later today. probably OS.
What are you saying Garreth?
Adoron (not verified) — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 22:22What are you saying Garreth?
He may not have grid
Aurleas — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 19:01Dragon doesnt currently have grid but i will say he is one of the few mages ive ran with that is smart enough during the saph fight to decurse himself rather than just keep pew pewing while not realizing saph is healing himself for as much damage as a "retarded mage"would be doing.
Hrm
Adoron (not verified) — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 15:30I must say, I do not see any problem with a mage using the stock UI. I have never needed anything flashy and organized (to my liking) to mash 2-5 buttons. Dominoes/etc can help if your screen is a bit small, and you have to organize your panels around so that your screen isn't completely filled with raid add-ons, but that's it. What you need to do now is, firstly, install the main components of the DF Raid Add-on pack (not pallypower or some other mod that's moreover associated with a healing job) - you know, Omen, Ora2, Grid, BanzaiAlert, and Bigwigs. The ones that prove to be essential to a mage. As mentioned below, you simply can't get into a DF raid without them. Next, get yourself known. Talk to us, see what you can do to get involved, sign up for 10-man raids, prove to us that you CAN put effort into this guild. When you start getting into our thoughts will we be able to propose options for you. I've had two friends apply to this guild now and not get in, both who weren't very interested in 'coming to the people' about what to do to get in. It's the direct opposite for this guild. Note: Frostfire is becoming a bit obsolete, now that 3.1 has rolled around. It might be in your favor to do some research on the current top-dps mage specs (ever since 3.1 was released, arcane/fire (20/51/00) has been proving to be the next top-dps mage spec, but it's in dispute with the previous spec, arcane (57/3/11)).
(insert your subject here)
Stryyfe — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 06:46Where exactly can I check the stats between those two specs? also, shouldn't the spec I choose match my play style and the availability of my gear? I know I can change gems and weapon enchant of course... anyways, keep up with the feedback and I'll keep talking to you guys and asking questions. ^_^
please learn your class
moriella — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 16:51I'm gonna get off on a tangent here, but this has been bothering me for a while.
Please, learn to play your spec. I'm a priest for gods sake, and I've always been a priest. But in 3.0+ I had heard arcane wasnt 'optimal' and in 3.1 it's even less so.
FFB is back.
In the span of 2 minutes between google and a ElitistJerks I have all the evidence that I need to refute your statements.
http://www.stratfu.com/blog/2009/04/mages-and-31/
note: this is written by a mage from one of the top guilds in the world
EJ says
FFB+Focus* >= FB/TTW >= Arcane > FFB >> Frost/TTW
when a new patch comes out - do some research. when a patch has been out a few weeks, look at parses from the top guilds. then armory their characters. check how they gear, how they spec. I guarantee you will see a DPS increase.
/endrant
That's surely not what I
Adoron (not verified) — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 23:21That's surely not what I found when I ran around EJ for a couple hours earlier today. According to what I came across, FFB+Focus, Fb/TTW, and Arcane are all par with each other currently. As mages progress further into Ulduar will their DPS slowly shift towards a preference in FFB/TTW because spirit, for one, will come in more of an abundance.
I have to agree with you Mori
Alprazalam — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 22:39I have to agree with you Mori on some things. The 4 piece T8 bonus is going to shoot TTW/FB and FFB specced mages' DPS through the roof. Also, to go TTW/FB spec, I'd atleast get the correct hit rating. A mage switching from FFB to TTW/FB spec has to pick up another 3% to hit from gear and gems, since they're lacking the 3% from the frost tree. Ulduar is filled with hit rating items, and the hit cap will be a lot easier to gain once you've gotten a few pieces from there. Either way, if you wanna play with some kind of fire build, go TTW/FB, I honestly don't think mana is going to be THAT big of a deal. I'm still Arcane and I have only had to ask for an Innervate once inside Ulduar. I'll let you know if I've had to ask for anymore when we get to some of the longer fights. I just think that Fire mages are still scared to use Innervate because that's roughly 7.5 to 8 seconds they aren't doing damage, which has a huge impact on DPS. IDK, fire mages tend to just tick me off the more I talk to them, so as far as if I'll be speccing into TTW/FB spec, all I can say is that Fire just doesn't fit my play style anymore. =P
Quick Point
Fjork — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 14:38I'd like to point out this part of his post for our addon super-mod guildies:
fresh on the raiding scene as of Burning Crusade. ( I was still in school) since then, I have gone from casual to what I hope will become hardcore raider
I think advice and recommendations are in order, instead of burning the poor-guy about his absolutely dreadful, disgusting, pathetic, sad, horrendous, pitiful, generic, useless, frustrating, nasty, and generally all around boring UI.
hehe.
But ja, I'm not a mage, so I can offer the best addons to look for, but here's the ones I HIGHLY recommend you start with:
Beyond that, good luck.
quick point reply.
Stryyfe — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 18:42first my raid UI isn't boring, it's clean, and it lets me see everything that's going on on the screen. :P
second, that's recount down in the bottom right corner.
as for the other addons, I'll look into them. I'll download the Downfall Raid Addon Pack and test drive it.
My screen isn't exactly small so I don't think I'll be using Bar/Dominos unless it REALLY impresses me, I've got my keybindings set up the way I like them and I don't want to start from scratch.. that being said, I don't know how it will affect things, but I'll at least try them.
You forgot nauseating
Foresight — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 14:49You forgot nauseating
I know, I know.Gimme a break
Fjork — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 14:53I know, I know.
Gimme a break though. It's the end of the work day and my creativity is shot to sh*&.
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW STOCK!?!?
Foresight — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 14:29EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW STOCK!?!? Your UI makes my eye's rain.
And a side note....lol @ frostfire spec. Get that busted ass spec outta here. Why are you running a scorch Glyph with a 11/0/60 build?
For a raiding spec why not try http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=8&tal=230005031100030000000...
Fireball, Molten Armor and Living Bomb Glyph. I bet you would like it.
L2read?
Stryyfe — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 18:46I posted that I raid with the cookie-cutter frostfire spec (as of pre-patch anyways) the other morning when they gave all my talent points back I went frost, which is my favorite non-raid spec. cut me a break for not glyphing for it when I knew I'd be back to frostfire by raid day. -_-
glyphs are a waste of money if you can do what you need to do without them. this would not be acceptable to run with in a raiding scene, I know, but it's world PvE and daylies so...
as for your link to the Deep fire build of 3.1, I already mentioned that I'd be trying some new stuff, but thanks, I'll give that one specifically a try. :D
availibility
moriella — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 13:48Can only raid on thurs and fri nights. This is a serious issue. Garreth has said that he's not considering raiders who cannot commit to scheduled nights.
available availabilities.
Stryyfe — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 06:51I suppose I may have left it mildly confusing, but you don't seem to have read my full application past that point. I have checked your raid calender and it seems that most of the raiding takes place between 6:00PM and 9:00PM server time. (please correct me if I'm wrong) so I made a minor edit with the availability tab on my app. I can EASILY make those times and I already made that clear further down on the application.
If I was wrong on the raid times I apologize but if not and you just didn't read it, GTFO. :P
in relation to my "available
Fjork — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 14:44in relation to my "available days" those are the day's I'm available 24 hours a day. every other day I can easily do anything within the 7-9 AM or the 6-9PM schedule, provided I know about it a short time in advance. I'd be willing to join with whichever character would benefit the current raid chemestry more, with a slight preference towards my Druid or my
Pedran
He actually readsthe applications..... hehe
Your DPS was strong...
Darthon — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 13:04Dragon, You topped the meters in every raid. I would really be interested in seeing what it will be after you get some Mods and customize it, I woul dnot have thought you were rollin with stock. Dragon is a cool dude and always good for a few laughs.
about freaking time you apped
lleme — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 12:27about freaking time you apped here dragon!!..lol..i miss raidin with you buddy with your retarded high DPS..good ol BoB days with me lettin aurleas die for fun :P..but hey i think im outta that rut now..cause hes staying alive now..the only way he can die is running into a mob himself :P
Dragon!!
Aurleas — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 08:57OMG dragon i miss raiding with you had tons of fun in bob even though we had some wipefests....I know im just an app myself but when it comes to dps its kinda dragon's deal he knows each of toons very well and heals pretty good on his pally. Good luck on your app man and you should look into hooking your UI up i took some advice and ive never looked back i cant live without bartender, pitbull, titan panel, grid etc. Plus it may keep Garreth from killing cute innocent kittens at night :P
Use FuBar instead of Titan
garreth — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 18:45Use FuBar instead of Titan panel, Aur :)
Fubar or Titan
Aurleas — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 18:51I am going to take your advice and try out Fubar. Im just wondering why you recomend it over titan panel?
ut oh, we'll have to see what
Lorb — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 12:34ut oh, we'll have to see what the "real" dragon has to say about this dragon. In the meantime take aurleas advice on the mods and update your UI
Dragon, repeat after
Prime8 — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 15:32Dragon, repeat after me:
Grid is not just for healers. Grid is not just for healers. Grid is not just for healers.
grid is for healers grid is for healers
Stryyfe — Thu, 04/23/2009 - 11:58lol. okay I now have Quartz as well. it's very pretty to say the least. It's straightforward in it's application. showing me my timers on the debuffs and such. I might just keep it because of it's style factor. :P
if somebody wanted to help me figure out how to customize it though, that'd be awesome!
