You don't come across
Gealm — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 09:42You don't come across challenging at all. You obviously know your stuff cold I really enjoy the dialogue and learning some things I might not have known.
My information on the spec comes mostly from the Complete Mage Compendium on the Elitist Jerks mage class mechanics forum. The link to the entire article is http://elitistjerks.com/f75/t30655-wotlk_complete_mage_compendium_3_2_pt...
It's a long article but here is a cut and paste of the part that I was referring to :
Mage and Caster DPS at Level 80
The latest Simcraft results can be found here SampleOutput - simulationcraft - Google Code
Specs with at least 18 points in Arcane assume Torment the Weak.
The top setups currently are Arcane (57/3/11) and Fire (20/51/0), depending on fight length, mechanics and the overall mana sitution.
Frostfire (0/53/18) is slightly behind Fire but vastly more mana efficient with better AoE and burst, Frost (18/0/53) is not competitive DPS.
Thats is what made me decide to go arcane in part. All that being said I am more than happy to switch if you prefer. I could even do a week as one spec and a week as the other as kind of a ginea pig trial.
When I use rawr and plug in the gear i currently have access to my score as arcane is 5431.74 and with fire is 5461.83. Much less than a 1% difference between the specs at least with the gear I currently have available.
On another note I already tweaked my spec and am working on jewelcrafting as we speak. I am also working on collecting the mats for the sash of ancient power first since it's the bigger upgrade. The slippers are less of an upgrade and are actually not BIS the boots from HM FL are a 40 DPS improvement over the slippers. But i will work on the slippers after the belt.
Also, here is a WOL parse of Vezax (some attempts and a successful kill) and Yogg (unsuccessful).
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/8QsCU1fNwF5W0HDs/sum/damageDone/
I really appreciate all the comments and advice. I'lll level up jewelcrafting today which should provide yet another boost.
that parse on Vezax is pretty
Kwondre — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 11:31that parse on Vezax is pretty impressive and I think you get the benefit of the doubt.
I'm satisfied...If you come on board i say just keep doing what you've been doing and worry about changing if you fall behind.
Good stuff dude
there are some changes i mentioned left unanswered...but I think they're were of the minor variety so look over at your leisure...Spellslinger's is BIS until FM Hard mode...but I think the waiting list for that (at least in our 25 man raids.) has got to be quiiiiite long. I'd argue spellslingers should be good enough (and worth making) through 3.2
I will definately get the
Gealm — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 11:43I will definately get the slippers I was just prioritizing with getting the sash first since its a bigger upgrade of the 2. I will probably be able to get both in pretty short order. I'll make an alt on your server and check the AH prices so I can decide if I should buy mats before or after xfer provided I'm approved by you guys for xfer.
I didn't mean to leave any questions unanswered. Looks like i missed the glyphs but i will change those as you suggested. I will change the stam/sp to spirit/sp and switch my legs from stam/sp to spirit/sp.
Let me know if you have any other comments/suggestions or changes. J/c to 150 already this morning. Should have that maxed fairly quickly and the mats are easy to obtain for the feet/belt though with a sizeable wallet dent but worth it. :D
Your rawr should display fire
Kwondre — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 12:51Your rawr should display fire as slightly better than arcane with your gear...but if you look at the EJ post on BIS gear in 3.1 (too lazy to link), the reason they only have Fire and Frostfire options is because those two scale the best on the road between Naxx 25 gear and ULD 25 BIS gear. The example i pointed out earlier...4 PC T8.5 is godly for Fire, but is not desirable for Arcane (yet the T8.5 has much better native stats to begin with that its hard to justify keeping 4PC T7 over it).
T8.5 is pretty hit focused and you're already bathed in it as arcane. So, as you get better gear, I'm fairly confident that the gap between your arcane DPS potential and your fire DPS potential will widen.
Finally, I've leveled JC from scratch on two toons without a miner...my advice would be as follows:
1) WoWhead all the recipes available from the vendor, and plan around it with the cheapest mats available. When you're at 150, it should not be a surprise to you what mats you're gonna use at 300. Make a plan, it will lead to fewer wasted goods.
2) Find a disenchanter buddy, send him everything you make, DE it, and AH it...that should help mitigate the cost.
3) There are a bunch of things you can make like "Delicate Copper Wire" or "Thorium Setting" that will initially skill you up, but also are necessary for higher level skill ups...don't lose the opportunity to make those first - that's elementary craft skilling technique...but just in case =)

My two cents: i'm going to
Karli — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 21:34My two cents: i'm going to look in to the last section pretty heavily, because honestly, any jerk can google "best mage raiding spec", but not every person will actually be a fun and competent addition to guild.
I like that this app is older, has a classical music background (which promotes many skill sets that help raiding), and lives in the coolest city in the US (no bias here, of course).
Why do you like playing a mage, and what is it about raiding that appeals to you? What are you looking for in a guild community?
On to your gear...it's decent, but could definitely use some improvement. I do agree that your 2nd trinket (the hit one) is a bad choice. There are a lot of items you could obtain on your own that have hit on them, but replacing your trinket should be your first priority. You can obtain a 111 spell power trinket from running WG and/or BGs; once you get that you'll have 44 hit you need to obtain elsewhere, which shouldn't be too hard. I would recommend putting a [Rigid Autumn's Glow] in your belt, but you might want to check with Rawr first. Also thinking an orange spell dmg/hit gem would be a smarter choice for your yellow socket in your chest to get more hit.
Also, using the [Glowing Twilight Opal] instead of [Purified Twilight Opal] is bad from a pure dps standpoint, as well as having the [Master's Spellthread] instead of the [Sanctified Spellthread]. Spirit contributes to dps in multiple ways, but stam, well...what the heck to mages need stam for? =P
I'm wondering why your Stormjewel is in your Tier 7.5 leggings instead of your Tier 8.5 gloves; mostly because you'll be more likely to upgrade the legs vs. the gloves (best in slot). Speaking of your gloves, if you're going to break your gem bonus you might as well do it with a pure spell power gem. I know you have to have a few blue (purple) gems in to keep your meta gem bonus, but your current gemming choice is not ideal.
Anyways, other than doing some minor gem and other item tweaks, I think your gear is pretty decent and it would be interesting to see how you play in a raid setting.
You make some very good
Gealm — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 22:07You make some very good points. The trinket is definately the worst offender gear wise. There are plenty of other options I just have been a bit unlucky on a few drops in that regard. Easily fixable though. Once I change that out its a pretty simple fix to rearrange some gems.
Technically speaking your right about both the [Glowing Twilight Opal] and [Master's Spellthread] however the difference in terms of DPS is 5DPS on the spellthread and 2DPS on the gem choice. It just seemed to be a minor DPS difference for some extra HP. However, I can change that easily if you think 7DPS > 402hp.
As far as the Stormjewel I socketed that before I got the gloves. Otherwise I would have socketed the stormjewel in the gloves. So the next time I get a stormjewel I will put it in the item most likely to be replaced last and then regem the legs.
Any of the item, gem etc... tweaks that are suggested are easy to change and I'm always open to suggestions. Thanks alot for the input.
You appear to be 2.5% above
saedo — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 18:43You appear to be 2.5% above the hit cap. I'm going to assume you've geared assuming no outside buffs, though, you'd actually be 1.5% below cap doing that. Do you have a combo of gear that doesn't overcap you?
You picked herbalism as a profession, was that merely to make gold?
Otherwise armory checks fine.
I actually geared assuming
Gealm — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 18:52I actually geared assuming appropriate raid buffs. As you know its difficult to end up exactly at the hit cap without being slightly over...which is better than being slightly under, of course. I don't have an exact gear combo that puts me right at the cap. I use Rawr to determine the gear combination that would give me the best DPS considering available gear. It just so happens that my best combination puts me slightly over. The more time that goes by and the more gear i accumulate the more ill be able to reduce wasted points on being over capped.
As far as herbalism, I choose that long ago when you used to need many pots and elixirs. I hated spending so much gold having to buy it all so I choose herbalism to alleviate that. Probably enchant/tailoring is a better combo but I didn't want to redo an entire profession. Although I guess I could do that and then switch one of my alts from enchanting to herbalism.
Let me know if there are any other questions/concerns I could answer.
I would actually argue with
Karli — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 21:41I would actually argue with you from a theory craft standpoint that it is NOT better to be over hit cap than slightly under....but I'm probably splitting hairs =)
Your absolutely right it's
Gealm — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 22:10Your absolutely right it's not always better. I should have worded that different. What I meant was it was better in my case DPS wise based on my currently available gear.
65 wasted rating points is an
saedo — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 18:5965 wasted rating points is an awful lot. Then I take, it's probably the T8 gloves you got new (60 hit rating there) which gave you 2pc that made Rawr say it's best for you? Either that or the trinket.
Your Off Hand and Belt seems to be among the lowest ilvl gear with loads of hit on too, got any viable alternatives to look into?
Actually
Kwondre — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 07:34He's 65 points over if you assume that he's frostfire spec...but he's arcane. So in a raid environment, he only needs 183.61 or 7% hit rating and he's got 328 or 12.5%...just a bit under 145 hit rating over cap =).
That just means there's a TON of upside for your dps by swapping out hit gear for SP/Haste/Crit gear OR (what i suggested in my above thread), respeccing the frost fire or fire.
Oh I missed Precision does 3%
saedo — Mon, 07/27/2009 - 09:37Oh I missed Precision does 3% to all spells. lol I'm so behind on mages (old alt), so instantly thought back in the days it was fire/frost spells only.
The biggest problem with the
Gealm — Sun, 07/26/2009 - 19:19The biggest problem with the overcap is the trinket. I just don't have a better alternative. The 2pc is a must have no brainer regardless of any over hit it created. I currently have no viable alternative. I could lower the hit closer to cap but at the expense of other stats where my overall DPS would be lower so that wouldn't make sense. The long and short of it is what you see in the armory produces the maximum DPS I can produce given the gear I have and that includes having to have wasted points in hit.
That being said as I amass gear I will continue to find the absolute best gear combination to maximize gear and stats and limit wasted gear points.
