Site Features
garreth — Wed, 09/16/2009 - 15:04
As some of you know, I'm a Drupal developer/themer/consultant. Drupal is the content management framework that runs this website. It's incredibly powerful with features limited only to our imaginations.
Now, like the car mechanic whose own car is crap, Downfallguild.org has been pretty neglected. I'm reaching out to you guys for some ideas.
First, something we have in the works: Downfall is about to get a "Raids" section of the site that not only gives us a heads up display about every raid we have, but shows members of that raid, upcoming scheduled raids, raid leaders, latest boss kills and mascot images. People starting up 10-man raids will be able to start up their own groups, with their own areas to discuss their raid issues. This ties into the our upcoming "character" system that allows us to associate our toons with our site accounts. A little bit of this can be seen here: /wowarmory
Now, what I'd like to see from you guys: Ideas. Heavy site users like Saedo, Kwondre, Knoppix and others, I'd like some input about what you guys would LIKE to do on the site. Blogs and forums are fine, but could we do more? A better tracker by chance?Have you guys seen featuers on another site that you'd like to see emulated here?
I'd like you all start here: http://drupal.org/project/modules?filters=drupal_core:87&solrsort=sort_title%20asc. That's a list of all the modules available to Drupal that are compatible with our version. Do you see any modules that stand out as being badass and something that would benefit our guild/raids/new-site-users?
Please no "I want ice cream sprinkled with diamonds and a pony" posts, only legitimate input. Thanks for your help. Let me know if you have any questions about Drupal!

A blockquote and or code button too maybe?

Kwondre — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 10:28have only skimmed the comments below, but in my short time on this site, a couple of things:
1) Sidebars are really helpful such as "Popular content" and "Who's Online", but when you're composing a post it can take up some valuable real estate.
2) The addition of /wowarmory is nice, but a more in depth profile page that includes specs, gear, professions (w/ rare recipes), raw materials open for trade could be helpful for members to link up with other members for stuff. Now this would be dependent on people updating their own profiles, but it would be interesting to see such a module in action
3) mmo-champ has a blue tracker RSS feed that I'm wondering whether it would be hard to integrate onto the site.
I'm sure I'll think of others, but honestly I've never seen a better guild website than this...most are just a forum with a stupid image on the top of it...And most of my comments are small things like being able to delete your own post, etc.

Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 10:40Most of or all data about a charater can be pulled directly from wow armory and I would be willing to help out on this, this is the kind of shit I love doing. Some of it will have to be manually added.
I think we should also be able to link our alts in with all this.
I would love to help develop this profile page Garreth just FYI.

Scaron — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 09:31I apologize if this is already on the site and I've just missed it, but I think a search box on the main page that allowed me to put in a snippet of text and be able to find it regardless of whether that snippet of text was a blog, story, event, forum post, etc.
This is, in a way, a solution to an overarching suggestion that stuff gets buried quickly on the site.

Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 00:24First thing that I have noticed not major but would be great to have, I would love to be able to delete a post I make and be able to edit one of my posts that some else replies to. Right now we cant delete a post at all and if someone replies to a post you made you then are not allowed to edit it anymore. It is like this for me at least maybe I am overlooking something.
Just some thoughts, I have plenty more but I need time to think about the best way to implement it in an organized fashion.

saedo — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 00:46Looking at the module, I actually don't see an option to allow you to edit/delete your own comments. There's just some generic permission "administer comments" which I'm assuming means administer all comments and not just your own. So that's a little too much.
Yes that is too much and that
Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 08:46Yes that is too much and that is exactally why only admins have it :/ Oh well.

Karli — Wed, 09/16/2009 - 21:39It's a small suggestion and i have no idea what kind of coding or change would be involved, but when I choose to reply to a comment thread (guild apps comes to mind), I can't see the other comments that were previously made, and often I want to address several of them at a time. So the ideal change would be to find a way to keep the existing comments visible when making a unique/original comment to a posting.
As far as thinking big about global changes, I suppose the first question would be to ask yourself what the goals of using the site would be. There is a heavy amount of focus on coordinating and supporting the raid progressions, which of course based on my raiding past I fully support. However, at present, the site is something I normally use as more of an out-of-game social tool. I think there are many people who use the site in this context as well, but I'm not sure if that's your goal of a long-term end user. That being said, it would be nice to see the profiles of actual people more fully fleshed out. If anything, having a way to navigate the site, make blogs/posts, comments, etc in ways that separate the in-game content with what Downfall has ultimately become, which is a social organization, would be nice. In short, sometimes I want to get down to game business, but other times I want to catch up on what my fellow guildies are up to.
The events section definitely could be updated to include more integration and more information. I know a lot of people who have been posting raids will include a "confirmed roster", which has been extremely helpful to me when I do decide to sign up for a raid. Beings that I only raid occassionally but still like to get in at times, I very much appreciate seeing that the person leading the raid already has 9 people in mind for spots, even if I only see 3 people actually signed up. There is nothing more frustrating than continually trying to get in to a raid that you see low/no sign-ups in only to find out that there was a mass of regulars who will be given a priority invite. And that is not to say that there is anything wrong with this....but, maybe sign-ups could be modified to have the event poster put a "priority list" when they create the event, and then when the user signs up, they could get a message that says something like "you are not on the priority list. this event already has x number of druids, and x number of tank/heal/dps classes". I like how the Looking for Group feature in game allows you to designate what roles you are comfortable doing; adding this to the events section would also be helpful.
That's my two cents for now, and as a side note just want to say on behalf of all guildies how much we appreciate all the time you do put in to making this little virtual hub a great place to visit for all of us.

Agoney — Thu, 09/17/2009 - 09:27Just going to ramble so don't expect full sentences!! :P
I think a player profile page, like you could say click on my name, find some info about me, upload rl pic/avatar, name/msn/aim, about me, interests, fav raid enct / etc / list of alts.
Have it link to blogs I/person the create as well as maybe forum posts? I'd like to see the blog space utilized by more people.. Right now its being used more as another way to post a topic easily rather then being used as a "blog". (imo)
Once I stop being lazy I'll upload what videos I can to youtube.. so maybe have a media section or something as well. Now that I'm finally get settled in my new places I'll be able to contribute more time to wow and df.
umm maybe a paypal button to donate money to agoney
Maybe add an MMO-champ link rather then wowinsider, or maybe be able to choose during profile setup..
