Scaron — Tue, 09/28/2010 - 16:21At a time when Salmon needed consistent raiders, Zelotos has been there. He really wants to be in guild and he's been steadily improving.
I really like this guy. I don't know how much salmon we've got left, but Zel seems a solid character to finish it out with us. He's got my vote too.

acetylcoa — Tue, 09/28/2010 - 15:30Ran naxx 10 today, and Zelotos, put out some real big numbers. Also was gung ho to help out with whatever we needed( tank for horseman, portals). Seems like a real nice guy with a real nice attitude.

Zelotos — Thu, 09/23/2010 - 12:46As I'm sure some or many of you have noticed, I have much work to do on my speed with bidding! I need this gear to keep up, and at this moment I'm truly disappointed in myself for not being on top of those Heroic tokens that have dropped. I am WELL aware of my inequity on this issue and I'm going to work extra hard, pay the frig attention when its loot time. "Sigh" I will do better with this i promise. I will see you guys at 6 server.

You can customize this macro to say

or better yet:

or what ever you want lol (just be kind to candyman as they will be handing out the loots)

Honestly, I don't think you
Scaron — Thu, 09/16/2010 - 08:02Honestly, I don't think you did too badly for your first ever Downfall run.
I was looking at your armory and I noticed that for pretty much every hardmode kill we made last night, it was your first time. Gratz! Because of that, it seems like your gear might be a tad behind much of our raid's gear so we'd expect a little bit lower dps. With that said, there are some things you can do and goals you can set which will help your future performance.
1. LOL, you're trying really hard to improve yourself and that's doing funny things to your hit rating. You WERE way over hit, now, you're way under. You're doing everything you can w/ hit gems etc (good and smart on you for that). I saw you picked up the tier 10.264 pants a couple of days ago...that ought to help out with your hit rating issue. Also, I noticed that you did NOT bid on the 277 gunship mittens last night...you should have! They went offspec instead, and you could've dumped your 251 gloves for 277 and put on the 264 pants and your hit issues would have gone away really quickly. Also, to be fair, we were without an additional 3% hit buff last night, so your hit rating of 271 was killing you...I bet you were looking at major misses if you weren't compensating for that...and that's not entirely your fault. I told you you could expect 3% hit and we didn't provide. That would have had a significant impact on your dps.
2. For a dude who was inexperienced with many of these hardmode fights, you followed directions well and held your own. We DO need to have a discussion about ghosts in HM DW. When you see ghosts, you've got to stop EVERYTHING and run away. AND KEEP RUNNING AWAY until that ghost despawns or it's abundantly clear that it's running away (and thus isn't targeted on you). That's a major change b/t HM DW and N DW.
3. You switched to adds properly on HM DBS (Shakos might be able to comment best about your performance on that add). But your damage percentages indicate to me that you were doing the right things.
4. Dot uptime: Something to work a bit on. Overall your immolate uptime was ok. Somewhere in the range of 70-80% most fights. I would say that a good number to shoot for is about 85% on a festergut style HM fight. Once you master dotimer, you'll get way good at this.
So, here's the deal. Pretty good job all things considered. You're a nice guy (if a bit quiet, which is fine) in vent. You generally paid attention to fight mechanics and you seem like you've done your homework on boss fights. Keep showing up consistently, sign up to salmon raids, and work on your dps. Those are my suggestions.
Oh, and bid on items (by whispering Ataraxia) if they're upgrades for you. We're more likely to want to keep you around if we've given you gear that you're going to use in raid!!!! :)
First raid with Downfall
Zelotos — Sun, 09/19/2010 - 15:11It was a real pleasure to run with a guild that seemed to effortlessly burn through the Icecrown Citadel instance with ease.
1. My hit rating is for sure one of my crutches. I've been using "Maghia's Misguided Quill" to compensate for that 271 rating. In retrospect, yes I should have switched out "Muradin's Spyglass" for the quill.
The loot distribution rules I had thought I'd read thoroughly. I should have asked you or others if I was unsure. Admittedly I was nervous.
2 . The H DW fight was unexpectedly difficult. On several occasions I found myself running from a ghost tracking on me, and into another ghost on someone else. Much room for improvement here...
3. The HM DBS fight was almost like easy mode with the system you guys have in place. Was a real pleasure to get that boss down! I've got to say Shakos is pro, he had the add we were working on targeted in half second of spawn. Only thing left for me to do was get in range of it. After a few attempts I had a good system in place. Overall awesome fight, and I love the way you guys get shit done.
4. Dots, DPS and my rotation. I've switched my spam and dot buttons up over the past week. Since the raid Thursday I've gotten my self into a few 10 mans and some fore leg time with the key board. Looking much better.
Thanks Scaron for the time and effort you've put into me and my character! I've decided that I want to be a member of Downfall. I like the people I've met, everyone was helpful when Iy asked some questions. I'll be less bashful, especially with loot! I should have asked since I was unsure how the Fill-in system worked. I will re-read that after this post.

Glad to see a couple warlock
Scaron — Wed, 09/08/2010 - 08:53Glad to see a couple warlock apps. You said in your app you're willing to change addons and playstyles, so I'm going to assume you were serious about that. There are several areas (mostly gemming) that could use some work. I'll list them off and I'd like to see you make changes or provide me math (or EJ citations) to show that I'm wrong...I'm going off the cuff here, and I'm wrong sometimes...but not often.
1. Spec. Mostly this looks okay, with a couple caveats (some minor some major).
Major caveat 1) Destro is not the top DPS spec either theoretically or practically for the content we're raiding. You've got dual spec, so I'd suggest picking up either Demo for raid DPS or affliction for pDPS. Your gear is actually set up pretty well for affliction and not badly for Demo. (Based on stat weights and scaling). Your gear is probably the weakest for Destro (not awful at all, but it could use some work).
Caveat 2) Your Destro spec is not optimal. (And I'm only commenting on your primary spec here, not your secondary as it appears that that secondary spec is--or at least should not be--not a raid viable spec.) You've got 2 points in molten skin and nothing in Soul Leech and Imp Soul Leech, also you could pull a point out of destructive reach (range has no affect on dps, and you're unlikely to have threat problems you can't remedy through a well-timed Soul Shatter). If you're going to use Destro and do slightly less DPS than other more optimal specs you should at least pick up some replenishment through ISL to give the raid some mana back. If you want to keep shadowfury, that's fine--very situational though and we usually only need 1 warlock to bring it...you may want to check out my Destro talent build (not an optimal DPS build, but it's there to bring shadowfury and replenishment to the raid.) See Scaron in armory. I would also personally opt to take some points out of demonic embrace and shift them over to Fel Synergy...some healers (though usually not good ones *cough* Atar's Shammy *cough*) don't put pets on grid and your pet being alive = major damage output.
Honestly, I would REALLY encourage you to grab an affliction spec. I think that once you're used to the playstyle, you'll do way more damage.
2. Gear. Again, mostly this looks pretty good. If you make a good impression on your app and get invited to raid, we'll have those hands upgraded in no time.
I know your hit trink is 264, but, meh. You're way over hit as it is (which, unfortunately, pending gear upgrades may be something you need to deal with for a while...I'm way over hit too, so I can't really ding you for that ;) ). (There are somethings that you CAN DO which i'll come back to). However, that trink sorta blows for you. You'd honestly be better off with any number of things- Illustration of the Dragon Soul, The eye-ball-ey trink from Razorscale, Nevermelting Ice Crystal (quite good for affliction actually), Muradin's Spyglass (from lootship). Work on replacing that. BUT. We all understand how trinkets go, do your best.
3. Gemming. Here's where your big work comes in. I"ll be honest, I'm not as familiar with the Destro theorycrafting as I was in Ulduar...however gemming straight haste as a destrolock doesn't seem right to me. A quick check of EJ confirms this suspicion. Gem spellpower. Here's some general advice from EJ:
What makes a bonus worth it? In basic, if the socket is...
So, for you that means those haste gems have to go. You don't need to pay attention to the advice about below hit cap cause, well, you're not. In yellow slots you'll be gemming Reckless Ametrine, probably (see above about socket bonuses). And that nightmare tear you have, you'll dump out for a Purified Dreadstone to activate your meta.
4. Enchants. Mostly good. Change your boot enchant to Tuskarr's Vitality, imo. You need runspeed more than you need crit (and as we've covered already, hit isn't doing anything for you.)
5. Professions. Skinning raid benefit (+crit) is not the best for you, not truly awful, but not the best. Mining is doing nothing for you. Any number of professions would be better choices: Tailoring, Enchanting, Engineering, Jewelcrafting probably being the most common. Also better than what you have would be Alchemy, or Inscription. I mean, let's be honest, Mining is way easy to level, the others, well, it'll cost you. But, prices are coming down and you could easily switch to something better for you. I'll leave this up to you, but you're not giving yourself optimal benefit with the professions you have.
EDIT. 6. UI. a) Go get grid for your raidframes, it'll take up less space and give you more info...trust me you'll thank me later. b) What addon do you use to track your dots and cooldowns? I don't see one on your screen. c) What's up with your keybinds? I see a random group of things keybound to your main button spamming keys (keys 1-6)...how do you play? Are you a clicker?
So, please respond by 1) making the appropriate changes, 2) theorycrafting along with me and supporting your points logically (math when appropriate), and 3) posting some parses--that's where the rubber really hits the road.
Re. Scaron
Zelotos — Wed, 09/08/2010 - 20:25I would first like to say that I'm impressed with the depth of your review, it will be a change of pace from the status quo and a welcome challenge
I will begin tonight with Grid, and some gems. I'm going to look into this Theorycrafting. Professions will take some time that I will begin this week. 1 year as a slave to my job has earned me a 1 week vacation that starts tonight.
I wanted to give some feedback on the points and topics you raised, to give some background.
So to start 1-6
1: Spec - My warlock was/is "until recently" my only character. I leveled as destruction. I taught myself my class. And came up with my own rotations. Which to be honest isn't to hard to figure out, though other warlocks might disagree. I do see other warlocks emphasis on "some" pulling higher dps than I could attain. It would push me to dps harder, work on timing my dots and c/d's better.
In regards to trying affliction vs demonology. I would probably try Demonology first. I have on numerous occasions dabbled with Affliction. It didn't seem to fit my play style. However Demonology is in part similar to the Destruction style of game play, and I would be willing to give it a go.
2: Gear - I actually have several of the above forementioned trinkets, I am using the hit trinket because I was having some hit issues! I do no like to see a "Miss" fly by my screen.
3: Gemming - This is something that I knew I needed to work on for some time. There was a period i was stacking straight spell power. Such to my learning curve I moved away from that to what you are seeing now. I have needed to re-gem since i bought that hit trinket, 446 is destruction hit-cap. I am currently at 415 hit still shy of the cap. However put me with a draenei and I could afford to lose some of that hit rating. I will re-gem accordingly thanks for the tips on that by the way!
4: Enchant - Tuskarr's Vitality, very true and I probably should have been using that enchant along time ago. I did read in multiple forum threads that speed is greater than icewalker. Moving out of say Defile before it tics would be quite helpful... You got me on this one, I had ignored the advice outlined in those threads.
5: Professions - Once again very good points raised regarding professions and there subsequent buff's. These were professions I had chosen at lvl 10 about 2 years ago. And mostly due to pure laziness I hadn't changed them to take advantage of more beneficial trades. I will suck it up and start the process of switching them out. I like Inscription - the shoulder enchant would be quite a nice attribute vs the Sons of Hodir boa. And Enchanting would be a nice addition to my rings. I suppose its time to step up or step down.
6: dot timer - I time my own dots, as a I have been playing this Destrolock for 2 years I know when they are about to expire and time my next one on the last tick. However with Affliction and the many dots that frequently drop off their target, a dot timer would be nice, and potentially would have made my Affliction experience a bit more enjoyable.
Play style - My play action bar 1-5 has most of my spam buttons within reach of my left hand, I do however use my mouse to spam incinerate and cast conflagrate while the left hand on keyboard is refreshing immolate, or throwing chaos bolts when off c/d. Some of those buttons you see are macro'd and have trinket automation, or command my imp to attack, which he only does on command as is he is on passive during raids.
Look forward to our next conversation, till then I have some work to do.
Zelotos
Ok, I had a few more minutes
Scaron — Fri, 09/10/2010 - 06:41Ok, I had a few more minutes to check on things and I have a few more suggestions and questions based on your responses.
1. You keep referring to "dots" in the plural, yet you play a destrolock. You only have one dot that goes in your maximum DPS priority list: Immolate. (Ok, two if you count Curse of Doom, but I don't count something that ticks once per minute and has a 1 minute CD as a dot because you can't clip it). That's not to say that you can never use Corruption, but it'll make your dps lower if it's a part of your standard priority list.
2. When I play as destro, I have, basically six buttons that I hit regularly enough to have keybound 1-6. They are, in this order, 1. Life Tap, 2. Immolate, 3. Conflagrate, 4. Chaos Bolt, 5. Incinerate, 6. Curse of Doom. My fingers constantly hover over buttons 2-5. Pinky stretch for lifetap, index finger stretch for Curse of doom. Pet attack is bound to "T" and I don't really need too much more than that. If you can get away from using your mouse to click incinerate, you'll be substantially more mobile. Think about how nice it'd be to be running stop for an instant and get off a quick conflagrate on a fight like marrowgar during bonestorm. If you can at all help it, don't click spells. (One caveat, I've not found a way to do more damage on trash than tabbing through targets and seeding them...I use a button for seed of corruption, but other than that I never click major dps spells).
3. Here's why I like dotimer. I've got it customized to show up on my screen right about next to my toon, it essentially serves as a head's up display for my dots, cooldowns, and auras. When I'm destro, it watches my chaos bolt CD, Conflag CD, Immolate duration, Curse of Doom duration. When I'm affliction it watches my LifeTap glyph aura, Haunt CD, Unstable Affliction, Curse of Agony, and Corruption. When I'm demo, it keeps an eye on any Molten core procs, life tap glyph aura, decimation, curse of doom, immolate, and corruption. I've just never been able to keep track of all that using an addon like OmniCC or CooldownCount. I need more.
4. I'm excited to hear how you like demonology. I really enjoyed it a lot when I was playing it. (I really only picked up a destro spec for some raid utility about 2 weeks ago.) More than any other spec, you need something to manage cooldowns, procs, and dots--see my notes above on dotimer. You could also try something like sexycooldowns or classtimers or fortexorcist. Try them and see what you like...I've tried classtimers, fortexorcist, and dotimer and I'm still a dotimer fan.
Dot timer and more...
Zelotos — Fri, 09/10/2010 - 16:02I will check out dot timer tonight, I've just added it to my assortment of add-ons. This application process has led me to some forum topics and threads that I had previously overlooked. Regardless of the outcome I will be more educated on my class than previously. And I want to say thank you. I am very pleased with my re gemming, and ISL minus Shadowfury has actually increased my overall dps significantly. More mana, less Life taps means more DPCT.
1. Yes as a Destrolock the only dot I'm at any time concerned with is Immolate. It would be a DPCT loss to throw Corruption, unless on the move.
2. Key binding nukes 1-6 makes sense when you put it as you did. To free up my spam of incinerate to grant myself greater mobility. I'll try it out tonight. I agree with tabbing through trash mobs, I too have found this to be the most effective on large pulls.
4. The dot timer add-on for Demonology will be very useful, I ran my first heroic with the new spech. Watching for Molton core was a chore. On that same topic I was looking into meta/ruin builds and I couldn't decide if decimation was worth the 2/2 talent points? Curious of your take and experience with Demonology.
Edit 2, I have a suggestion for you as a Destrolock. The imp has a server delay from the time you attack a target to the time it actually starts casting its Fire Bolt. To solve this a contributer to EJ noted this macro, and I have found it to be Very useful.
#showtooltip [spellname]
/cast [@pettarget]Firebolt
/cast [spellname]
embed this macro among your commonly used spells for increased Imp effectiveness.
Ok, it's official, I like
Scaron — Sun, 09/12/2010 - 14:11Ok, it's official, I like this guy. He sounds smart knows how to push his buttons (at least in theory) and knows about the pet attack macro that only elitist jerk geeks know about.
IMO let's get this guy into a raid or two of ours and see what he can do.
Decimation: TOTALLY worth 2/2 points!
you can get those points from mana feed and Imp demonic tactics.
Looking forward
Zelotos — Sun, 09/12/2010 - 19:14I am Looking forward to joining your raids. I'll look for you guys hopefully this coming week.
Thanks for your consideration!

Hope to see you around.
Cool. I look forward to
Scaron — Wed, 09/08/2010 - 21:21Cool. I look forward to watching your progress.
Re: Hit. You're trying to get hardcapped if you're aiming for 446. In one of our raids, you'll generally be able to count on having the 3% Imp Faery Fire or Misery and you'll also have the 1% hit from a draeni in your group. Optimally, you want to be aiming for 342 hit...not the 446 hard cap. If you do that, and have the raid buffs I just mentioned, you'll be assured to never miss.
I may have more re: keybindings but it's late and i'm tired. More tomorrow.
