Computer Building Advice/Suggestions
Enixa — Sun, 11/06/2011 - 09:54
Hello everyone!
It's Turth checking in, for the new guildies that don't know me. Don't worry, you aren't missing much.... How is everyone? Hope shit's going well for errr bodi. Quick update from San Francisco, Things are good, im about a month away from a business startup taking off. (Food Truck) I also got extremely lucky a few weeks back and won a jackpot playing poker at a casino. Anyways, that's not what this post is about.
I've taken pretty much a 1+year hiatus from MMO's with the collapse of Nobo's 10 man. Forgot the name sorry/ I've been waiting for a new MMO. SWTOR. Obviously right?
I'm building a new computer and was looking for some advice as too what items i can get that are equivalent to others for cheaper if you will. My computer is about 3 years old (Built by our FABULOUS ex-guild leader Garreth!) and I feel it's time to upgrade.
I can post a list of items I have lined up to show what I'm in line to buy if anyone wants so that they can compare. But if anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated. I hope all is well for all of my old friends from the WoW world.

Glad to see some familiar
Enixa — Mon, 11/07/2011 - 12:00Glad to see some familiar faces! Here's how I've been looking at my specs off newegg:
Mobo:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131792
Why this: Next gen item, meaning no need for replacement unless I do something wrong. (For a few years at least) Also HDMI cable because I plan on streaming this to my TV....
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
Why This: Another Next gen item however the bugs have been reworked from what I've read allowing higher capacity and functionality.
Ram: This is where I got caught up. I know I want roughly 3GB but haven't been able to find any that fit my Mobo. Thoughts?
Graphics Card: With such a wide range of options, I'm leaving this blank. I have 2 or 3 I've looked at but am a bit skeptical about them. My price range is 200-300$
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153136
Hard Drive: As far as HD's go, mine is fine. I would completely blank it and then re use it. Worth it or no? It's like 3 years old or so...
I am also torn between getting an SSD and not. Input? Keep in mind, I'm not worried about a case or fans and cosmetics because that's stuff I can do on my own.
Better options, cheper identical options? Thanks for any inout peeps :D
If you buy a new hard drive,
Agoney — Wed, 11/09/2011 - 14:10If you buy a new hard drive, do it ASAP. There was huge huge flooding in Thailand, and prices of HDs are already jumping..
http://boingboing.net/2011/11/03/thailand.html
With that said, I'd go for an SSD. Just throw your OS on it, you can do okay with just a 60gb one. Use the other HD for storage and apps.
I'd just up the memory though.. It's actually dirt cheap now. Newegg has these black novemember deals each day so watch for those. I think I saw like, 16gb ddr3 for $94, insane price for that considering two years ago 4 gb cost me $100.
Well some people have a
Disrupter — Mon, 11/07/2011 - 13:42Well some people have a particular preference for cpus (Intel or AMD) as well as a particular preference for video cards (Radeon or Nvidia)...
Normally I would lean towards AMD CPUS and Nvidia GPUS. AMD usually is more bang for your buck and the EVGA Nvidia cards can come with a life time warranty if you take the time to find them.
Assuming you already have a Case and HDD's you are then looking at purchasing a Power Supply, Mobo, CPU, Video Card, RAM and possibly a SSD.
Currently I use an EVGA 570 GTX "Super clocked" (factory over clocked to near 580 specfications with a life time warranty). If you go with an Nvidia card you likely want EVGA because of their quality and excellent warranties.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130595 $359 Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130622 $349 Video Card
The second video card is a slightly smaller model, if you are considered that the larger model won't fit, and slightly cheaper. From what I've read the first card has a better cooling system than the second but both come with a lifetime warranty.
As for a CPU I personally am interested in the new AM3+ socket 8 core cpu.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103960 $279 (3.6 ghz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103961 $219 (3.1 ghz)
As for a Motherboard you would need a new AM3+ socket model. The prices range from around $100 to $300. You stated you wanted an HDMI socket on the motherboard, which would limit your choices quite a bit, but you would already have a HDMI socket on your video card if you purchased either of those video cards so I will omit that requirement.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131736 $189
I believe that motherboard is the best bang for your buck.
If you decide you need ram, as I do not know what your current ram is, this is my preffered option:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145290 $79 (2x2 gigs 1600 mhz)
At this point your price is around $1,100 after tax/shipping.
As for a SSD we would need to know the estimated amount of space you would like as there is a wide range of sizes and prices. The prices range from around $100-$350 depending on the size. You can get a 120 gigabyte sata III version from:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227706 $189.99 (169 after rebate)
I took the time to add all the items and shipping costs up and it is about $1,200 before taxes for the Power Supply, Mobo, Cpu Video Card, Memory, and SSD. This is a bit more than your preferred ~$1,000 but you could omit the SSD to cut it down to $1,010 before taxes. If the SSD makes it too much you could puchase it later.
bump!

What is your current computer build?
What are you willing to spend/want out of it?
. Could you perhaps tell us this information?

I don't pretend to know what all that shit is, lol

Atakheal — Sun, 11/06/2011 - 20:39wait for december there are new tech to come and better prices. Nvidia will lower their prices to all their video cards.
