ugh I had a huge post about this I wrote but when I sent it my internet died for a minute and the entire thing wouldn't send. So my priest is approaching 70 and I'm hoping to spec him holy and trying my hand at healing. Of course, I wouldn't heal all the time. I would probably just respec to what's needed at the time. I was wondering if all the priests/ healers of Downfall could
A. List some must-have items for a healing priest and some must-have items for a shadow priest.
B. Basically give me some pointers on how to heal a 5 man, a 10 man, and even a 25 man (You never know xD)

After that you can decide if you prefer CoH or DS spec, both are effective if used correctly, but CoH tends to be incredibly helpful in raids. I like DS, but that's just me. As you build some of your gear and start grabbing purplez you can tailor your gear and gem choices to thespec you choose.
There are a few talents that you must must must always have no matter what (healing) spec, so holler at me in game if you want me to tell you about a few of them.

Scarab of the Infinite Cycle
Bangle of Endless Blessings
and
Serpentcrest Life-Staff
also as much of the d3 set as you can get.
Nothing pre heroics stands out really for shadow. As keisjaa said, you need to have something to track your dots. Nothing is more important than that.

Always start a pull with PoM on your tank because it helps with his/her aggro. Keep a renew on the MT to fill in the gaps of your Greater Heals and Flash Heals. Use rank 2, and 4 Greater Heals for MT healing. Even use rank 1 if needed. Don't be a pure Flash heal freak. You'll be oom before you know it. Use it for trash and for a "oh shit" fast heal.
Make a macro to combine your Inner Focus with PoH sense it is the highest mana cost spell.
I'd say go 23/38/0 to start off with and get used to using different ranks of Greater Heal and then go 20/41/0 to see if you like CoH.
That's my opinion. I really think you'll like healing. Healing as a priest is really fun, because you have a lot of options to choose from when healing.

Depending on your healing method i Use Clique & Grid & just have all my healing functions bount to mouse buttons(granted i have a 7 button mouse) so just click the appropriate button combo over the little Grid square(leaves your left hand for movement & such)
I have triggers set up in Parrot/SCT/Powerauras to show procs & status effects
Parrot/SCT: Focus, low mana low Health,focused casting
Powerauras: weakened soul, target is banished/poly'd/slept(same graphic in purple/blue/orange for the class color cc'g them) also have one that shows if hunter's mark is on the target just above my Dfilter line.
there's also trinket pop macros & such that i an post if you need them

2. Pitbull, and configure it to really show some very hard numbers about target, Target of target, and ToTT health.
3. Focus target macro and focus frame (ask keisjaa) for shackles
4. GridStatusHots and GridRaidDebuff addons for grid are a must
5. Trinket pop macros for pure +heal if ya need it.
6. 5 man: lots of renew and flashes, 10 man: yay 10 player mass dispell, 25 man: HELLO CoH SPAM!
