Getting a Backup External Harddrive

The noob is back, my friends, with a question about external harddrives.

I need to get one.

I've been doing some research, and it seems it comes down to getting one with USB 2.0 and eSATA compatibility, but I can't find anything that explains what eSATA is in dummy terms. Please help. What are the things I should be looking for in an external harddrive, as someone who is TOTALLY COMPUTER ILLITERATE. The "plug and play" thing is very very important.

For your uses Popple, ignore eSATA. USB 2.0 will be just fine.
