Hey,
I'm going to be heading off to college at the end of this year and I need to buy a new laptop. Does anyone have any recommendations. i have a $2,000 limit. University of Wyoming supports Dells, Apple, HP, and Gateway. Let me know which I should get. And yes I will be getting the upgrade to a 4g RAM. Thanks

Go with a mac because
Vulk — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 17:42Go with a mac because computers are like air conditioning... it works fine until you open Windows. You'll find I love my macs and always recommend them! With a $2000 limit you should get a regular MacBook because the MacBook Pros start at $2000 unless you get a used one. I'm not sure if its standard on MacBooks but on the Pros it comes with a program called Boot Camp that lets you load Windows onto it as well so if you absolutely need to run a windows based program you can still do so.

I have to agree with Jos,
Vossa — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 15:19I have to agree with Jos, Apple laptops are very nice and you can do almost anything on them. I own a MacBook Pro and I love it! If you adjust some settings you can stretch the battery life a bit and having to go to a few class before i get home to charge it is very nice.
Nothing to see here, move

PolySci and History . . .
Dufe — Wed, 04/30/2008 - 21:18PolySci and History . . . I'm guessing you won't be needing to sketch out so many diagrams - tablet is probably not as much of a bonus for you. I'd honestly try to stick to a smaller laptop in any case, 14inch screen at the largest. The two Dell models I mentioned should do great.
I'm a Poly Sci and History

My affiliation with downfall is somewhat dim and distorted. I know Grovinski very well, we went to high school together and he always thought of me as an ass but I think we've passed that problem. I hope that answers your question. I also hope to apply for the guild but I'm waiting for a new computer so I can put the stats in plus i'm only a level 44 not a 70 and I prolly wont be accepted in as a 44. So ya.

Also, what kinds of classes
Agoney — Wed, 04/30/2008 - 09:05Also, what kinds of classes are you taking. Might want to tailor your laptop to meet the demands of those classes (IE, CaD Classes, photo/video editing, etc).
And ya, who are you?
Other folks will jump on me
Dufe — Tue, 04/29/2008 - 22:14Other folks will jump on me for this, but I recommend a tablet for college. It's sooo nice for note taking. Since durability is HIGHLY important for a tablet, I would look for a pretty solid one, like the one below. Customize that model as needed.

For a non-tablet, look at something like the Dell Inspiron 1420 or XPS M1330. Be careful about getting a very big laptop, as it will be harder to use in most of your classes. If you want a bigger screen for gaming, just buy an external monitor and keyboard and leave them on your desk at home.
If you were hoping for more specific advice, let me know. Also, what is your connection to Downfall?
