It's our site, but, like, not
garreth — Fri, 06/06/2008 - 17:28
I guess imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery. I'm both proud of this, but at the same time... I dunno:
Now, when I built this site I initially used a skin that I've adapted and updated to meet our needs. The fact that these pages are using a similar skin isn't a big deal. It's a pretty common occurance in the content management system world.
It's just that... well, I actually edited a lot of the template files and CSS files myself to tweak it to what we (and they) have now. I don't know how they got those very custom changes to reflect in their site. Examples of this are the side listing RSS feeds at the bottom of the page, the wowjutsu badge javascript block, item rollovers, etc.
There's also a LOT of, well, let's call it "inspiration" in their actual content and layout. The pinned Addon post, "handbook", gallery titles, and this little gem at the top of the front page of both our sites:
"If you're new here, register and come by the forums and say "Hi". Check
out our articles, blogs and all the various things we have going on. If
you're new, these links may help you: Apply to guild, View raid calendar, Download the addon pack, View all recent site activity." Those are Garreth Words.
Same when you register: "Hello and thank you for taking the time to register at Covenant-guild.us!
Please fill out all registration fields. The fields "Main", "Guild" and
"Server" are all mandatory. We delete all registrations where these
fields do not line up with actual in-game toons. Your "Username" does
not have to be that of your main (although I encourage it), as long as
you've filled in the "Main" field. In other words, "Jim" who plays the
toon "Lolpally" could register on the site with "Jim" as long as
"Lolpally" is input in the Main field.
After submitting your registration, you'll receive an email to verify
that you aren't some spam-bot. It'll contain your password and a link
back to the site to activate your account. Welcome to our community!" That's me talking... but on another site..
However, honestly, I think the guy is doing a good thing. He's taking up the lead to get his guild started with a kick ass web and organization system and it looks like his crew is really getting excited to use it. I mean, hell, he and I both used the same tutorial site (www.psdtuts.com) to make our site banners! Web dev isn't about being the most 100% unique, it's about offering your visitors a good experience. I'm glad Downfall could inspire them! (Might ask them to change some wording or at least credit us a little :P)

garreth — Mon, 06/09/2008 - 09:25Well, the thing is, I'm kind of HAPPY for them actually. I mean, they were able to get a kick ass site off the ground really quickly and offer their guildies a great place. Hell, half of what Downfall is because of our site and various activiites through it.
Maybe just changing the wording and I'll be OK with it ;)

Shihli — Mon, 06/09/2008 - 09:06Tempted to make an application over there and ask their guild leader/webmaster if he missed the day in school where they went over plagiarism. Perhaps then emphasize that he likely hasn't advanced that far yet.
Maybe make fun of his mother in the process.
I'm with Ag. It's one thing to follow someone's template when you lack the "know-how" to make something yourself, but it's another thing entirely to leave the template completely unchanged and take credit for the work yourself.

Agoney — Sat, 06/07/2008 - 00:53It wouldn't of been a big deal if he/she made it somewhat original.. but come on..leaving almost exact quotes and almost exact but slightly edited content.. Just sad, especially since that person is taking complete credit.

It's so majestic.
Fuck it, i'm transferring over to their guild.

garreth — Fri, 06/06/2008 - 18:30Just to be 100% clear, the layout on this site (ie the gray borders, the columns, the color scheme) is NOT my original work. It's one of thousands of "skins" that are available for free to Drupal site admins. However, I have spent literally hundreds of hours of my own life setting everything up and customizing various template settings and CSS code. All of the positioning of blocks and content, as well as all embedded content, is me.

Aidin — Fri, 06/06/2008 - 18:04TBH, "borrowing" and customizing are totally something I would do.
I am a wanna-be coder and graphic artist. During the learning process your skills in these areas may not be middle of the road much less top notch. There's a fine line between your imagination, and your ability to pour it from your mind onto your project. I find myself looking for outside inspiration that would make my process easier. Weather it's a few images from multiple sources all melded together in my own work, or if it's a section of code or a layout that someone else used. The cool thing about code is when you "borrow" it...you also learn quite a bit...next time maybe you give it a shot on your own.
I hope this fella learned something from your hard work G, and wasn't just taking the easy way out. However, I never once borrowed something without giving credit where it was due. (except maybe school projects, but we get a get out of jail free card for class work..lol). I honestly think he owes you some credit though...seek and hopefully you shall find...that is if he wasn't being ...lazy.

But honestly the website layout is phenomenal. I don't blame the guy for trying to do right by his guild. He could at least give you credit, though
