Popple's Travels in Turkey
Popplegem — Sat, 06/28/2008 - 00:04
Dear Blog,
So I'm taking Gar's advice and moving this to the Blog area. Do people actually read these things? We'll find out.
Turkey has a vast array of interesting bugs. I don't mean the macro kind, I mean the micro kind. I've been sick twice now, once with a massive sinus infection that gave me some killer antibiotics and now with a fantastic stomach flu.
The days are long and require 8 hours of field hiking and mapping. I'd just like to say that I hate field work. I want a cubicle career, I think.
All that taken into account, things here are still going well.
The weridest thing about Turkey is the call to prayer 5 times a day. We've finally gotten to the point where we can sleep through the 5 AM prayers, which probably means we'd all make bad bad muslims.
You know you're in a theocracy when in EVERY town you get a call to prayer and it echoes throughout the hills so you get it in bad stereo effect.
It's cheap here. Very very cheap. In one week I spent 20 dollars and got only fun stuff. Cookies are like 50 cents for a roll of 10 cookies. It's great. And you wanta Fanta, don't you?
With this written, I'm off to do a cross section before I start throwing up again.
Love, PG

fanta fanta fanta, dont you
Nellem1 — Mon, 06/30/2008 - 00:58fanta fanta fanta, dont you want a fanta?!? =P
I had the opportunity to visit Dubai, UAE 4 times last year. Fanta is abundant to say the least.
Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well. Let's hope you can get past that quickly and get to enjoy the new area that youre visiting.
Along with the random 5 times a day prayer, goes the random church that you find in some places. I remember walking by a church right as prayer got out, couldnt even tell that it was anything remotely close to a church until they opened the doors. interesting to say the least.
Also, if you can find a Souk (not sure if they have them in Turkey, but it's possible considering their Muslim background), I would suggest going there. A Souk is an outdoor market. They can sell anything from fruit to top end electronics. Bargaining is welcome and encouraged at these places. You can find some really good things, but be careful of the fraudulant things.
Hope that helps =D. Good luck to ya.
what doesnt die right away, will always have my ticking on their mind.
cubicle only jobs suck. go
Sabre — Mon, 06/30/2008 - 00:39cubicle only jobs suck. go for something that has some time in the field, travelling and at a desk. I passed on a job that required knowing how to steer a boat, ride a morotcycle and setup phototraps on islands so that i could stay on my current island a bit longer, where its warmer =)
I hope you git feeling
