Dufe — Sat, 08/16/2008 - 23:49You can still use the downranked spells to generate less threat if need be, they just won't be any cheaper mana-wise, e.g.; you'll still have rank 1 heal in your spell book. (At least that's how it sounds from what I've seen thus far.)
O well then that hopefully

saedo — Sat, 08/16/2008 - 23:17Is it times you don't have salv in 5/10 mans? Cause with the elimination of salv in Wrath, tanks will innately generate more threat on their own.

We've been very forthcoming with the truth. Let's
look at it from this angle. Downranking added a lot of extra
considerations to design and balance. When people downrank, it changes
the complexities of different encounters and how those complexities
play into the design. We don't want to penalize people using low ranked
spells because this doesn't quite address the issue of downranking
either. So what we're doing instead is finding a consistent cost of
mana across the board and making it so that when you rank up, you get
more benefit out of that higher ranked spell. The cost should remain
largely consistent as you go along.
What Zarhym has said and what Wryxian has said are not at odds with
each other. One is simply saying "this wasn't intended" the other was
saying "if you're going to do it, this is the strategy people are
using" and highlighting someone elses' post. We are not advocating
downranking, but we are now making it a thing of the past.
That said, there are other things that people need to remember when considering this change:
due to this change, and will be ready to implement new spells,
abilities, or talents to resolve those issues as we feel are necessary.
Consider that we are working to make sure that the impact of these
changes isn't going to affect people negatively.
into account the added bonuses of intellect, buffs, potions, etc. Base
mana is just that. It's looking at the very foundation of your
character and basing the mana cost from that.
playstyle a bit to accomodate this change. Whether it's focusing more
on regeneration, efficient allocation of healing, and utilizing the
full range of spells and abilities within their repertoire.
made, but these will be made based on testing and experiences within
the beta. This change isn't being removed, but will be adjusted as
needed. Keep in mind also, that this change affects all ranks of spells
and abilities that use mana so we will be keeping a close eye on what
is occurring at both the lower end and at the higher end to achieve the
best possible results overall.
abilities and are still getting used to what these can do and where the
potential issues may be. The mana change is only one factor in this
experience and it's important to keep an eye on how these changes are
affecting everything as a whole.
this is. Pointing fingers, or "he said, she said" isn't going to help
with getting the maximum value out of this change. Testing, trying
things out, weighing and balancing experiences and reporting them to
us, this is important. This is the best possible time for this feedback
because changes are occurring right now. Could more changes follow even
after the release of the expansion? Of course. We are always watching
and keeping tabs on what is occurring with players.
In the end of all this, it's important to realize that we aren't
making this change arbitrarily. We also understand that this change was
going to bring about a lot of conversation. The message is still the
same as when we first put it up. We are getting rid of downranking, but
we are doing it in a way that we feel is the most beneficial and are
keeping a close eye on what may still need adjusted to maximize the
overall benefit of this change.

I agree with Sorahn,
shadowcel — Fri, 08/15/2008 - 21:05I agree with Sorahn, downranking is definately something I use on occasions for faster cast rate, but in raid settings I think taking out the option for downranking will make things more simple, since it was really just a trick healers with trigger happy fingers and mana problems got used to. Implementing this change will probably piss some people off but overall taken into consideration those that were overwhelmed by the idea of it and that were expected to use downranking sometimes, this will help out more people than it will annoy.

It's a little interesting
Sorahn — Thu, 08/14/2008 - 14:43It's a little interesting that they only adjusted the mana cost. While downranking is mostly a healer thing, I do use it occasionally. Mostly for pvp when because the downranked spells cast faster (i.e. lvl 1 frostbolt in WSG). So, I'll still downrank. If they truly wanted to get rid of downranking, they should simply replace the level n-1 version of the spell with the level n version of the same thing when you train it.

As you may have noticed, in this latest build we
have updated spells and abilities using mana. These no longer cost a
fixed amount and instead they're a percentage of your base bana, not
including any mana increase from Intellect. For the most part this
should mean mana-based spells and abilities are costing roughly the
same amount as they do in the live game, though there might be some
slight changes either up or down. But we have tried to keep them as
close as possible to the same mana cost for a level 70 as they are now
in the live game.
What will change though is that lower rank spells will lose their
appeal. We have made this mana cost change purely to prevent
downranking, which is an unintended technique that we were not at ease
with. We've previously tried ways to discourage it, but have decided
that we'd rather find a solution than continue to find ways to penalise
those who choose to downrank. The solution we chose was to make
downranking obsolete, encouraging people to always use their highest
rank of each spell and nothing else. The highest rank of a mana-based
spell or ability will now remain the most powerful effect, but at the
same mana cost as earlier ranks.
We're certain that for some people this will cause a period of
readjustment. Hopefully removing a few more of the extra buttons you've
been pressing will eventually be seen as a good thing; it might also be
easier for some people to do their role without having to learn to
downrank. We are anticipating such a big change may have some teething
problems, perhaps causing balance issues, and we're all set to deal
with them as they arise. In the meantime, we appreciate any comments
and feedback related to this change.
