The Hard Drive

So pop quiz for all you computer nerds. Here's the scenario:
Computer just shuts down. Like crashes hard, sudden black screen and all. Power light starts flashing. Can't even turn the damn thing off. And the high temperatures that occured probably didn't help at all.
Anyways, upon pulling the plug to get it off. Opening the case, spray some dust away. Turning it back on, it would do the standard bootup til it loads Windows. Thats when everything remains black and only hard drive activity happens.
So I leave it off a while, put a fan to it, and finally after a while, turning it back on and everything seems normal.
Would I be correct to assume I kinda overheated the hard drive? Would it be a one time stressed thing or a path of a dying drive?
I've had hard drive problems before where it'd just stall and do nothing and that forced a replacement. Not gonna look foward to needing a whole new one and reinstalling everything. Though I do still have it under a warrenty, if only I can copy stuff over to a new drive before they jack it. Though, might need it to permanently die before they'd allow an exchange. lol
But at least now I run WoW off an older, smaller, seemingly more reliable hard drive. lol Guess I should copy some more of the important things over.

Both are easily possible
Dufe — Mon, 08/18/2008 - 15:48Both are easily possible with video card failures. Windows and the related drivers' accesses to the video card are different that those from the bios. Also, any peice of hardware failing whiel the computer is running is HIGHLY likely to cause a lockup.
Fans seemed to be running.

If it's a vid card prob, wouldn't I not see all the things happening pre-windows boot? It only turned black at the moment windows was supposed to be loading up and stayed that way.
And that first crash was strange then. Completely unresponsive, couldn't hit reset, couldn't hit power button, couldn't pass go, just power lights flashing.

Agreed - continued HD

You cant overheat a
starstalker — Mon, 08/18/2008 - 14:44You cant overheat a harddrive. There are no temp recorders in a HD, and the operating temperature has more to do with the lifetime failure rate than performance.
I'd agree with G, check the video card and see if its clogged. 2nd, check the cpu and see if thats clogged as well.
Lastly, the going-to-black after a reboot could have just been your computer "giving you the bird" for the unexpected shutdown, and could be unrelated (as if you had crashed from any other reason).
Check your video card and
