MMORPG Survey 1. Do you
everstar — Wed, 09/10/2008 - 17:45MMORPG Survey
1. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
Yes
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
3. How many hours per week do you play?
Maybe 50+
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
Well I didnt really have an opinion about RPGs before I started playing them, but they are a great way to unwind with your split personality =p
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
Yes, build up a better communication and people skills which can benefit future possible jobs =p knowledge about working with others, uhhh i don't know about other people, but i relate (not intentionally) a lot of things IRL to WoW and it helps my memory skill somehow...yes, i know, its weird.
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
yes, if you have an addictive or clingy personality (like myself) it can be quite hard letting go of the games you get hooked on.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
nope =p

1. Do you play a game that
mav — Wed, 09/10/2008 - 17:391. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
WoW for about... 3 years I think.
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
Consistent Gamer
3. How many hours per week do you play?
15 during the week. Around 10 or more on the weekends. So about 25-30 hours.
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
I originally thought MMORPGs were a waste of time. I believed the people who played them were geeks with no lives and were completly out of touch with reality. However, once i started to play, I began to realize people playing the games had normal lives and could balance their game time and their work and social life very well (Of course there are exceptions :P).
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
I believe online MMOs are VERY beneficial. They teach team work and people skills. Before I played WoW, I was a REALLY shy awkward teenage boy. Now after interacting with so many people daily, i've become much more outgoing and my people skills improved drastically. However, i'm still an awkward teenage boy.
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
Like anything else in this world, RPGs should be taken in moderation. There are always people who play the game WAAAY too much and their life outside of the game suffers because of it. I think the fact that we're creatures of habit has something to do with it. Once we get in the habit of playing constantly, it feels normal and necessary to spend all your time on the computer. However it isn't.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
While the gameplay of WoW and most other MMORPGs is fun and addicting. I think its the people that really keep me into it. I know many people in WoW who I consider to be good friends and I think they are what keeps me playing this game for the most part.
.... totally didn't do this to procrastinate from my Euro history homework.

1. Do you play a game that
Sorreah — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 12:131. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
WoW
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
3. How many hours per week do you play?
25+
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
I did not understand how people could blow off their real life friends who wanted to do something or who would make plans suddenly to "raid" or other on line events. I get it now i understand that these names on a screen are more than "random person A" i know these people and have the pleasure of calling them friends so my commitments to them hold weight.
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
This is a very social environment and can compare to every other organized social event (clubs, sports teams, etc. )
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
Yes, This is not life. It is easy to get obsorbed by the environment and lose track or the real world you are sitting in. This may be a fun distraction for children but it should not be a replacement for actual human contact.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
There are pros and cons to mmorpgs and the world they have become. before you judge do some research and try but remeber like everything else in moderation and with an open mind.
1. Do you play a game that
garreth — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 09:511. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)? WoW
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself? D
3. How many hours per week do you play? 16 - 25
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed? My initial opinion regarding RPGs was that they were only for sexless social outcasts whom had a penchant for furries and/or elf-porn. After finding WoW and playing almost daily for the better part of 3 years, I can say that there is definitely a lot more sexin' going on but the furries are still a factor. I kid :P Of course what I -- and most people who play WoW -- have come to find out is that the people whom play this game, at least in our circle, are very cool and caring folks. For every antisocial separationist, there are five real-life moms or dads or every-day Joes.
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how? The community, foundation of friendships and teamwork that arises innately from these games is absolutely beneficial. From a simply educational perspective, people learn leadership, teamwork, problem solving, math, social and technical skills. From an interpersonal perspective, people find they have a wider, more diverse set of friends with whom they can talk to almost any time. A lot of WoW scenarios carry over into "real life". I've had more than a few encounters regarding management and human resources at my job that I was at least familiar with due to engagements within WoW.
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how? Anything that directly rewards a human being for a trivial action can cause addictive personalities to go haywire. Time is the biggest factor here. People that approach WoW (or any other RPG) like it's a game of Pokemon ("Gotta catch 'em all!") are going to be royally screwed, since they're going to burn all their time collecting everything in game. These are they people we hear about in the news.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs... MMO's are about people, not pixels. As soon as it becomes all about "loot" or "just one more quest" then it's just a stupid addictive game. A misperception among those with no exposure to MMOs is that people play MMOs to get AWAY from other human beings. In fact, the reason (in my experience at least) most of us log in is to be with the people we enjoy spending time with.

Pettingzoo — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 09:491. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
Yes - Everquest for nearly 6 years, WoW for a little over 1 and a half.
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
a. Not a gamer
b. Casual gamer (play sometimes)
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
d. Hardcore gamer
3. How many hours per week do you play?
During summer, no less than 30 hours a week. During the school year...well...i haven't played a game in 3 days.
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
My initial opinion of them was that you had to be a loser with no real life friends/obligations to be successful. This opinion has been totally changed, and I now realize taht it is possible to have a normally functioning life AND play an MMORPG.
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
I believe that anything done purely for enjoyment can be beneficial. Stress release is very important to mental and physical health. As long as I am enjoying life, there has not been a moment wasted.
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
They will only be problematic if you have difficulty knowing when to stop (for reference: freshman year GPA was 1.89. current GPA is 3.24 - I have learned when to turn off the game and open my books.)
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
MMORPGs have been drawn as a terrible, life-ending, addicting monster. The truth is that MMORPGs are just like any other hobby - you have to put a limit on them. An individual must have the self control to step away from the game and attend to real-life duties.
1. Do you play a game that
jaibyrd — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 09:471. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
Yes I play World of Warcraft
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
a. Not a gamer
b. Casual gamer (play sometimes)
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
d. Hardcore gamer
C. Consistant. I play regularly.
3. How many hours per week do you play?
I play 20 to 40 hours a week depending on the demands of my week.
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
I thought they were for younger people and took skills I didn't have and would not want to have. I also wondered why people did it. Yes, my opinion changed when I tried the game (just to see what my children were spending their time doing online).
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
I feel they are beneficial, not only as a social network for isolated people, but because the contact with other people/keyboarding/concentration/multitasking/time management/organizational tasks involved improve real life skills in those areas as well. Living in an isolated area or being socially/culturally isolated in real life can be mitigated by playing online in a social setting. Playing online, in the best sense of the word will strip each of us of our preconceived perceptions derived from judging each other by the way we look/talk/interact in the real world. We must judge each other on the competence/intelligence/thoughtfulness/humour that is expressed ingame without visual clues. We can connect with people all over the world and forget about all the barriers that we construct in our daily lives to detach from each other.
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
The problems associated (Playing RPG problems are well documented including addiction/neglect of physical/social/mental contact in the real world) have more to do with addictive or dissociative personality traits then the actual RPG games that exist.
Having said that there are people who prey on the lonely and weak ingame as they would in real life. Gamers can be brutal to each other (as the perception of personal responsibility can be suspended because 'it's just a game') and can in fact bully and intimidate each other ingame.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
Yes, I like to heal. No, I've never been shadow.

Fjork — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 09:171. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)? Yes
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
a. Not a gamer
b. Casual gamer (play sometimes)
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
d. Hardcore gamer
3. How many hours per week do you play? 10-20
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed? To easy to get lost(EQ), no understanding of what was going on(EQ), pvp unbalanced(Lineage). Yes it has changed(wow, AOC, Ultima Online, WC3, Warhammer).
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how? Yes and no. Yes, they are beneficial as to creating an ever-expansive outlet for gamers to have a 'never-ending game', however they limit the creativity of today's children. How many children do you know that make up their own 'adventures' as opposed to playing out scripted adventures someone else has made?
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how? Depends on if you are speaking of addiction, if so, yes. My friend had to sell his copy of w0w b/c his 2nd grader wouldn't stop playing, would wake up to quietly play in the middle of the night, etc. Games are just like most other things in the world, addiction can be caused by carelessness.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs... I LOVE MMORPGs!!! Just not the cheap useless kind that are popping up 24/7 all over the internet lately. "Play for free, we're going to show you 300 commericals at a 400 latency b/c of the massive video commercials we've built in!"

Dragon — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 08:511. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
Yeaup
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
d. Hardcore gamer
3. How many hours per week do you play?
Ummm 40-50 >.>
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
I was hesistant and didn't like the concept at all. And yes it has, although there are still some things that an MMORPG just cant do that a regular RPG Can.
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
For the most part it allows for a decently harmless social environment. More so, most times when people play they are at home so you don't have to worry about them doing anything stupid to a point. (Like say going out with their friends to party and driving home drunk)
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
The time sink. When you first get into them you are spotty with your playtime not often on in long bursts. The further you progress the more often you are on. It definitely requires some discipline to manage your time online.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
For the most part I consider them one of the safer and cheaper vices one can invest in
Developers: "Our nerfs will blot out the sun."
Paladins: "Then we will QQ in the shade."
1. Do you play a game that
Aidin — Tue, 09/09/2008 - 08:411. Do you play a game that is classified as an online RPG (ex. WOW, Everquest, RS)?
WoW, WoW and more WoW.
2. What kind of gamer would you consider yourself?
c. Consistent gamer (play regularly)
3. How many hours per week do you play?
40+
4. What was your initial opinion of online RPGs (before ever playing) and has it changed?
I never really got into RPGs even though I was always a video game console person. When I started playing WoW, the graphics, and the imagination behind the game lured me in and the sense of community and the friends I've made have kept me hooked.
5. Do you feel online RPGs can be beneficial? If so, how?
If we're talking MMORPG, the sense of community and the friendships that are made can be a huge benefit. I'm an older gamer (35) with kids. We don't get to many "adult" outings, most center around the kids. So WoW and the community in my guild is my "social scene".
6. Do you think online RPGs can be problematic? If so how?
While the social aspect may be a benefit for a 35yr old mother of 2...it may not be the greatest at shaping the life of a child. Children still have so much more to explore and learn in life, that would better be learned outside of a video game.
7. Any other comments about MMORPGs...
I suppose there are worse things in the world to be addicted to, but I do believe I am a bit addicted to my WoW.
