Lock DPS last night
Tankard — Thu, 10/16/2008 - 15:38
I've been looking over the parses from last night and the locks got their asses handed to them on the meters. The majority of changes to locks were damage nerfs in 3.0.2, but I think there are some things we can do to improve on those numbers.
Epat and Weave both did affliction builds (as did I) since it underwent the most changes and it seems like fun and is really OP for world PVE. In raids I'm not so sure. I'd like to suggest the following rotation which I tested on Dr. Boom Tuesday. I noticed this was not being used for Brut:
Corruption
SB..SB..SB..SB
Haunt
SB..SB..SB..SB
Haunt
SB..SB..SB..SB
Haunt
...
This will keep Corruption and Haunt up the whole time. Yes there are a ton of other dots available to us, but SB is still more efficient. I also suggest equipping the BT trinket which has a 20% chance to grant 220 spell power each corruption tick. It ends up being up a LOT.
Destruction underwent the least changes and it's quite possible that it is still the best raid dps spec. I'm curious to see how well a fire specced destruction lock will do since most of the destruction changes went into making that viable. Maybe I'll give that a shot on the beta.

This would be my build. If any of the locks from hamfist try this out please let us know how you dps goes.

That would be my build for 70.

Tankard — Fri, 10/17/2008 - 13:07Last night I spent over an hour working on those target dummies. The best rotation I could come up with for affliction was about 1500dps. So I respecced back to a sacrifice/destruction build. I was able to get 2000dps with that build. It's not going to be viable to raid with a fire spec until level 80 I think since you can't get deep enough into the destruction tree for it without eliminating sacrifice in demonology (which is an extra 12% ish damage between the fel armor and sacrifice).
I feel that mages were pretty
Karli — Fri, 10/17/2008 - 10:14I feel that mages were pretty hard hit in showing (although I expected that) but I was honestly surprised by how, to be blunt, poorly our warlocks did in raid. I can say with certainty that ALL our hamfist warlocks are exceptional players, and have always had a very solid showing on the meters. Blizzard just was really not very kind to you guys at all on this latest patch.
I'm not sure if these things will help you guys, but I noticed a few things that were affecting my own dps that was probably caster generic. First, my crowd control macros (although there isn't much to banish in sunwell) were NOT working to do my standard "left click CC's current target, right click CC's focus", which was slowing me down because I had to manually change targets back and forth and I'm usually a LOT faster.
Next, there was something going on with spell animations for timed casts and not being able to tell the difference between a spell that truly got interrupted and a spell that was going to go off. This happened when I would hit a spell key bind more than once. The animation (on my hands) would disappear, the cast bar would stop/disappear (I use quartz), and then I would have to wait a few seconds to see if the spell was really going to go off or if I had actually interrupted it and needed to cast it again.
Lastly, the stock UI floating Combat Text is not helpful for a ranged caster for a few reasons, so I found myself going back to a buggy version of SCT & SCTD. The stock combat text shows above a target, and when you're ranged it's hard to see those numbers tick if you're far away and the target is particularly large. And in order to see stuff in a dynamic fight, you have to keep screwing around with your camera angle which is super annoying. The stock combat text was also not showing my procs, such as Hot Streak, which is a talent crucial to a fire mage's new spell rotation.
On the PTR I hadn't had too much trouble figuring out when Hot Streak (instant cast Pyroblast) proc'd, because it was always the last graphic that appeared on my buffs below my portrait. One of the new changes I noticed was that buffs are being arranged differently; your own personal buffs are always listed first, and then any raid-wide type buffs follow. So, in a sea of 20+ buffs on my character, all of a sudden instead of just having to look at the last one on the list I had to look at something that changed in position depending on if I had a trinket or ring or something proc. It was frustrating to say the least.
So, I bit the bullet and enabled SCT & SCTD again because it gives me this nice printed proc notification. However, it's buggy because it won't let you open the options menu to change your settings, and currently I'm getting this obnoxious chime sound every few seconds consistently when I'm under 30% HP or mana. Super duper annoying.
Anyways, it's going to take a while to get these kinks worked out, and I really hope to see my dps increase as I get more comfortable. Hopefully mentioning some of these issues will help you fine tune the little things to bump up your dps a bit more.
