WHAT kind of pc should i get?
Kerilyn — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 15:12
ok so im in the market for a new laptop, yes laptop b/c i'll get a dektop later when im done with school. as it is laptops are more convenient for me and my career.
so my old laptop was an acer aspire 3004WLCi its stats are:
Mobile AMD Sempron processor
15.4" WXGA Acer crystalbrite LCD
60GB HDD
DVD/CD-RW combo
512 MB DDR
802.11b/g wireless LAN
Windows XP OS (sp 2 last installed update)
i bought it in 2006 and over the years its needed some repairs, like a new screen and now something else is wrong with it, Ryu says its probably an easy fix but idc, i want something with more space b/c im a packrat with files and photos. Also im not thinking i want to get another acer, but im not married to taht standard yet.
I wanted to ask a general consensus of what type to purchase. if anyones got a laptop they bought and like throw me a link to it on a site or something. I'd like one thats got more space and doesn't overheat badly and doesnt take up alot of physical space.im looking at a low budget but effective pc. max cost of 700$. i r poor broke ass college student.
questions, comments, tips, chicken wings?? (LAWLZ)
any tips would be much appreciated!

Back in the day, one of my friends hosted a quarterly lan party. It was never large, only about 30 people or so, and first prize for winning whatever tournament we had was the privledge of smashing whatever Macintosh Plus he was able to buy on ebay for the cheapest. Good times.

Thats actually a decent, cheap laptop that will play WoW well. Although, for the most part, Id stick with a desktop if possible.
Only thing i dont like is vista home.. just ugh. but im bias i guess.
key features needed...
Kerilyn — Wed, 02/18/2009 - 00:28are portability and LOTS of space. i have a desktop to play wow on so no worries tehre. laptop would be used mainly for keeping up my portfolio and school work, with office on it ans such. maybe making a few AMV's on the side.
Laptops can be great for
Dufe — Wed, 02/18/2009 - 06:42Laptops can be great for exactly that. In that price range and for those purposes, drop the dedicated video, stick with a Core 2 and 2+gb RAM, and otherwise just watch your local Fry's/Bestbuy/Newegg/Dell/HP adds for the best deal. Low end laptops have been commoditized to the point that brand is less of an issue.

garreth — Wed, 02/18/2009 - 04:44You: "Hey Garreth, can you fix my computer, the motherboard blew up."
Me: "Sure, let's just order one off of Newegg and we can switch it right in."
You: "Great! It's a Dell laptop."
Me: "Fuck off, go buy a new laptop, I'm out."

tough call
moriella — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 23:13It's going to be very hard to play wow WELL on a sub 700$ lappy.
A 700$ PC can do the job with ease.
In this lappy price point are machines that will attempt to play games, but not do it very well. Defaulting to low settings and still giving FR issues from time to time.
Choose a processor with a lot
Adwarflol — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 21:46Choose a processor with a lot of L2Cache, it's good stuff <__<
That's entirely dependent on
Dufe — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 22:12That's entirely dependent on the CPU architecture, the other bottlenecks, and the application in question. Shooting for alot of L2 at the expense of other specs or for a processor or app that doesn't benefit from it as much would be unwise.

Dufe — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 19:06Try to stick with an integrated graphics card if you intend to do any "serious" gaming on it. Unfortunately that means ~$800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcatego...
Other than that, 2gb minimum RAM, try to stick with the Core 2 processor.

Slight correction: Windows XP
Dufe — Tue, 02/17/2009 - 19:12Slight correction: Windows XP will only see ~3gb, Vista 64 will see way, way more. And yes, I would recommend Vista 64 over XP.
