Ticked Off and Happy
Fjork — Wed, 04/15/2009 - 20:05
So Microsoft has decided that my version of Windows is hacked and I cannot use anything except OpenSource software currently (including Vent, Wow, Java, etc)
Happy because I've been wanting to convert to unbuntu for months, but I didn't want to take the effort to teach myself, my wife, and my children how to use unbuntu.
I'm pissed because I've never paid for a copy of Windows for my entire life. Until THIS copy, which I paid full price for three years ago at $130.00 because Fry's was out of their OEM copies.
But for some reason, it's hacked and Windows won't let anything run except the OpenSource software (I know, right?)
So I have a cd burner and I'm burning everything I have, and I'll be installing Unbuntu asap. (probably tonight / tommorow night depending on how long it takes to burn everything)
Advice for a new user is always appreciated. :-)

Another blerb about what is
Fjork — Sat, 04/18/2009 - 00:42Another blerb about what is required on ATI cards:
I'll get to what this crap means when I update the posting, but this shouldn't be done until you are 'just' ready to run w0w.
It's not Windows
Fjork — Sat, 04/18/2009 - 01:05It's not Windows about........ I meant Ubuntu. It was 2:30am here, can you blame me?
However.
Project Wow-Buntu is COMPLETE! w00 w00 w00
Still got to play with my Addons, GUI, etc, etc however ewiges and a few others can confirm I managed to get online last night!
And the graphics were AMAZING considering I had EVERYTHING at minimum. Windows does NOT take full advantage of Radeon 3450 at ALL. We'll see just how sweet it gets. Oh. And unlike Windows always did for me, it appears that "Windowed Mode" actually works without hurting your FPS!
Anywayz. Night gang. It's WAY to late for me to make the book page tonight.
Ubuntu + Wine + w0w 3.1
Fjork — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 11:44Suggestions Welcome. This will be a book page as Garreth, myself, Grasen, Aidin, and Delirium are done tearing it apart (and it will look nicer.)
All information provided has been referenced by the following sources and I cannot guarantee is viability (mostly because I have to get home to use it all first....)
In THEORY this SHOULD work. I have been unable to test it yet, but I wanted the steps documented so I didn’t get irritated and forget them tonight.
If you see something wrong, PLEASE post!

This is the Linux x86 and Linux x86_64 Drivers Released 03/24/2009
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14154
This is WineHQ 's World of Warcraft page. Most of the information below will be coming directly from this page.
http://www.wowwiki.com/Wine
Wowwiki's Wine Page
http://www.wowwiki.com/Wine_miscellaneous_info
From there let us begin.
Lower ALL of your World of Warcraft settings to minimum. Archive all AddOns then remove them. Archive all the Patches you have, we might need them. (The usefulness of this comes in later.)
Backup ALL files to burned CD and/or Flash Drive. We are going to attempt to keep all of your Windows Files (including Warcraft), but life isn’t always fair, is it?
Get your copy of Ubuntu. You can download it (along with a iso burner program) straight from http://www.ubuntu.com or if you prefer, you can purchase a cd to be sent to you for a few bucks (the cost of the cd. The software is free.)
Make a copy of your Ubuntu install cd. (Mine was picked up by my toddler and shoved into the fireplace grating. The backup is free (with an “Image Burner”), and good to have.

Do some of this stuff:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Read this if you have already gotten lost:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
Don’t read to long, or you’ll stay lost. I’m walking you through.
BootFromCD
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Here we are actually going to be booting Ubuntu from the CD. You have the option of exploring Ubuntu, or installing it. Let’s install.
Migration Assistant (informational)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows/TransferringFilesAndSettings
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountingWindowsPartitions
You can do that, but I’ll tell you now its possible to setup a dual-boot, in which case all your Windows files will be preserved and Ubuntu will usually show them all in your files.
Install Ubuntu
You will be asked for a username and password. This will be the "root" user. (sudo = root when you are typing in terminal mode)
You should create a secondary account for w0w playing as there are no system protections when you are accessing interwebz programs such as video games, online poker, etc through the root login. This can be done from the Virtual Terminal or the gui
From Gui, Systems->Administrator
From Virtual Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1)
sudo adduser username
Follow prompts.
Update Ubuntu
Currently for 8.10 there are 289 Updates to have installed before you start configuring your machine. DO THIS FIRST.
You will need to be connected to the internet to do this. Picture your “Start Menu” as being on the top instead of the bottom of the page. See the Network Button on the top-right? Configure it.
Check Mozilla FireFox to make sure you have Internet.
If you do, there should be a red and white arrow pointed down next to your network status icon. Click it.
Install all updates.
This can also be done through: System -> Administration -> Update Manager
Installing ATI Video Card Drivers
I cannot offer advice on NON-ATI cards. Mostly, because I don’t have one. Secondly, because the majority of video cards don’t really offer much Linux support (besides Nvidia which offers more than ATI)
System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers
Select “ATI Driver” Should be listed as Proprietary and approved by Ubuntu.
Select “Enable this Driver”.
Reboot system.
Install Wine
http://www.winehq.org/download/deb
Wine is a program for Linux that accurately runs windows-intended programs on Linux operating systems.
Follow the instructions listed under the link explicitly. This will ensure your version of Wine is not only always up to date, but safest.
Wine will now be ‘hidden’ in your files. Because wine installs itself usually under “ $ /usr/local/bin/
Turn off Desk Effects
System->Preferences->
Turn off the “special effects”. Can’t remember where this is right now, but it is under ‘Display’ and the icon looks like a monitor.
Open / Install Warcraft Folder in Wine
If you converted to Ubuntu on a dual-boot (didn’t format) you can actually open the World of Warcraft folder from your previous installation. I hope you did #1. Otherwise w0w is going to throw up all over your screen.
If you didn’t convert, download the Install.exe for Warcraft from Blizzard (6.5 gb) and when it is done, Right-Click on it, and select “Run with Wine”. Find some mirror sites (or archive) for the patches. Same thing for each patch. Right-Click “Run with Wine.” If you do this, you will not have a Config.WTF file, you will instead have a RunOnce.WTF file.
Locate your Config.WTF / RunOnce.WTF File
Application->Wine->Explore C:\ then “Program Files->World of Warcraft->WTF”
Make the following changes:
SET ffxNetherWorld “0”
SET gxAPI “OpenGL”
SET ffxGlow “0”
If any of the previous lines do not exist, CREATE them. All three MUST be in your Config.WTF for w0w to run properly (to start)
Run World of Warcraft
Applications -> Wine -> Folders -> World of Warcraft -> Warcraft Launcher.exe
Login (You should be good from here…..)
(But you might NOT be!)
Watch your guild chat throw up all over your screen!!!!! J
Exit Game. ( /exit )
Now your in 800x600 mode with no graphics! Joy!
So, what do you do? Reboot computer!
Reload drivers.
Oh noes! You just loaded with NO video! It’s all text based!
Do this:
Press: “Ctrl” + “Alt” + “F1” (Opens Virtual Terminal)
Type: aticonfig –initial –f
Hope it works.
Go online and figure out what went wrong because I don’t know yet.
Good luck!
Errors in Loading: From
Fjork — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 20:05Errors in Loading:
From Ubuntu Forums:
If you load into a text-based screen, that IS the virtual terminal. This means your drivers are disrupted, but most likely your updates have not completed. Complete ALL updates BEFORE attempting to install video card drivers (no warning about this throughout Ubuntu instructions....)
Try this:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist -upgrade
sudo reboot
If that fails, next try to re-install the Drivers (for Nvidia):
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-180 nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot
Boy, talk about a crash course in Ubuntu right?
Btw Garreth / Grasen. My video card is a Nvidia GeForce: WinFast PX6200 TC graphics card.
Seriously don't ask me why the driver CD I have for it is ATI Radeon (which is why I've been thinking I have one), but it is.
I don't understand. Do I
Fjork — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 22:02I don't understand. Do I have ATI or Nvidia????
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51G [GeForce 6100] (rev a2)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3450
The onboard maybe.....?
http://hothardware.com/articles/Leadtek-Winfast-PX6200-TC-TDH-256MB/
That's the card.
I keep getting an error on boot of "Low Graphics Mode", or it goes directly to the Terminal Window (despite the fact that GNOME is loaded).
When it goes back to the terminal-mode, I can redo the following to get back into the gui until the next time I restart:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-180 nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot
Once I goto reboot again, I'm screwed.
Read Me First:
Everyone will get a good laugh out of all of the previous frustration (from tonight) when you read the previous after reading what I am about to write.
Ubuntu detected the card make, model, year, etc, etc of the WinFast etc etc I posted previously.
However THAT video card is NOT CURRENTLY installed! It hasn't been since Carno bought me this new monitor in May last year. So Ubuntu found the information for it and went-ahead and set it up. Luckily for me, the ONBOARD video just happens to be a 6x series Nvidia (the reason I had any graphics at all)
So, every time I tried to setup the Nvidia graphics, it keel-hauled.
Now, on to the project I outlined earlier today with my ACTUAL video card:
ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3450
mobility?
moriella — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 22:41is this a laptop? I'm really confused now - the mobility series is a laptop card isnt it?
Supposed to be, but no it
Fjork — Sat, 04/18/2009 - 00:15Supposed to be, but no it isn't a laptop. This was first release I guess. Carno bought it for me when he bought the monitor.
I'll edit the main post in a minute to give full details on what did / didn't happen.
I'm making one final change to my Config.WTF file:
SET gxResolution "1024-768" (aka: insert desired resolution here)
SET gxRefresh "60"
Then I'm going to try and boot w0w!!!!!!
Now. My actual screen resolution is 1400x1050, but I'm not sure quiet yet if Wine-w0w will support it.
Then I will start removing some of my limitors to maximize my graphics.
Hmm, looks like this is a requirement (again, I'll update laterz.....)

I WILL update this once I've fixed this goofy text issue. (My text throws up all over the screen unreadable.)

Prime8 — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 12:21Do the newer builds include "native" NTFS support? I haven't used Ubuntu in a couple of years, but I remember having to jump through some hoops to get NTFS support working.
Argh. You had to ask right
Fjork — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 12:53Argh. You had to ask right after I closed the window.
The simple answer for you is "yes they do", however I will have to research some more on the details for it.
I had the option of leaving my windows install in place and actually accessing ALL of my old programs through Wine (that were supported by Wine) instead of formatting and running a fresh install.
I chose the fresh install in case the douches at Microsoft were full of it and I had a virus not their crappy program.
It's a good start!
garreth — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 12:20It's a good start!

Fjork — Thu, 04/16/2009 - 23:02Graphics are wretched, and w0w messed up my regular monitor graphics when I exited.
What is full screen glow?
On the flip side. Now I'm down to the configuration point.
In Administration -> Hardware
garreth — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 00:49In Administration -> Hardware Drivers are you running any of the branded drivers (nvidia, ati, etc) or the generic default graphics driver?
Also, set WoW to run in Windowed with Full Screen and set its resolution to that which is native to your monitor. DO NOT TURN ON VERTICAL SYNC. Turn down all your graphics at first.
Setup the Recommended ATI
Fjork — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 06:48Setup the Recommended ATI drivers through "Proprietary Software" before doing any of the following.
A) I changed the RunOnce.WTF file, loaded w0w, then exited and changed the Config.WTF file with the SET OpenGL.
B) I changed the options before even logging in / exiting to change the newly created Config.WTF file to minium. (Vertical Sync was off)
C) After I logged into wow, my guild-chat ended up exploding (looked similar to an old windows screensaver) and I exited the game.
D) My video settings were still screwed up.
E) I restarted soon after my post to see if Ubuntu would "fix" itself on at least normal viewing.
F) The vid drivers must have somehow gotten screwed up. The GNOME gui interface would not load and instead would only give me a command-prompt style (old-school linux). I was able to login, but I don't know ANY of the commands to reset the video drivers, etc, etc, etc or even know why the GUI won't load. The 'loading screen' picture was fine. Even under Safe Mode I still got the

You MUST make that Config.wtf
garreth — Fri, 04/17/2009 - 00:53You MUST make that Config.wtf file change before you play WoW or it will try to launch in DirectX mode, not OpenGL. We want OpenGL ;)

The only thing windows would let me use was applications that did not require "Liscencing".
When I called to talk to Microsoft, they offered over and over again to "LET" me register MY pirated copy of windows.
I was holding the receipt from Feb 26, 2006.
I was holding the original case, the original cd, and the original packaging from where it has sat in a box of "needed stuff" since I bought it Feb 26, 2006.
:/
So anywayz. Got Unbuntu downloaded and installed last night. I went ahead and had unbuntu format my hdd just in case the guys at Microsoft were full of it and didn't know what virus I had. It's sad. It took me longer to backup my six-gigs of files to flash drives than to install and setup Unbuntu.
Unfortunately (and you'll all get a laugh out of this one), Unbuntu finished installing and loading at 12:07 a.m. this morning.
Seven minutes after my TimeWarner bill was overdue and they turned off my interwebz! HAHA
So I'll be updating my Unbuntu 8.10 and installing Wine tonight. I already have the install programs for OpenOffice, FireFox 3, Thunderbird 2, and a few others at the ready.
Here's the info on what they used:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/AboutNotifications.aspx?displaylang=en
Minding that I had automatic updates turned off and I never installed this software.
Oh well, there loss.
Time to ride on the Dark Side!
Thanks for all the support ya'll. I was very frustrated last night to be forced into this conversion earlier than I had planned. Ya'll know I've been thinking about converting and learning everything I can about Unbuntu, but I just wasn't READY yet! :p
WGA is a bunch of shit
Agoney — Thu, 04/16/2009 - 10:03WGA is a bunch of shit really.. It can report false-piracies and the only way to fix it is to repurchase your copy of windows..
If you decide to keep or load windows onto another HD, and it fails WGA again, there are ways around this. I won't post them out in the open though.

Thanks for the empathy! hehe.
But naw. I'm going to force my wife and children to learn how to use Ubuntu. I'm friggin tired of the 400 'background' programs Windows runs, the system checks, the "You are NOT protected." bubbles constantly, etc etc etc.
I'm officially done with Microsoft. I will never purchase another Microsoft product.

windows piracy huh???
moriella — Wed, 04/15/2009 - 22:27I have never heard of windows validation operating in this way. Ive googled it, and still cant find anything. Im guessing this is not due to windows, esp if you paid for an retail version of this windows you are using...
I have found some references on the net the Comodo Personal Firewall is causing some very similar issues after its last update on april 9-10. Could this be the issue?
