Frost... DPS.... in a 25 man¿?

Alprazalam — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 18:43

In ur spec section, you stated," I understand that Frost is the way to go at the moment as far as DPS output..."  Trying to figure out if that was a typo.  Frost is an extremely low DPS spec.

Maybe you meant frostfire¿?  Frostfire is kind of going outdated as well unless you have like a 5-6 minute fight, and mana would be an issue if you were TTW/FB spec.

Other then the spec and no grid, I don't see a problem with your app.  (get grid)

FFB

Serbitar — Tue, 05/05/2009 - 05:50

Aye, I meant FFB, apologies. I've been learning a bunch about mages from several resources since I started leveling him about a month ago and mistyped :-)

I've been running around as frost as I level; should I be? It seems like it's worked out ok, but if there's a more efficient spec for solo questing that would be great.

Just get the whole raid pack.

Torvo — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 14:12

You'll need it sooner or later anyway. And seriously consider switching from DBM to Big Wigs... You'll find that Big Wigs is lower overhead on your memory and provides equivalent value. It's our encounter add-on of choice.

Many of us have alts of all levels that we're bringing up, and many more of us are achievement whores who haven't cleared some of the pre-expac content, so /join dfrecruit and don't be afraid to check if anyone's interested in running some content with you while you level.

I like your app -- you seem like you'd fit in well here (at least on a personality level). Because of that, I'll share a few tips with you based on my observations of what's worked for the people who have recently apped and gotten in:

  • Personality's only a small part of it... Making yourself valuable in-game is where you'll need to shine.
  • You face an uphill battle as a pure DPS class... Since that's all your class can do, you'll need to do it VERY well to earn your spot. Settle for nothing less than excellence.
  • Theorycraft. Be open to spec optimization, changing your spell rotation, etc. Seek out input from the top mages in the guild. That you reference Elitist Jerks has you off to a very good head start there.
  • Patience is a virtue. You mentioned you don't mind waiting until you can prove your value, but put your money where your mouth is. We've had determined guild apps on the list for as long as... what, 8 months with Noid? That's an extreme case, but it was all about steady improvement and proving he wanted to be here. It's all about persistence.
  • Most importantly: Be proactive. Sign up for events, even if it's just as an alternate. Actively join discussions on this site - share your knowledge of the classes you've run through end-game content. Be in dfrecruit whenever you're online and ask us in there any time you want to run some group content (instances, group quests, world events, achievement farming, etc). Hop into our vent channel to say hi - but respect the sanctity of raids and don't intrude. You control your own fortunes, and it's up to you to find opportunities to audition for as many people as possible.

Thank you

Thanks Torvo for the kind words. I'll certainly take your advice to heart.

Get Grid and the Grid addon

garreth — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:24

Get Grid and the Grid addon called "GridRaidStatusDebuff" (both included in the guild pack) for the following reasons as a mage:

  • Someone has been mind controlled.  You need to sheep them.  Who are they?  Are they in range?
  • Someone has a raid-wiping debuff that you need to get the hell away from.  Are they close to you?
  • Someone has a curse you can cleanse.  You already have your mouseover cleanse macro (right?), who do you need to mouseover to cleanse and are they close enough to you?
  • The entire raid just took MASSIVE aoe damage.  You are not a priority heal target.  Using the instant visualization of a raid taking 15k damage, maybe it's time to stop and bandage/stone/pot so than you're topped off before the next wave of damage if the chain heals don't make it to you in time.
  • The tank died.  Did you know?
  • The offtank holding all the adds that you're currently aoe'ing died.  Did you know in time to iceblock before you get smushed?
  • Which other mage is alive within range to pick up the sheep on your target after you got smushed?

Grid is an instant raid awareness tool.  Our tanks use it to taunt off raiders and to Intervene as well.  Our dps uses it to get an instant picture of how the raid is doing and to be informed of various fight mechanics that affect everyone.

Grid (again)

Serbitar — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:31

Pedran told me that Downfall loved some Grid.

Yes, I have Grid and I have experience using it as a healer. It's just not loaded on the mage, and therefore not on the UI.

Garreth said it much much

jaibyrd — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:46

Garreth said it much much more eloquently than I did. :-) try grid on your mage.

Will Do

Serbitar — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:51

Will do. It's important to get familiar with its functionality as a DPS. I'll make sure it's in use as I push to 80.

Thanks :-D

5) I play this game for the

jaibyrd — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 12:43

5) I play this game for the social aspect, but I must emphasize maturity: You're never going to have me spamming meters, clogging vent up with jibber jabber, yelling for people to heal me, or making guild chat look like Barrens chat.

O dear...I fear he's never seen Downfall chat.  :-)

And for the love of God...get GRID if you are healing ok?

 please?

go look at the df addon packet...and just dooo eett.

Also for my only real question: why are you switching from horde to alliance?

Torvo's picture

HA!

Torvo — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:50

Jai, you read my mind.

Case in point: My current guild note is "has a cat that poops like a human". I'd put it in the middle rung of maturity compared to some of the others.

To clarify, though, we have our immature fun - BOOBIES! - but we know when it's time to shut that off and focus on being all businesslike. During easy trash mobs we might chat a bit of OT in vent, but I've yet to be in a Downfall raid where it's considered commonplace (or even tolerated) to tell a story about your bodily functions during boss fights. On a related note, you won't want to raid with Nerf Jesu.

Awesome

Serbitar — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:59

Sounds good to me. I'm not going to be that guy who's like WOW IS SRS BSNS. Downfall is old school - I have no doubts that you guys know when it's time to get it done and when it's time to talk about udders :-P

Serbitar's picture

Why I Switched

Serbitar — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 12:54

Couple of reasons I switched: First, Pedran leveled a hordie toon for me once so we could play, then he came alliance, so I figured I owed it to him to do the same. Second, I've leveled four toons through horde content and couldn't bring myself to do it again. Third, In my opinion Alliance content is much more fleshed out and compelling, so I wanted to see all of it.

As for Grid: I used it as a healer, but I have it disabled on the mage atm since I'm not healing (obviously) or instancing much yet.

Pedran got the answer to the question... I need new material >.<

jaibyrd — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 13:07

Fjork — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 12:35

"How many mages does it take to change a lightbulb?"

None.  Then the Warlocks would have nothing to do since the nerf..........

Seriously though, Serb is an RL friend of mine who I've been preaching the awesomeness of DF to since I joined.  And HE actually raids consistantly........   ^_^

g/l Serb.
