Our own writings?
Vitriola — Fri, 05/15/2009 - 07:56This may be an odd thing to ask, but with so many voracious readers, is there a place where we can post our own fiction for others to read?
Post a blog.
Atar — Fri, 05/15/2009 - 08:00Post a blog.
i love how every book he has
Grasen — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 23:52i love how every book he has ever written plays back to that series in some form or fassion
Have you read Lise's Story
jaibyrd — Fri, 05/15/2009 - 06:48Have you read Lise's Story yet? Not really from DT but its the one that I've liked the best since then.
Since we have moved to books
Grasen — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 15:53Since we have moved to books i will say Stephen King is the best novelist of all time.
Before you tell me i am wrong, ask yourself this, Did you read The Dark Tower series? If you didnt then you cant even begin to know the extent of his greatness.
Grasen you hit the nail on
jaibyrd — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 22:44Grasen you hit the nail on the head. He is one of my favorite storytellers, and the Dark Tower series was and still is the first books I recommend to anyone. Absolutely fantastic!! And he took so long, I was getting ready to drive down there and force him to write the 3rd one. lol. It was agony waiting for him to finish the next one every single book in the series. Then he had that accident and I thought he'd never finish them. I was QUITE glad he did.
Dada chuck dada dum still freaks me out!!
This might sound a little
Karli — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 16:51This might sound a little odd, but I think Stephen King is a poor writer. That being said, however, I need to add that I own close to every single book he's ever written, and have read many of the books more than once.
To me Stephen King has some expected writing annoyances (he tends to ramble so far off into tangents that he'll lose you, for one), but it's almost comforting after reading so many of his books. It's like listening to my grandpa tell a story. I know when I go visit him he's going to use a certain style that may not be the most poetic, but it's his, and I like it.
Anyways, I do agree that the Dark Tower series is phenomenal. Did you know there is finally legitimate talk to turn it in to a movie? I guess there have been various roadblocks over the years, but it's something I am rooting for to translate well in to film. JJ Abrams (Lost, the new Star Trek) is supposedly attached to the film.
A lot of his novels have done very poorly as movies. Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile are a few noteworthy exceptions.
Stephen King is good but
cromi — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 16:28Stephen King is good but from my experience with writers. Tim O'Brien is one of the best skilled writers that i have read in a very long time.
I loved all of Dan Brown's
Karli — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 09:57I loved all of Dan Brown's books (even if they get a bit formulaic), but was kind of iffy on the movie of The Da Vinci Code. I still really want to see Angels and Demons though. I'm really stoked about Harry Potter too! Although on a side note; ever since I had my son I have STILL been struggling to finish the 4th book. I started it a month before my son was born, and usually can't stay awake for more than a few pages. I finished the other 3 books in a few days, and my son is 6 months old now....
I read a few of his books
Prime8 — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 10:07I read a few of his books when I was a lab assistant. The bookshelf in the teacher's lounge had a limited selection, I didn't enjoy any of them. There's just something about his writing style I don't dig.
Not excited about Harry Potter movies anymore
Vitriola — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 09:00I have read the Harry Potter books several times and am listening to an audio version at work. (The days go by FAST like this!) However, the movies leave out more and more of what was in the book and, by the time that Dolores Umbridge was throwing her weight around, they were changing the story to become outright untenable.
1. In the movie Dolores had Cho Chang tell about the secret DA society under veritas serum. Actually, Snape did not give her real veritas serum and the traitor was caught in hermione's curse. Cho, who is a good one, never betrayed anyone.
2. In the movie Dolores blasted open the door to the room of requirement. Actually, they just caught Harry trying to get away when they heard that they were discovered. (Dobby told them.) The problem with the movie version is that the room is needed as a hideout in the last book. If it is something that can be found and blasted open, then it is not secure enough to be a hideout. Also, in the books, Dolores did very little magic. In the movie, she did a good deal.
3. In the movie Fred and George were not nearly as cool as they were in the books. Their exploits were greatly truncated and the swamp that they made, and which Dolores could not remove, had a bit of it left when professor Flitwick removed it. (He thought that it was excellent magic and wanted a memorial to it.)
4. They do not get the charachters right even in simple matters. Fleur is suppsed to have silvery white hair, as do all of her species. The movies gave her brown hair. Ginny Weasley is supposed to have flaming red hair. The movies have her hair brown. Even Fudge is not given his lime green bowler to wear. Sloppy! And where is peeves?
5. In the goblet of fire, nevelle gives Harry the gilly weed to breathe underwater. Actually it was Dobby that did that part.
These may seem like little things but each has its point. There was no reason to change it as they did and the overall effect is changed significantly. The books present a wonderful story of mysteries within mysteries. There is war, politics, terror tactics, underground resistance, desperate gambles, the uncertainty that comes with command decisions, dealing with propoganda, etc, etc. The way that it is handled in the books is brilliant. The way it is handled in the movies is incfreasingly insipid.
I will probably watch the movie eventually but I am in no hurry to get away from the books themselves.
fwiw & imho
and watch for 6. Cardiac
Lunchbox — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 09:03and watch for 6. Cardiac Arrest kills Dumbledore O_o
Albus dying of a heart attack?
Vitriola — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 12:21Please tell me that you are kidding! if so, then it will end up as terrible a rewrite as Lord of the rings was all the way through.
I'm gonna have to disagree
Dragon — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 12:25I'm gonna have to disagree with you about LotR.
Except for the last 30 minutes of Return of the King when you kept wondering if it was ever going to end, I felt that Peter Jackson ended up being the Editor that Tolkien both never had and desperately needed.
The books are good but that is one instance where I felt that the movies did great justice for the book.
lotr
Vitriola — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 12:42lotr had every sub plot changed for the worse. Some major points were also changed and for the worse. It goes far beyond things like Tom Bombadil being removed entirely, Saruman dying at Isengaard or the hobbits not having to fight to free their homeland at the end. The list is far too lengthy to be of interest to people here in general but it was unrecognizable as Tolkien to my eyes.
Would that they were not doing that to Harry Potter, though at this rate, the actors will be in their 30s and still trying to play a teenager.
Ya Lotr. QQ time about my
cromi — Thu, 05/14/2009 - 14:49Ya Lotr. QQ time about my unliked plot points. The sword was with Aragorn when he left the elves not given at the last minute and eowyn was never going to leave she had made the choice long before.
The Elves did not come to fight with them at the keep in the 2nd movie. They came after with the banner of the kings of the north and they were not elves besides the 3 sons, they were with the rangers.
I would go into more points but this list would be much much longer. It was a great movie but i did not like some of the things done in it and when i watch it i have to try and mentally block out the bad parts.

I'm torn between HP6 and
pulga — Tue, 05/12/2009 - 08:27I'm torn between HP6 and Michael Bay Presents: Robots and Explosions 2. I'm not a huge fan of the books (read 1-4) but I've seen every movie. Me and my best friend saw the past two at midnight release, and plan to do the same for this one. I loved the first Transformers, partially because it was a good hour and a half of Meghan Fox on screen, partially because I loved the transformers as a kid, and supposedly theyre going to pay more attention to the robots this time. On the pole I went with Harry Potter, but Transformers came in close 2nd.
For shame ever. How could
Lunchbox — Tue, 05/12/2009 - 08:12For shame ever. How could you neglect Star Wars. Technically its a summer movie and there might be some who havent but should see this movie. FOR SHAME!!!!

cromi — Tue, 05/12/2009 - 08:23Ok for about 10 years i was a huge Harry Potter fan. And then the last book came out and it was good for me. I hate to be a guy that says as jim gaffigan "the book was much better than the movie" well the movie distracts from most of the points and reading intuitively it just doesnt hit the right spots. They put movie 7 into 2 parts when the movie that should have been split into 2 parts content wise was part 4.
What Harry Potter hasn't
cromi — Tue, 05/12/2009 - 08:10What Harry Potter hasn't been good since the 2nd movie. The third was alright, the fourth just was not good, and I didn't even bother seeing the 5th. To tell you the truth i kind of died a little inside when I saw the fourth.
