"LoL @ Dangly" -Tales of a Wayward Shift Clicker-
Dangly — Tue, 05/19/2009 - 10:34
I often get asked "What happened with you and Downfall?". My reply usually varies, depending on how much time I want to spend explaining. In the Downfall community, I think there is a great "rift" between those that know "of" me and those that "really" know me. On the contrary, if you leave the Downfall community, you will find a community of people who have grown to love and respect me. Why is there such a difference of opinion about me? Well, in a nutshell, it's mostly my inexperience in dealing with RL issues that were placed before me at a time in my life when I thought the world should be revolving around me. That's the two minute version, but it doesn't even cut the ice or begin to explain much of anything. Since there is a great deal of history here, bear with me as I begin telling you the story of Dangly, or better "My Story".
Over the course of my WoW experience (about 5 years), I have visited only three servers. I started out on Agamaggan as a Nelf Warrior (don't laugh), and played with my brother until I grew bored with the warrior mechanics. It was then that I created Dangly, and continued to level him up to 80 and began to heal for <Underoath> as they progressed through Molten Core and eventually Blackwing Lair. They eventually made me an officer, but one day our GM decided that he needed to quit wow to focus on his wife and kids. I understood that and so did everyone else. However, the guild ended up disbanding and we were all left guildless on a dying server. I then applied to <Onslaught> ( the only guild worth a damn on Agamaggan at the time ) and they accepted me after a "proving run" and we raided for a few weeks. However, they eventually all xferred to other servers due to Agamaggan's lack of competent players.
I was not going to follow them. Instead, I began searching the web for a good guild. I came across downfallguild.org and I was immediately drawn to the level of community and organization that oozed from the pages. After a few talks with Garreth and some other officers, they decided to invite me to xfer over for a proving run. After a test run or two, I was offered a ginvite and a perma spot in Hamfist as a healer. At the time, I didn't realize what an honor this was, but apparently most people have to wait a while before receiving an invite to the main raid. I had really hit it off with Downfall and I felt like I finally had a home.
Things went amazing for a while, but then life started to rear its ugly face. The girl I was dating at the time ( who is now my wife ) was struggling through depression, anxiety, and OCD. She kept it bottled in for so long, that it finally surfaced in a terrible way. I always knew that she suffered from these problems, but up until that point, she had it under control as far as I knew. This directly and negatively affected our relationship because I wasn't ready to deal with it. I had to learn and cope "on-the-fly". WoW had been a big part of my life for a long time before this happened, and I was starting to realize that I would have to let it go for the sake of our relationship.
This realization ultimately led to my own "downfall". I couldn't spend my free time playing the game that I love anymore, and I was angry. One night after what should have been a routine Vashj push, I decided to disenchant all of my gear and sell the shards off on the AH. I also deleted Dangly, but quickly realized that I had gone too far and at least got him back. However, there was no way I could predict the aftermath that would follow the next day.
I logged on the next day and told Garreth what I had done, and that I was quitting wow. I was very short with him. However, once people started to realize what was going on (since I wasn't in the raid anymore, it was obvious), I received lashings and brow-beatings from almost everyone (minus a few). In the volatile and adolescent state that I was in at the time, I barked back and said hateful things and began digging myself an endless hole that would soon become my place of residence. To make matters worse, they thought I was a thief because of all the shards I had posted on the AH. Earlier that week I requested shards from the gbank to enchant my gear. I was swiftly kicked from the guild after I went off on a few people.
I didn't much care that I had been kicked, nor did I care that I had been an ass. I was too selfish to realize the error of my ways. While they said hateful things too, that gave me no excuse to retaliate like I did. It all boils down to the problems I was having with my wife. I'm not trying to make excuses, but I do want you guys to know where I'm coming from. I don't normally talk about this stuff with anyone, but I feel like it's worth it, if it clears my name just a little. Dealing with those issues was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I never knew what to expect or when it would end. The only ting I was certain of was that I loved her and it was my job to help her.
I didn't play wow for the better part of a year after that, and things got better and we got help and worked it out. We got engaged, and I decided it was time to log back in. It was then that I met this awesome group of people called the <Red Panda Brigade>. They took me in and quickly promoted me to officer in a matter of weeks. I went on to build their website and we had excellent times running kara and naxx. However, there was a bit of drama in the guild (not caused by me) that caused it to slowly start breaking apart. The guild master had some real life issues to deal with and I finally threw in the towel and moved to Dawnbringer server to play with some RL friends ( college buddies of mine). I hated it, and as soon as my month was up, I quickly xferred back to Gorgonnash.
Since then I've been trying to get back into Downfall. You guys have my deepest apologies for the way I acted. I've definitely become a better man and a better husband through all of this. I just thought you might understand me if you knew my "whole" story. I know its long, but I don't normally wear my heart out on my sleeve, so thanks for taking the time to read it.
Ben (a.k.a. Dangly)

I remember talking to you
Vulk — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 09:06I remember talking to you alot and liking you before the mental explosion and the drama that ensued afterward. Its good to know that that was sparked by some heavy mental stress in your personal life and not your typical behavior. I think we can all attest to atleast one moment in our lives where we went way overboard and shouldn't have. It's also good to hear that that rough time has passed and you are now happily maried. :)
I say we get him in and give him his second chance. He is, and was, very active on the site and very courteous to all downies. Additionally, the fact that he is asking for forgiveness, even after all this time, truely shows that he is sorry
I'm with Vulk...let's give
Aidin — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 11:22I'm with Vulk...let's give him another shot. We've given second chances to ppl who haven't put in as much effort as lol@dangly has.
His actions prove to me he is truly sorry, and understands what a great thing we have here. Most people would have given up by now, and chosen the brow beating of Blood Faith guild chat instead of the grudges he's been withstanding here in Downfall.
You have much respect from me for sharing your story Dangly. Mental illness is a very serious issue, and while depression is the lower end of the spectrum...it's still alot of pressure and stress to deal with. I commend you for sticking by your girl and helping her through it, and making her your wife. Crazy ppl need love too!!! (just kidding lol@dangly..I have a family history of looney toney...lol)
I vote GInvite!!!!
Voice of Reason
Dangly — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 09:26I remember liking you too Vulk. I remember you trying to presuade me to shutup and stop digging myself a hole, but I didn't listen back then. Thanks for trying to be my voice of reason anyway, and thanks for taking the time to read my wall of text.
Wow Dangly, being one of the
jaibyrd — Tue, 05/19/2009 - 19:13Wow Dangly, being one of the people who knew nothing of your life with DF and just meeting you for the first time on vent last night, your story is sobering. I'm quite glad you chose to support the woman you knew and loved in real life regardless of what idiotic behaviour you did in your frustrationg and anger; because she is the one in your life. That was a good choice. I really hope you have grown as much as you say you have because that's a really major step of adulthood, well done.
I liked knowing the story because I dont like inuendo very much.
Happily Married
Dangly — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 08:29Yep...We just had our one year anniversary about 10 days ago. It's been a great year. Thanks for reading my story jaibyrd.
Apology accepted. Thank you
garreth — Tue, 05/19/2009 - 15:55Apology accepted. Thank you for the explanation. I'd encourage the others to read this. The majority of Downies that leave wind up trying to come back. It's a big in joke with us. However, not all put in the effort to explain their circumstances. I appreciate this.
Thank You
Dangly — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 08:26Well I know there are a bunch of people in DF that have the wrong impression about me. Sure, the fact still remains that I made some hilariously bad decisions. However, I thought this might shed some light on my situation. I also know there are a large number of Downies that don't even know why they say "LoL @ Dangly". Now that I've laid it all out there, I think I can wholeheartedly accept whatever decision you make on my behalf. Thanks for accepting my apology G.
stupid things done
moriella — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 10:08It happens Dangly. I think most every guy can say that at least ONCE in his life, he's done something totally f'd up because of a woman.
I'm glad you and your new wife got counseling and are working thru your problem, however I've the following concern after another post you made in a different thread today.
You signed up for a raid and have now withdrawn your status to 'tenative' - based on if your wife goes out for the day.
Is your 'wow contract' with your wife (and we must ultimatly keep them happy) such that your play time is limited to only when it doesnt interfere with her/her life/her need for attention? Right now, we desperatly need good healers who can make most all raids. Having a healer who has to bow out of raid at the last minute because his wife changed her plans/is pmsing/needs attention/missed her prozac dose really isnt what we need.
If you are getting counseling and your 'playtime contract' is negotiated in such a way that you are subject to these type things, then we probably dont need you.
Please, if you are working on your relationship with your wife and just now starting to ease WoW back into your life dont jump off and make this sort of comittment. What you have done to keep your relationship together is commendable, but dont bite off more than you can chew, maybe it's still too early.
I dont want to see you put in a position where you are brought in as a regular raider and then your relationship start to deteroiate because you feel a responsibility to the guild. This sort of situation will not be a win-win for you, your wife, or the guild and the second time around could prove to be even more volatile than the first blow up was.
Consider the steps you are taking. Is it too much, too fast? Could you accept a 4 night/week raid invite and show up with your head clear every night without worrying about building wife aggro?
I was raiding with hamfist as all this happened but had connection issues as the time and wasnt present for most of the drama. I wish you the best in your marriage and continued happiness, but please - check the depth of the water in the pool before you dive in
That's a good question and
Dangly — Thu, 05/21/2009 - 11:29That's a good question and I appreciate your concern. I'll answer it as best I can. Saturday has never been a good day for me to raid. The only reason I've been signing up for the !!1 raids is that I've been available for the past couple Saturdays. I normally take the weekend to spend with friends/family. Up until yesterday, I thought my wife was going to Nashville for a bachlorette party, but she may not be going now. If she goes, then I'll be here. If she stays, then we'll probably do something for Memorial Day on Saturday. It doesn't have anything to do with her need/want for attention. That's just the way it is when you're married. If you are married (by your comments, I assume you are), then maybe you understand what I mean.
After this week, I probably won't be signing up for the Saturday raids anymore since I've been running with Salmon and I would be saved to their raid. I have, however, committed to Sundays with Raid:NOS since Garreth asked me to be a regular in that raid.
As far as my raid availability goes, I can do three (possibly four) nights a week with no problem. My availability doesn't really have anything to do with my wife. My wife and I are fine and she has no problem with me raiding. It has more to do with my softball schedule. I'm in a tournament right now and it's almost over (if we lose tonight, then we're done), but starting at the end of June, I'll be playing summer softball on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Other than that, I'm available. Keep in mind that the softball thing is only temporary, so I don't think my invite should be based on that. However, if you want to base it on that, then it's your call. I just want to be honest with you guys.
If there is one thing that is true about me, it's the fact that I show up when I sign up, and I will always let you know in advance if there is a schedule conflict. I hope you don't consider my post in the !!1 thread "last minute".
