Open Office 3.1. What can it do/not do

Ok, some of you know what my job is and some don't. I work for a small private company that represents Verizon. We are changing and upgrading right near everything we do/have to stay competitive.
One of my jobs is to find new ways to do things. Im looking to use Open Office 3.1 as opposed to buying Microsoft Office.
One of the concerns brought up by some were would it be cross compatible with Microsoft Office. I.E. a Vendor sends me something in Excel, could i open it in Open Office?
I know we have some brilliant minds here in Downfall, So all you Open Office nerds give me what you got. :D
Thanks.

Just make sure when you are
Fjork — Sat, 08/08/2009 - 22:38Just make sure when you are 'saving' your documents that you actually click the 'Save As' drop down and choose 'Word / Excel / etc' formatting.
OpenOffice default doesn't save in Microsoft format.
The only other issue I have yet to meet anyone that has experienced and it has to do with HEAVY duty Excel use (Pivot Tables, Projectional Graphing, in-line creative macros). Excel and its OpenOffice sister don't use the same code to enter alot of the more in-depth formulas.
Also, there are a number of in-depth formulas that OpenOffice didn't recognize. However, these two issues were over a year ago and I haven't looked since 3.1 updated.
I think he is talking about
Knoppix (not verified) — Sun, 08/09/2009 - 00:29I think he is talking about Microsoft Office to Open Office, but I am sure it is just as imoprtant going the opposite direction. Here is a link they may have made more headway between 3.0 to 3.1 but this is about all I could find.

With Windows 7 coming the new
Knoppix (not verified) — Fri, 08/07/2009 - 10:05With Windows 7 coming the new Notpad or Wordpad will convert this back and forth for you, at least it's in the RC I have atm.
Or if you are a small business and meet the criteria:
http://www.microsoft.com/bizspark/
Developing software?
Privately held?
Less than 3 years old?
Making less than US $1 million anually?
This program gives you ALL Microsoft software for free, 3 years or until you make more than $1 million anually.
The new Microsoft Office 2007 formats are very very different, they are more like a queryable XML format (OpenXML) and thus far cannot be converted by anyone other than Microsoft to my knowledge. Or another option is that ask them to send you the files in an older format (Office 2000, 2003 which all Office programs have the option of doing so) and OpenOffice can open those easily, granted they are not embedded with VB macros.
I've been using openoffice
Ewiges — Sat, 08/08/2009 - 12:23I've been using openoffice for years now. It is compatable with almost every word processor, office program. I use it to type my college reports, slideshows for presentations, and spreadsheats for whatever. Its compatable so I can also take it to school and use it on microsoft office.
Now in the pretty details, I'm sure there are specifics in which it can not do. I do not know those specifics.
