New Dog, down to three choices!
Ewiges — Tue, 08/11/2009 - 21:32
So it comes that time that every man needs a new friend. When I was 5 years old, my family got a German Shepard and he passed away 13 years later. Now four years after that my parents are thinking about getting a new dog. Our last dog was so obedient and loyal my dad never wanted another dog for awhile. Before my life, my dad has an Australian Shepard but he was really aggressive with strangers.
Now we have it down to three choices as even my mom wants a new dog now. My dad works evenings and my mom is home by herself most nights so we are after a large breed to watch the house. I will be moving out within a year, so it has to be a dog that doesn't need 24/7 attention. It will get groomed often and daily walks/jogs.
German Shepard - Our last German Shepard was amazing to the point where even other people say he is the coolest dog ever. http://www.akc.org/breeds/german_shepherd_dog/
Labrador - My grade school best friend had a black lab, and they are just the friendliest dogs. They are also ranked as the easiest dog to train. Plus they come in choice of color (yellow please) http://www.akc.org/breeds/labrador_retriever/
Boxer - My dad wants a boxer for some reason. I think they're ugly dog, by they are also rated as being smart (not as smart as the last two though). Problem is, they can be stubborn sometimes and hard to train. http://www.akc.org/breeds/boxer/index.cfm
Let me know what you guys think. Of course a lot of it will probably depend on who knows someone that is breeding. My brother's neighbor just had Boxer puppies so that is the top choice right now. My other brother has a 8 month old German Shepard so I'd rather not want a German Shepard. Myself, I'm leaning toward a Yellow Lab so I can take him to the lake, though the other 2 are also great swimmers, Labs are known for being swimmers.

Saja — Fri, 08/14/2009 - 12:03I would also go for the Shepherd. I think they are more consistant. I've had 4 labs growing up, and they went from extremely crazy excitable and energitic to calm, quiet and dosile. They also develop hip problems, sometimes quite early.
They are unfortuantely
Dragon — Fri, 08/14/2009 - 12:15They are unfortuantely notorious for hip problems. I can't make any real comments here as the last Pure German Sheppard I has was when I was like 2 years old.
I would go German Sheppard.
Olorien — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 10:48I would go German Sheppard. They are loyal as hell and very good as a guard dog. We had one form when I was 8 until I was 20, and no one would get near our house without us knowing. Plus they are fun, friendly, and a great member of the family, but you already know that.
I would stay away from the lab though. They are easy to train but dumb as hell and will not guard the house. If someone comes around you don't want they probably would just lick them and rollover for a belly scratch.
Hair lots of hair. We only
Aidin — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 10:55Hair lots of hair. We only do short haired dogs, cause the long hairs shed...ALOT and some require excessive grooming. A boxer will still shed, but no where near the amounts as a long haired dog. (just something to think about when making your choice)
You're right on that aidin. I
Ewiges — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 12:28You're right on that aidin. I want a pale yellow lab because they are the most adorable thing in the world. But my dad doesn't want one because they shed. Shepards shed too and that may be the reason for them too. Since it will be his dog, he is the final choice maker unless I just come home one day and say "look, a puppy"
I'm tellin ya...the elvis lip

he was real protective of the women to, aidin and our daughter, he didnt even like it when i tickled em. Good dog if you want a naturally loyal one
Gotta agree with Aidin and
Agoney — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 07:39Gotta agree with Aidin and Grasen.. Boxer's are the best, imo, esp if you can find a boxer/pit mix. They are awesome dogs and have great temperment. Only thing i have to say is if you don't plan on running your dog a lot, dont get a boxer. They require a lot of attention and are full of energy. That said, they're very loyal and great around kids.

Aidin — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 07:02Shavo (our boxer which had been with me and my daughter longer then grasen and our son) was the single greatest dog ever. He was beyond simple to train, he was house broken in less then 2 weeks. I crate trained him. He knew simple ppl words like Upstairs, Downstairs, go get water, IN THE BOX!, and all sorts of other non-standard dog commands.
He barked like a big mean guard dog, but cuddled with his people like a big baby. They do have a face only a mother can love, but the elvis lip grows on you!
