Actually, as I was telling

Fjork — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 18:44

Actually, as I was telling Kaluu earlier, I've been doing some research on alternative power sources for a while now.

I found this one a while back, but after some research the average component set of it gives you roughly $25.00 per watt-hour.  Is is "cheap" to build, but only yields from a single unit enough electricity to power a couple 40 watt light bulbs.

A more sound fiscal investment would be a full solar-paneling system.  Because of the gov't 30% immediate return, it's actually possible (if you do it yourself) to purchase and install a full solar panel system in your home for roughly $250.00 a month (5 year loan at 18%), which counts "maximum" usage so you never fall back on the grid.

But because you are still connected to the grid, with the extra $1000.00 unit (which most loans of the sort require), you can actually use the inverter to "fuel" the electric grid and the power company will pay YOU when you produce more electricity than you use.

The best (for the price / warranty) systems I've found thus far are from GE (on grid) and Sharp (off-grid).  The Sharp system is much more expensive, and less reliable.  Also, you HAVE to have LOTS of battery backups or you'll be wasting energy.

With the proper battery backups ($130.00 a battery) and enough sunny days (I live in Texas) I would never use Grid-Power, but make around $50.00 a month from them to defray some of the $250.00 loan cost.

The tesla-coil HAS been reinvented with the tesla-core system, but it's VERY expensive and for the most part only used in VERY large production plants.

For residential purposes go solar, or if you have the land, wind.

Be sure to check with your house-nazis... I mean HoA before any construction however.

Again it holds true

Ybloc — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 17:34

I've always thought this first about the chuch then about governments. Though all of human history one of the most visable but ignored human flaws is that we promote ignorance. Humans do this by controling information. Influence and violence is how humans use to promote this. I don't think it matters who is able because like I lsaid before they are human.

Here somthing simliar to the discussion. Who killed the electric car?

I had the opertunity to watch this on the history channel i think a year or so back. i would suggest looking into it. Btw the site you link seems like a gimic but if what it say is true then ......all i can do is hope. They should have an explaination on how it Literally works.

Prime8 — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 11:11

Chain heal is the only working perpetual motion device that I know of that actually works, and that's only since the release of 3.2.

I never said anything about

Ewiges — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 12:52

I never said anything about it working.

What I did say is there are free energy sources, rather natural energies that we have learned to harvest. I also stated that while now teslas may not have a use, they may in the future. For some reason the government is always giving grant money to crazy college scientists to come up with numbers, I guess so I don't have to.

Dufe's picture

Garreth wasn't asking you to

Dufe — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 13:05

Garreth wasn't asking you to generate the numbers yourself.  He was asking for a reference to or quote of such numbers from these "crazy college scientists."  For anyone who doesn't understand the difference, good luck with not getting nailed for either plagiarism or falsification in college

Ewiges's picture

I believe this thread also

Ewiges — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 13:20

I believe this thread also already stated these numbers don't exist yet right? I don't know if I went off topic or not, but don't badger me for a side I was not on. Then again, its the civilians that suffer the casualties of war.

"The numbers don't exist

Dufe — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 15:33

"The numbers don't exist yet."  Someone created the most amazing, physics defying device known to man without doing a shred of math.  I'm speechless.

Shihli's picture

You are operating under the

Shihli — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 13:53

You are operating under the same assumption as Vitriola was earlier, regarding "free energy".

Free energy does not mean "we don't have to do anything to get it started ourselves" - e.g. wind, water, solar energy, etc.

Free energy, from the scientific definition, is "energy that is created from nothingness".

Solar energy is NOT FREE - you must convert lightwaves (pre-existing energy) into electricity, which is in turn converted into mechanical energy for such uses as powering your car, house, etc.  Along the way, ENERGY IS LOST due to friction (moving parts, etc) or waste energy (heat generated by operation).  Therefore, there is NEVER a 100% conversion of solar energy into usable energy.

Wind energy is NOT FREE - it must be converted from kinetic energy (moving particles in the air) into mechanical energy, and along the way there is wasted energy in the form of heat and friction.

Water energy is NOT FREE - same reason as wind energy.

Vitriola's picture

Oh for pete's sake...

Vitriola — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 14:02

Is THIS what all the furor was about?  What a silly pointless thing if so.

I know that sunlight is not free.  It comes from fusion of hydrogen into helium.  I know that solar panels can give off more energy than they themselves cost to run.  Does that energy come from somewhere?  Of course it does!  If this gizmo in Australia works as the guys suggests, does the energy come from somewhere?  Of course it must.  Where does it come from?  Well, I have no idea though I have some guesses.

Was all this commotion over semantics???  OMG!

Dufe's picture

Look, you have to admit that

Dufe — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 15:41

Look, you have to admit that your OP, "I was hoping that this would come back on the market since it was suppressed in the '70s." sounds like it is VERY stongly in support of the device/concept.  I'm glad that you want the debate to end, but you might just have to admit you were wrong for that to happen.

Vitriola's picture

Sort of

Vitriola — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 17:38

I am in support of having something to evaluate.  As I said, a solar panel "produces" more energy than it uses.  I would have wanted to see those also.  I still have photocopies of those articles.  Many people evaluated it and it received wide public attention.  Things like this should be easily and quickly debunked.  It takes something to get into and remain in the public spotlight.  That is the dream, and I believed that I used that word.  Simple as that.

Shihli's picture

No, a solar panel does NOT

Shihli — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 17:59

No, a solar panel does NOT produce more energy than it uses.  The strong majority of the energy that strikes a solar panel merely heats it up or dissipates.  Yes, it produces USABLE electricity out of sunlight, which is energy that otherwise goes to waste (speaking from a mechanical point of view), but it DOES NOT produce more energy than the amount of light that strikes it.

Vitriola's picture

Come on now...

Vitriola — Tue, 09/01/2009 - 01:55

I even said what I meant here.  More energy goes out of a solar panel than it takes to run.  Solar panels do not need a power supply.  Remember the context.  You are speaking of efficiency of power conversion and using that to quibble.

If you insist in discussing power sources then lets do that.  Solar panels can produce electricity.  Where does that come from?  Sunlight.  Where does that come from? The fusion of hydrogen into helium. Where does that come from? hmmm...  Lets just say the big bang.  (I am guessing at what you might have said on that one.)  Now, here comes the fun one... Where did *that* come from? If you absoluetly MUST trace all power emissions back to its ultimate source, why not keep going?  My point is that we need to stay within context or it gets night impossible to stay on subject.

Also, are you actually letting this discussion carry over into game play?  Where would be the fun in that?

for the record

Vitriola — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 06:17

For all those that feel like taking pot shots at me is great sport, and I have the STRONG feeling that you are far more adept at dishing it out than taking it, I would like to point out that I said that it had been REDISCOVERED.  (We lost the ability to do many of the things that Tesla did when he died.)  That means that this is as valid as what HE did.  For those a bit slower on the uptake, it means that, if tesla was wrong, this probably is too.  And if Tesla was right, then this probably is too.

I never said that it was true.  I just thought that it was cool and something to look into.

For those who just cannot wait to start another rant about science I would like to mention that the scientific method involves experimentation, at least in physics.  If you want to prove things without experimenting, stick with math.  If someone said that he could make a huge amount of thermal energy with a small stick of wood, you do not excoriate the man.  You just go to his house, watch him take a match to a bunch of charcoal and tell him about burning fuel.  The scientific method investigates before it decides.  The approach taken here is the kind of thing that got Galileo improsoned.  What is next?  Burning books?  Burning people?  I see the people burning going on in this thread so that could be my answer.

Lighten up.  Stick to reason.  I will not say that the man's claims are true until they are verified.  Let me say that again with a bit more clarification.  I cannot accept what he claims and therefore not testify that his claims are true until they are verified or debunked.  Apparently you can.  That is not the way of science.  That is a witch hunt.  Still, you follow the path of many a self righteous witch hunter that burned heretics for saying something they did not like.

NOTE:  even if what the heretic said was wrong, it would be better to reason it out rather than just go for the kill.

So, before you take things too far based on what you THINK that I am saying, reread the above.  The follow up posts were me trying to show that there was at least cause to consider what was going on in Australia NOT me trying to prove that it is true.  All those things said, in my opinion, was that it should not be dismissed out of hand.  Investigation, read "scientific method", should come into play at this point.

Conclusion: Please do not attribute things to me that I do not intend.  Please play nice or consider that you are inviting others to respond in kind.  I would hate to be in the center of a flame war, especially as I can throw gas on it as well as the next man.  Been there.  Done that.  No need to repeat the experience.

By posting something such as

Shihli — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 14:01

By posting something such as this perpetual motion machine (millions of which have been "built" and none of which have EVER worked) and throwing yourself in behind it, you're showing support.  We're showing you why this machine is stupid, flawed, and does not work - Garreth even provided a link to a guy BUYING THE MACHINE AND BUILDING IT HIMSELF.

That said, there are certain things that we can all expect to occur.  Certain things we know are true.

If you jump off the roof of your house, you will NOT magically levitate into the sky and begin flying.  No - you will actually fall and probably break your legs, if not your hips and back.

If you open your mouth underwater, you will NOT magically sprout gills and begin to breathe underwater.  No - you will just start drowning.

If you design a perpetual motion machine, it will NOT work - as the concept behind them (getting more energy out of it than you put into it) DOES NOT WORK.  If you have a 1 gallon jug of milk, you're only going to get ONE GALLON of milk out of it.  You won't get two gallons.  It's not possible.  It means you literally CREATED MILK (aka CREATED MATTER) that did not exist prior to your use of said milk.

Perpetual motion (free energy) machines do not work.

On a similar note, it seems

Dufe — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 08:30

On a similar note, it seems you may be taking personally that which was not intended as a personal attack.  Having read through this a couple of times, it seems that the comments are directed at the concept presented, and less at the presenter.  Please do not attribute to others that which they did not intend.  It goes both ways.

Vitriola's picture

You may be right.  I have had

Vitriola — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 08:59

You may be right.  I have had so much thrown at me that I may very well be jumping at shadows.  When Garreth, who, otherwise, has me on ignore would speak here and jumped right in with a "use your fucking brains" I thought "here we go again".  It is not the way that I see it but I can see the possibility of a slanted view of it on my part and admit that it could very well be just as you say.  That is much of the reason that I tried to be as polite as I could.

Of course, I was hoping that one of the people that was saying the things that I was taking as abusive would be the ones to say that they did not mean it in that fashion.  That would have helped mightily, but it seems that I should not hold my breath on that count.  Comments like "linking to "Magniworks" completely taints and devalues anything of worth you have to say" shows the witch hunt bias to which I referred.  Even a link coupled with an open declaration that I do not accept it as demonstrably true is enough to be put on the block.  But, many people are dismissive and intolerant.  That is just the way of things these days, it seems.

So, it still seems to me that it is as I thought, but you may well be right.  Thanks for saying it.  I, at least, do not like taking shots at the innocent.  If I did misinterpret, I apologize.  :)

I will censor my posts greatly from now on to avoid such incendiary reactions.

Don't show YOUR ignorance of the difference.

I'm not a science major. I don't know science jargon.

I did read the website linked in the OP. They used free in regards to not paying the electric company. The basis of all my statements were on that definition of free, not paying the electric company. Wiges and Vit:

Go buy one of these things. Build it. Run it. Provide proof of your amazing revelation in physics. Then you can post your antagonistic slogans when you put your money where your mouths are.

Until then, when we post saying that your logic is flawed and your understandings of the fundamentals of how all this works is broken, you can't boo-hoo that we're attacking you. You gotta put up some muthafuckin' numbers and ARGUE with SCIENCE.

Once again: Be prepared to FIGHT for this if you believe in it wholeheartedly. You can't cry that we disagree with you spectacularly. You throw around Galileo and the prejudice that he faced. Galileo had some fucking numbers to fall back on. Present us yours and suck it up, buttercup.

Vitriola's picture

oh poop!

Vitriola — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 13:27

Come on, G.  I said openly that I do not declare this to be true so leave off.  I do not care if someone disagrees.  In a free society people are *supposed* to disagree.  I do not mind being proven wrong.  That is all standard stuff and it was never my bone of contention.

It is when it degenerates to "read a basic textbook" (saying that I am ignorant, which I am not) and "use your fucking brains" which is a crude way to call me an idiot.  That is personal.  The opinions themselves I have no problem with.  Remember, you were not actually disagreeing with me as I did NOT say it was true.  You jumped the gun and went for me, as I read it, and which you do not dispute.

I will fight when I think that there is something to fight for but I said again and again and again and again that I do NOT have a vested interest in the technology.

Is this going to cause a rift or can we take the advice from the book "The Virginian": "Smile when you say that so we know that we are all still friends."

garreth — Mon, 08/31/2009 - 08:22

There is a massive difference between free discourse and an obvious scam. Get a better link up to start a conversation and you'll have a more legitimate give-and-take in ideas. Otherwise, linking to "Magniworks" completely taints and devalues anything of worth you have to say.

Let me reiterate: TRASH IN, TRASH OUT. Start at a fundamentally sound basis and we'll give the subject the due course it deserves.
