Need help diagnosing a comp. problem
Popplegem — Sat, 09/12/2009 - 18:38
So hi all. I was playing WoW earlier today when my screen started glitching, badly. I got the blue screen of death, restarted, deleted some old files, and restarted WoW. Played for a little bit, then crashed again. The screen itself turns off like it has no signal, but the computer is on and running.
Now, when I try and turn it on, the screen is glitchy and then before it even loads the Welcome Blue screen, the screen itself shuts off and the computer is still running. I'm planning on taking it in to a computer place in the Tri-Cities somewhere, probably best buy, but maybe one of you or multiples of you have an idea I can go to them with so I don't sound like a total noob? Or maybe someone knows a better place in the Tri-Cities washington to take the computer?
Cheers, all, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can,
PG (aka, Laura)

Prime8 — Sun, 09/13/2009 - 10:47From the information you gave, its probably your power supply, graphics card, or the screen itself. What sort of computer is it? Since you're saying screen instead of monitor, I'm assuming this is a laptop. If that's the case, its a bit harder to do the work yourself. What's the manufacturer and model? I would stay away from Best Buy unless you bought it from there.
I think there's a seedy place
Dufe — Sun, 09/13/2009 - 08:53I think there's a seedy place in the Tri-Cities known as Dufe's Computer Shop. The service is terrible and the techs smell funny, but they generally get the job done. The only problem is that they are only able to be open this particular week on one night (not sure if it will be Wed or Thurs at this point).

download this. As long as your running an ATI or nVidia card this will run. Start it up run the test and check the tempurature. If your getting close to or above 60 your video card is probably dying.
Regardless of the result above turn off your computer get to the bios. usually this is mashing delete or f1 right when your power on your system. After you get your bios look for an option about tempurature monitoring (hopefuly) and set the range to 60-70. Just use as normal and if you hear a warning or your pc auto shutdowns or soemthing, you have heating problems in your case. (possibly a dead cpu fan?).

Shihli — Sat, 09/12/2009 - 19:05Sounds like any of the following:
1) Screen dying (less likely)
2) Computer overheating (very likely)
3) Graphics card failing/overheating (very likely)
Any of the above, you should take it to Best Buy regardless.
