in search of ccna info.

darkwolf — Thu, 10/08/2009 - 07:58

I am gonna try for my ccna again i have narrowed down my weak points well my major weak points. I wanted to ask if anybody in guild was good with networking if they could point me to some good resources for acl and subnetting, i am in the process of reading up ip addressing atm but subnetting always gets me, well off to go review some more.

thank you for the help

Like Dufe said, Subnetting

Agoney — Thu, 10/08/2009 - 11:37

Like Dufe said, Subnetting you really just have to practice and engrave into memory. Theres a bunch of different ways to do it.. just do whatever is easiest and fastest for you. You should be able to memorize what /30, /29, /28 etc translate to.

ACLs can get complex i guess, but just remember only one applied per interface and always an implicit deny at the end of each statement, and the ability to use wildcard masks.

I recommend using CBT nuggets. You can buy this online at cbtnuggets.com or perhaps potentially maybe find it in an alternative area of the internet for a lot cheaper however im sure it'll pay for itself. The guy is really really good at teaching you the fundamentals, and spends quite a bit of time on Subnetting and ACLs. I believe theres videos for CCENT, CCNA, and CCNP. He really shows you step by step how to do things (and he mentions world of warcraft a lot!)

Cisco has a pretty good

Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 10/08/2009 - 09:46

Cisco has a pretty good article that is easy to understand for so called new users:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk365/technologies_tech_note09186a00800a67f5.shtml

I have many books on this subject and I actually helped implement IPV6 subnetting at one of my previous jobs programming firmware for alarm monitoring systems.  Don't ask this job was super low level programming having to use an oscilioscope to monitor signals going through circuts to debug my code...so fun.

If you have any questions I can help you when possible.  It all basically comes down to binary math and bitwise calculations to figure out how a subnet will work and how many nodes a subnet can have.

If you are talking about Access Control Lists (ACL's), I have not done alot with the networking ACL's but have done plenty of work with File System ACL's

Working on alarm monitoring

Working on alarm monitoring systems can add some good effects on one's background. Low level they may say, but still an important aspect in every system.

Yes i was talking about

Personally, I think

Dufe — Thu, 10/08/2009 - 08:10

Personally, I think subnetting is like mulitplication tables:  You really just have to practice over, and over, and over - until the repetition drills it in there for good.  Of course you want to understand what's going on behind the scenes, but for speed's sake (for RL and for the test), I'd go for memory method.
