Building new PC
Agoney — Mon, 11/16/2009 - 12:26
Like the title says, I'm building a new PC. I have really good computer knowledge etc, but I want to see what everyone would be with the following criteria, to ensure I build a proper system.
Basically, criteria is as follows:
$700 ish budget
4gigs ram
Don't need a case, HD, or an OS, or a burner.
Nvidia graphics (unless you can tell me why i should go ATI)
Pref Asus mobo
I'd be interested in seeing what you guys come up with. This will be for gaming, networking, video editing etc. It will more then likely be running Windows 7 (more then likely 64bit).

Haha, oddly, that happens

It's i5 time in that price
garreth — Tue, 11/17/2009 - 16:34It's i5 time in that price range with no need for case, HD, OS, burner and, I'm assuming, PSU:
So, yeah, that's a bit over $700, but if you can spare it, do it. I'm a huge Nvidia fanboy, but the performance out of these 5850 to 58570s is absolutely obscene.
Here's what I've put together
Agoney — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:00Here's what I've put together so far, just need vid card n we're golden.
Proc: i5 750, $200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215
mobo: ASUS P7P55D : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131404
PS: CORSAIR 750W ATX12V : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
ram: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260
vid: ???/
I wonder if the 750w is going to be overkill though.. 98% sure I wont OC anything, and only have 2 120mm & 1 40mm fan, 2 Sata HDs, Dvd burner and the above listed.
750w is overkill, definitely.
starstalker — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 13:31750w is overkill, definitely. You can run almost anything (short of a dual gpu or a high end crossfire/sli setup) on 550w. For example, I run a quad core Intel, 2x4850's in sli, 5 sata drives, 2 burners, 4 sticks of ram, and 4 fans all off an earthwatts 550w psu.
As for the video card, with the 5000 series out from ATI, I really have trouble recommending anything from nvidia. But if you really want a recommendation, I wouldn't go any lower than this

Yeah, right now it's between
Agoney — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 13:47Yeah, right now it's between the card dufe recommended and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102852
I think I'm leaning more toward the 4890 though.. The only negative i guess is that it doesnt support dx11 but will that really affect WoW performance at all?

1GB for $38.00 -- too good to pass up :)
Personally, I would go with
starstalker — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 15:46Personally, I would go with the 5770. Yes, it has lower performance than the 4890 in todays games, but it has lower power consumption and more advanced features that should make it viable for tomorrow's games. And both cards have more than enough performance for WoW.
I ended up with the 4890.
Agoney — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 17:38I ended up with the 4890. Haha, if I do upgrade to a better card in the future, mine will be a decent one to pawn to a friend.
True. And DX11 support.
Dufe — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 16:05True. And DX11 support.
That card is more than enough
garreth — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 14:04That card is more than enough for WoW.

Dufe — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:50I knew there'd be a reasonable chart somewhere. It's on a single SSD, but changing that to 2xHDD and adding a burner isn't going to throw things all that much higher.
I'm pretty sure you could get
Dufe — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:06I'm sure you could get by pretty easily in the 550-600 range.
Yeah.. I forgot i needed
Agoney — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 10:52Yeah.. I forgot i needed PSU.. old one is only a 550 and prob no i5/i7 support. I've been really really upset with nvidia lately due to all these blue screens whenever I play a game. I was looking at ATI but wasn't sure what to get really.
$300 might be a little steap for a card for me, at the moment. Here's a few im looking at.

I'm thinking the second one.. I lose quite a bit DPS alone I think due to my machine just lagging in uld & toc.. I can imagine icc will be only worse!!
If you can squeek out a few
Dufe — Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:22If you can squeek out a few extra bucks (~$20-$30), the 4890 really holds a pretty solid performance lead over either the 5770 or the 4870. Otherwise I'd probably go with that 4870 like you said - the 5750 really isn't as hot a performer as the xx70 cards.
