The Fallacy That All Paladins Should Socket Nothing But Int
garreth — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 05:22
Assumption: "Paladins should socket nothing but 20 int gems, regardless of socket bonus and other stats since int gives sp, effective mp5 and mana."
After being told I was a "lolfag" for "socketing mp5" this evening, I decided to go verify if the conventional wisdom that all paladins should only socket 20 int gems held true. After all, if all of Ensidia's paladins socket nothing but Int, that must mean it's the absolute only way to go, right? We all want to be as good as Ensidia, right?
Well, I don't "socket mp5". I socket for what I deem decent socket bonuses that allow for greater throughput without gimping my longevity. You see, I don't run out of mana. You've heard me brag, and you've seen me at 40% mana on most boss deaths. On tonight's hard mode Mimiron, on our kill with 1 second to spare, I still had 30% mana after nonstop power-healing for the duration of the fight. I'd like to think I did pretty good.
So, would I have done "better" if I had socketed nothing but int? No. And here's why:
If you're not running out of mana (which I'm not), current ToC paladin itemization makes socket bonuses outweigh pure-int socketing when looking at THROUGHPUT. In the case of our gear (or, specifically, my gear) almost all socket bonuses are in SP. As awesome as the coefficient is for int->sp for paladins (20% of total int is converted into spell power), the set bonuses along with my various int/sp gems outweigh the conversion of only int to sp. Here's a chart:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnOmFUzXaXK6dDRqalVUODFuZGVKZG9HdGNFSHJFWnc&hl=en
There are three scenarios listed:
- Current gear where I use 10int/5mp5 to hit socket bonuses on various items<
- Where I replace ONLY those 10int/5mp5 gems with 20 int gems and thus break the bonuses on those items
- Where I replace everything with 20 int gems
What really matters are the bottom, bold numbers: mana pool, effective mp5, and spell power. As we can see moving from scenario 1 to scenario 3, I'm gaining mana pool and losing SP.
So, yay! I gain mana and a lot of mp5! But wait. I don't need either. I'm already outlasting every boss. I need that SP (and more haste, imo) while carefully balancing int and existing mp5. We're not wiping in Phase 3 HM Anub because I'm running out of mana. A bigger mana pool simply doesn't help me do my job better.
So why all this "conventional wisdom" about socketing nothing but int? Well, because 1) it's easy and 2) it's good enough. When a newbie pally asks me what he should socket, I say "int" because it's easier that going over all his gear and play style. When elitist dickbags in other guilds on Gorg accost me for "socketing mp5", not only are they showing they only know how to cookie-cutter in this game they also show that they're terrible at arithmetic. My suggestion to them is: Add up the numbers, be a better player, don't fall back on dismissive platitudes.
And, if Ensidia does it, that must be the only way to do it, right?

garreth — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 13:31Note that the caveat to my diatribe up there is that all our raid encounters have not required the massive regen that all int provides. Yet.
Last night, as the solo holy light-bomber on both OTs (with beacon on tank) for Phase 3 Anub I started to hit the edge of my gemming's capability. Barely ;) If I continue to have to play the role of "holy light spam the shit out of the offtanks", then I may consider all-int gemming.

Elapsed — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 20:19Yes there's also another reason or kind (myself included) tends to gem just INT. That is because just like tanks (speaking outside the guild) are judged on their EH we pally's are judged on our mana pools. It's a sad state of affairs but it's how the world is.

garreth — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 15:13In 226 and lower gear, only socketing 20 int was a good strategy. The socket bonuses were "meh" and all that int led to some decent throughput-as-logevity. However, to do that now in 245 and 258 gear is simply retarded and shows how myopic a lot of WoW players are. The raw mp5 we have on gear now is close to "enough", leaving us with more options which a lot of paladins throw away blindly because some random guy from Ensidia does it.
Speaking of thinking outside the box, take a look at one of Premonition's top pallys: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Sen'jin&n=Zaroua. I don't know if I have the balls to pull something like that off, but they've obviously take him to a few HM Anub kills and he doesn't appear to be holding them back ;)
To answer the question as to why I socket 10 int/5mp5 in those blue slots: The day that Blizzard releases a blue/green Int+Haste gem, I'm all over that shit. Until then, to fill that socket bonus, int is good and mp5 is still useful (especially post-3.2). Coupled with the sp gain from socket bonuses, it's all stats I need.
One 20 int gem gives you the following:
Which gives you:
I talk to one of
Ghli — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 17:03I talk to one of Eternity/Serious Player's priest (who disbanded after downing KJ after they xfered off Gorgonnash) on a semi-regular basic, and he suggested that I actually gem sockets to something similar to what Zaroua does and do nothing but FoL all day in raid. To be honest, Zaroua's glyphs, spec, gear, and gem choices does allow him to do one thing very well: a very strong Flash of Light spam without the chance of going out of mana. Is it wrong? No. Would I acutally do something like what Zaroua does? Probably not. Gemming nothing but Int and ignoring sockets, in my opinion, gives you the most easiest way to gem and to get a larger mana pool to do anything be it tank healing or raid healing. Gemming nothing but spellpower and ignoring socket bonuses gives your heals a higher baseline heal, but you need to pay more attention to your mana pool. Gemming nothing but mp5 gives you longevity but a weaker baseline heal. Zaroua having both versions of Solace of the Defeated allows him to not really worry about his mana pool any more as he has 569 mp5 with out replenishment or raid-buffs+DP. You also have to factor in that Zaroua took 4/5 Divine Intellect instead of 5/5 DI (probably to take 3/3 Imp devo aura)
For my own gemming, I rather take the middle road and be flexible. Would it be nice to actually gem for whatever encounter we do for every fight? Sure, but not many people would actually min/max that much just for 1 particular fight. An easy example would be Mirimon normal mode. There are "breaks" in between phases. Would it be make more sense to gem for mp5 just for that fight? Not really. A good paladin will regen at least 25% of his mana as soon each phase is over. Another fight would be General Vezax. MP5 is not available and you might as well gem (and gear) for intel or spellpower (gotta watch your mana pool carefully) for that fight.

garreth — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 18:24It's a good read, I love Ferraro. I tend to play outside of a set box of "gear for this one spell" and tend to use FoL and HL in parity. Ferraro's logic is still a bit busted though: If you're a HL bomber and aren't going OOM... why keep stacking the pool and regen from Int?

saedo — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 15:41Well look at the trinkets he has. Combined that's 272 mp5 right there, so he's actually sitting on 569 mp5 while casting (so long as he is casting once per 10 sec). That and it's probably his set to push his Orange Shield bubbles to it's max potential. Is this that same pally that was interviewed on WorldofRaids? I remember him saying he made 2 sets, one to max spell power for the mace, and one for more mana pools.
Also, Garreth, rate my other main plx, http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gorgonnash&n=Tuque
I'm kinda curious what to fix up on it.

OMG ARP IS GUD, GEM ALL ARP!
OMG HIT IS GUD, GEM ALL HIT! MUST GET 10 MORE HIT EVEN IF I DROP 200 SPELLPOWER TO GET IT!
Most people don't analyze and weigh costs. They focus on one singular stat cause it's easy, and ignore everything else regardless of what they have to sacrifice.

primistic — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 17:53I don't know about other classes who gem all INT, SP or other stats, but right now, I will totally ignore the socket bonus and gemmed ArPen.. not that i'm lazy or it's easy, but that's the best stat as of now..

saedo — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 17:57As long as you know reasons behind it. I know of rogues that gem ArP not knowing anything. Just the flavor stat of the month. Stack stack stack. Gem it regardless of the fact they don't have the gear to support it, or how some socket bonuses are worth doing, etc.
Yeaup on my warrior all Gems
Dragon — Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:38Yeaup on my warrior all Gems are ARP cept for the 10 stats gem for the socket bonus and orange sockets that get turned into 10 str/10 crit gems just because they supply slightly higher dps. The catch is always knowing what you need.
