New DK player and a Virgin Raider to boot
Omnisiah — Thu, 02/25/2010 - 01:31
Hey Hey, Im a new member of the Guild. Ive been playing since Beta, but I've been a hermit solo player right up until they added the Random Dungeon stuff. Now I've got Raid Fever.
Garreth and I went to school together for awhile, so once I got Raid Fever I hopped on his guild bandwagon. I really like the Downfall atmosphere a lot, both here and in WoW.
Im really used to being a Hunter, but I wanted to try my hand at being a Tank DK. I would love to hear any advice people have as I work this toon up to 80. Advice on Power Leveling him, and preparign his Gear and Talents for Raiding. Also, advice on How to play a DK could help a lot too.
This is mostly an announcement post, Ill be looking over these forums and Garreth pointed me in the direction of the Elitist Jerks site, so I will look over that stuff too. Any direct recomendations on talent builds, or other advice, or links to particularly helpful sites, let me know, I play multiple times per week, so Im sure I will see you all around!
Thanks!

Advice from Shihli
Shihli — Thu, 02/25/2010 - 02:05First off - hello! Also, Garreth tells me you went to PHS? I'm Andrew Zollars, not certain if I know you or not but you might know me or my sister, Melanie.
Anywho - advice.
1) Specs. Pick a flavor to suit your playstyle, your three choices are, essentially:
- Blood: Highest health pool of the three specs. Decent-to-strong single-target threat (you need a warrior or rogue to maximize though), poor AoE threat generation. Will of the Necropolis and Vampiric Blood are strong tanking talents. The straightforward nature of the Blood tree lends itself very easily to 50/5+/8+ builds very easily. Provides two raid buffs in Abomination's Might and Hysteria.

Recommended Blood tanking build at 80: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#jcEGVh0IcbRbssxhxZ0xh:GoiMmV
---
- Frost: Very good overall damage reduction. Good single-target threat and good AoE threat generation. Unbreakable Armor is a decent tanking talent but only really good for mitigating melee damage. Kind of a mixed bag - you can tank with a twohander or two one-handed weapons if you wish, however the tree is currently built favoring dual-wield options so I'm only providing them. Dps build provides a raid buff (Icy Talons) but the tank build does not.
Specs ripped from Quisjaa.

- Unholy - My personal favorite tree. I have been specced as Unholy for DPS since the Wrath open beta, and have been specced Unholy for tanking off-and-on the same length of time. Currently, it has the "worst" tanking cooldown in Bone Shield - it allows for less overall damage taken from all sources on average, but it is not an "oh shit" button the same way Vampiric Blood or Unbreakable Armor are. Unholy also gets Anti-Magic Zone - a very strong AoE "oh shit" button, but only for spell damage. Unholy has good single-target threat generation and very good AoE threat generation. Both builds provide a raid buff (Ebon Plague).

I can add more at a later time, this should be a good start.

Omnisiah — Thu, 02/25/2010 - 20:54I think I might recall your sister Emily. My name is Jason Bishop, I was class of 99. When chris mentioned your name it sounded familier so I looked you up in the yearbook. You look familiar but I dont think we knew each other.
As far as the build go, there is some very interesting stuff in there. Ill look over them a bit more, but at the moment I think I am favoring the Blood lvling build for now, but the Unholy tank build at a higher level
Ill probably have lots of questions about How to actually tank, Im new to being in a group, and even newer to being the tank of the group.
For Omnisiah (continued)
Shihli — Fri, 02/26/2010 - 01:293) How to tank
Basic idea - you want to be hit the hardest, the most frequently, and by the most mobs. Moreso than anyone else.
How to do this:
#1 - be in Frost Presence. Your threat generation is dramatically increased (threat being a combat characteristic that everyone generates - tanks make more than anyone else), your stamina is increased, the damage you take is decreased, and your armor is increased. You won't generate enough threat if you try to tank in Blood or Unholy Presence - particularly since you'll be much easier to kill.
#2 - Is a mob/enemy attacking someone else? Use Dark Command or Death Grip to taunt them off and stick them back on you. Dark Command has a 7 second cooldown, Death Grip has a 35 second cooldown. Both act as taunts.
#3 - stats. First one you want to "cap" is defense. You need a Defense skill of 540 to be "uncrittable" by NPC mobs that are "boss" level (lv. 83). A Defense skill of 535 will make you uncrittable by lv. 82 NPC mobs - the highest you'll see in a 5-man heroic dungeon.
To reach 540 Defense skill, you need to acquire 115 Defense skill from gear (you'll get 400 from being lv. 80, and 25 from using the Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle - and its variants - on your weapon). 115 Defense skill translates to 566 Defense rating (4.92 Defense rating = 1 Defense skill).
After reaching the Defense skill cap, you'll want to think about keeping your Hit rating and Expertise rating up to par. The hit rating cap is 263 rating (+8% chance to hit, you can't miss) and the expertise rating is 173 (with talents, translates to an expertise skill of 26 - means NPC's can't dodge your attacks). If you reach both caps, you will only miss your target with melee attacks 6.5% of the time (due to parries). It's advised to get close to both caps, however it's not 100% necessary and it's generally only reachable at endgame gear levels.
Beyond Defense, hit, and expertise - you need loads of stamina, dodge, and parry. Generally speaking, your gear will have plenty of stamina so don't worry too much about that. However, if given a choice between dodge and parry, always go for dodge - Death Knights swim in parry due to our Strength/Parry conversion, and parry reaches its effective skill cap very quickly for us.
#4 - Gems/enchants
Here's what I usually gun for:
Meta-gem: [41380]
Blue gems: [40119] (and its lesser-quality variants)
Red gems: [40138] (and its lesser-quality variants) OR [40141] (and its lesser-qualiy variants)
Yellow gems: [40167] (and its lesser-quality variants) OR [40166] (and its lesser-quality variants)
Head enchant: [50369]
Shoulder enchant: [50337]
Back enchant: [44457]
Chest enchant: [44465]
Wrist enchant: [44947]
Hands enchant: [38990]
Legs enchant: [38373]
Feet enchant: [39006]
Weapon runeforge: Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle OR Rune of the Nerubian Carapace (x2)
Wow, that is an intense level
Omnisiah — Fri, 02/26/2010 - 16:13Wow, that is an intense level of information! And all very useful. When I go searching for info, I tend to find an over abundance of information, much of it contradictory from person to person. This sounds really solid and its laid out really well.
Thanks for all the suggestions, let me know if you have any others!
Also, Im not the fastest level'r on the planet, so it should take me a little bit to get up to 80, but in the meantime while I am leveling, any suggestions on how to meet some of these goals. Obviously I can't really gear up until Im the right level, so I suppose the most I can do on my way up is to practice how to play it, dungeon tank, get used to my skills and so forth, right?

Omnisiah — Fri, 02/26/2010 - 16:01lol, as soon as I re-read my post I realized I had written it wrong. I do remember your sister Melanie. I don't think we ever had any classes together or anything, but I knew a lot of the people in her class.
