Building A New Computer - Would Love Any Advice!
Disrupter — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 01:48
Hey guys! I have intention to upgrade my computer and this is what we came up with. I'm a little ignorant on what's good and what's not, and I was considering the WoW Cube but due to multiple reasons I'm going to need to build it from mostly scratch. This is a gaming computer for around 600~ worth of items.

These are the items my father came up with when he did a search, a form of rough draft, and I wanted to run it by you guys and see what you all thought. We're looing at a quad core cpu with a double video card set up, supposedly it's alot better? I wanted to know what your guys opinions are, he's pretty pissed that I won't just take his word for it but I don't want all that money to be spent and find out it was a stupid mistake :P. So if anyone that's knowledgeable about this and would like to take a whack at helping that'd be awesome.
(5-6 hundred, apparently wants AMD over Intel, we'll be buying the parts over a few month period.)

Why DDR2 and not 3? I'd skip
Agoney — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 08:38Why DDR2 and not 3? I'd skip out on a second vid card and get this. Youd have to replace your mobo though, but there should be similiar priced ones.
no Western Digital?
talisdar — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 09:42I have ran Western Digital for ever, my smallest drive that I still own is a 10 GB HD it still runs fine, and is over 15 years old. I guess some people do not have good luck with them.
In my current PC there is three HD's
Maxtor 500 GB
Seagate 1.5 TB
WD 500 GB
If you plan on playing only
Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 07:46If you plan on playing only WoW do not waste money on a double video setup, WoW does not support it.
From a WoW GM:
"As Hazegood mentions, World of Warcraft doesn't offer an benefits from using an SLI set-up, what performance gains you may experience are quire small. For a SLI set-up to work the game needs to built up from the start with this in mind and generally SLI will only show itself when using FPS type games."
I am pretty sure nothing has changed since 2008 when this was posted on the WoW forums, as the GM said the game has to be built from the core for SLI and WoW is not, maybe Cataclysm but most likely not.
SLI = a lot of heat
talisdar — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 08:22I have a tri SLI MB hey it was cheap, and run a GTX260 at 1920x1200 max everything and get 30+ FPS in ICC with Tuesday night lag! It is all that you need unless your doing something else with the PC.
I was referring to having 2
Knoppix (not verified) — Thu, 03/11/2010 - 08:54I was referring to having 2 seperate graphics cards in SLI, almost all decent mobo's now come with 2-3 slots for a graphics card so that you can do SLI or tripple SLI.
I think I read your post right I could have mis read it is early and I got 3 hours of sleep. And yes running SLI of any form on air runs hot, hence why I invested in a good water cooling solution..."what is that thing by your PC", "that is a radiator to keep my PC cool honey"
