Shihli — Thu, 06/03/2010 - 16:14I think this might be the first time something I found was used in a lecture. Kinda gives me a tingly feeling. In my pants.

Ewiges — Wed, 06/09/2010 - 23:16So... he starts off talking about a professor who used xp instead of points to make it more fun... then he talks about gaining points for 7 minutes.
And whats the point of getting all these points, tax incentives? People they play boring games so why would they do these? I think its a flawed concept but is getting popularity because it was on g4.

Shihli — Thu, 06/10/2010 - 00:08He didn't use "xp" instead of points to make it more fun, per se. He used it to encourage kids to act in a specific manner (get good grades, study, etc) for a specific reward ("xp").
It's called Skinner Conditioning (or Operant Conditioning).
I can see how valuable it would be to a marketing campaign. Think about it - let's say that for every airplane flight you take, you get a certain number of points. You can then use those points to "buy" other flights for free, assuming you've obtained enough of them to do so. Fly with that specific airline enough times, and you could forseeably fly around the world for free.
If that sounds familiar, it's because it's frequent flier miles. Very good example of the idea.
I have 8/10 experience points
Elapsed — Sun, 06/13/2010 - 07:46I have 8/10 experience points at my local coffee shop! 2 more and I get a free coffee. Same at the barber I go to!

Derchlon — Wed, 06/09/2010 - 23:39wigs, people will be motivated to get points just because they receive points. People do things in Xbox360 games for achievements. What can you do with those acheivement points? Nothing, but people earn them anyway. Same with Acheivements in WOW. You can't do anything with those points, but people go out of their way to get them.
It is an incentive with no real reward, and people will fall for it. Not everyone will, but I think it could definitely drive marketing.

Shihli — Wed, 06/02/2010 - 12:57Interesting point of view on the evolution of "gaming" as we know it, as well as a little poke at how gaming can be used to track your behavior - from what you eat for breakfast to what you read.
lol
h4mm32 — Thu, 06/03/2010 - 01:33just think of all the clothes mods and tv mods and book mods that will hack the system to implement more points so you can get more cool free stuff yay! just because its hack proof doesn't mean we wont hack it yay! .....wait
