Guild Meetup: Collective Stupidity
garreth — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 17:50
What Saja and I have had to deal with the last 3 weeks has reinforced something WoW has taught me these last few years: You can only please some of the people some of the time.
To recap: For this year's guild meetup we have a fee of $35 to attend, covering the costs of 2 full days of activiites. This covers the cost of things like:
- The provisions for the first party
- Reservation fees for the park on Saturday
- The copious quantities of food at the park on Saturday
- The provisions for the party Saturday night
- Gas money to help out the people who ended up playing taxi for 3 straight days
- A guild t-shirt since that was the NUMBER ONE THING REQUESTED AS PART OF LAST YEAR'S MEETUP
This seems pretty fair and we worked hard to get an accurate estimate for the cost. Since the cost is quite variable (shirt cost goes down per number printed, keg per-capita cost lowers with more people etc, park reservation goes UP stepwise with more people, gas goes up with more people) this is actually on the low side.
I'd also like to fill you all in a big "secret" about last year's meetup: The VAST majority of the costs were footed by about 3 people. We're talking HUNDREDS of dollars donated EACH. The cute little donate jar? It covered a bit of food and a couple six packs of beer. EVERYTHING else was because of a few generous people. We won't have that luxury this year, thus the cost must be spread fairly and evenly this time around.
That brings me to the subject of fairness. Fairness is paying your part, evenly. Fairness isn't bitching about finally having to play your part.
Don't want a t-shirt? After having the majority of people complain that the shirts weren't ready last year, we thought we'd pitch them in as part of the cost. Apparently, the extra $15 for the shirt is the sticking point for some people. In the spirit of flexibility, if you don't want a shirt, just paypal $20 to my email account (bloomcb AT gmail dot com, the account that is handling all this aggregation of funds)
I understand that things are tough for some folks and that some people are nearly hitchiking to be able to make it. I, too, feel your pain for I am one of you. Leave the t-shirt off and do the $20 fee mentioned above.
Now, here's where I lose my shit. A couple of folks have decided that because they donated a six pack last year - and that magically made everything happen - it's OUTRAGEOUS that they be required to pay more than this. Some have gone so far as to accuse me of fraud, overcharging on purpose.
I have one response to this:
If you'd like to manage and plan and schedule this, design the tshirts and haggle a good deal with a local printer, build the ecommerce interface to the website to manage payments (with a paper trail), buy the entire list of food and beverages and work out the sleeping arrangements I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO FORWARD YOU THE BALANCE OF ALL THE PAYMENTS SO THAT YOU CAN MANAGE THIS MEETUP YOURSELF AS WELL AS NEXT YEAR'S.

If you were the one

The grown up part of me gets
Scaron — Sat, 08/07/2010 - 16:38The grown up part of me gets all ruffled when I hear about stuff like this. When I was younger I got all self-righteous about how much things (think college tuition, conference fees, etc.) cost. My estimation was always low--too many things I failed too account for. I think this is something folks do chronically.
Just a touch of perspective wouldn't hurt here for those of you who feel overcharged. For me to go to an annual conference for work: 150 bucks (100 as a student). No tshirt, no booze, no food. Just some shitty printed program and a 2 dollar name badge. The balance of the funds went to keeping the organization healthy and in the black. Sure some people whine about the conference fees on listserves...and in so doing they marginalized themselves because in the real world nobody gives a shit about them; their incessant squawking gradually becomes the background noise we expect and ignore.
Also, in many professional and recreational associations, the cost of conference attendance goes to cover the cost of the perks of organizational membership. Garreth et al are, in my opinion quite kind to have kept the cost of DF membership so low. I'm not saying that y'all ought to tack more fees (I.e.vent costs) onto the bill (frankly I think that sort of thing ought to be mandatory and paid by all annually, but that's not my call), but I am saying NOBODY ought to take for granted the very tangible benefits of being in DF, even above booze at the meetup, have netted you.
20 bucks for 2 meals, beer, and taxi service: If that's too much for you, you a) probably need to go on more dates, or b) perhaps need to reevaluate whether this is the sort of thing you should be spending future monies on.
we do use a chip in widgit on
Grasen — Sat, 08/07/2010 - 17:37we do use a chip in widgit on the site for vent, speaking of I think I will be picking up the new vent server on the 15th of this mo. can we git the chipin thing up right after the meetup G? I'll cover the initial costs to git it rollin on the 15th. but i;d love to git some of that back.
Yeah, I've donated before and
Scaron — Sat, 08/07/2010 - 19:41Yeah, I've donated before and I'd be happy to do so again. I may not be right, but if I remember correctly, the chip-in widget seems to often have about 4 large donors (I'm not a large donor, but I've noticed that about 5 or so donations get us to our annual vent fees, meaning that somebody is footing the bill...that or the chip in widget doesn't track donators accurately.)
So I'm really late to this
Ewiges — Tue, 08/17/2010 - 21:59So I'm really late to this thread but I really like it. I'm going to be like one of those financial bloggers and list other activities you can do for $35.
Dinner for 2 at a cheap restruant.
Go to the theater to see a movie with a guest on a Saturday night (no candy).
Get half a tank of gas and not have money to spend on stuff once you drive there.
Go to the fair for one night. Cost includes one item of food and one attraction.
Buy fastfood dinner and a 12 pack of beer.
So yeah, thats all I can think of off the top of my head, not very great...
Um wow I didn't realize
Elapsed — Mon, 08/02/2010 - 09:59Um wow
I didn't realize people were having issue with the fee, it's really shocking how low it is. I was expecting $50 a piece easy. My problem was trying to get use of someone's debit card to make the transaction. instead I just got a prepaid visa from work and took care of it. I appreciate everything you folks are doing to organize the meetup and can't wait for it.
oh and G you wont be giving me a wedgie... Craig however should be an easy target

Derchlon — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 22:10I'm sad that this is even an issue.
In case you missed it...
Saja — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 21:52This equals $34 per person.
A note on the meetup's funding - $35 is a steal, folks
Shihli — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 21:11Here's the breakdown I did in my head. tl;dr version - it's a fucking steal.
$35 buys you food for 3 days, booze, and a T-shirt. Let's break that down.
As Garreth said above, $15 buys you the shirt alone. A custom-made Downfall T-shirt that you won't find in a store.
That leaves $20, from you, for food for 3 days and some booze. Let's pretend that you drink 2 beers on Friday and Saturday. A six-pack costs, on average, about $8. So your 4 beers will run you about $5.
That leaves $15 for food for three days. Presumably, this means lunch and dinner for those days, as if you're like me, you don't eat breakfast. $5 a day for two meals means $2.50 a meal. That's a steal.
Even if we assume that the T-shirt was as cheap as $5, that means $30 for three days of food and booze, which - given the above breakdown, is $25 for food for 3 days, or about $4 a meal. Again, a steal.
I understand that I've played my part in making the preparation for the meet-up a bit of hell for Saja and the others on the committee. I'm a person that likes to know things well in advance and for my personal liking, it might have taken a bit long to work things out. But if people are complaining about the PRICE? $35 is a damned steal, and if you're among those complaining about it ... well, that's your problem. Don't make it theirs.
Well I am new but......
Maltoheals — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 21:53Well I am new but......
I thought it was a great deal and would not miss it and to be honest.... I scheduled and did this for my guild for 3 years and I can tell you from experience ....... It's a crazy amount of work to put something like this together .....
That goes way beyond the fee which I must say covers a lot...... My two cents and I will be there (although I have to rent a hotel room --- only because I will have my daughter with me and she wants to go school shopping lol).......
And that brings me to one other request.... How do I get to your house for Friday night (I will be leaving somewhat late in the afternoon from the Tacoma area (I work in Kirkland and will try to get that day to be a work from home day) nevertheless message me on the site or email me at today14u at comcast dot net....... Thanks and see ya in a couple weeks lol
I will message u when I get
Saja — Mon, 08/02/2010 - 10:07I will message u when I get home. On my phone
Cool
Maltoheals — Mon, 08/02/2010 - 10:40Cool ...... Thanks
Also
Agoney — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 20:48I'm unable to attend the event again this year, but I want to add one more point, and I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds..
$35 isn't even the price for ONE (1) night at a hotel. Your getting food/drinks/shirt/setup all included for 2-3 days/nights (not to mention people are opening their homes and letting people stay there). Did people honestly expect everything for free??
