The Chronicles of Tuque
saedo — Sun, 03/02/2008 - 06:03
Well, I rolled a pally alt. So thought I'd make a pally blog! All about the trials and tribulations that turn up as this dps class tries to level a non-dps (sorta) class.
Day 1 (Level 11):
So, created it as Draenei. First thing I got was this Seal of Righteousness. Dang this is a bit disappointing as a yellow attack. lol Basically just auto attacking and it adds a bit more holy damage on top of it.
Couple levels later I get this Seal of Crusader. Hmm, AP and attack speed boost but lowers damage... I'm thinking this is prob better for slow 2 handers? While SoR could be better for those faster one handers.
So grinding on mobs, this is the cycle I come up with. SoC, Judgement, SoR, Judge, repeat SoR. That any good? Crusader to boost holy damage so more dmg from SoR.
Anyways, have to put in talent points now. Where to put those first points? And what would be the spec to level with? I assume ret for better solo grinding. Though that could defeat the whole purpose of this experience. lol Insane to jump into holy? Or maybe start prot? Or some mix with all 3 trees?
Day 2 (Level 15):
So I spec'd down the Holy tree. Doesn't seem that interesting yet, nothing really helping my healing so far. Ya 10% more int, but at this level it's like 2 more int. lol
Speaking of int, so what exactly is healing gear at this level? So far all the quest mail armor pretty much has stam and str, guess good for the tanking/dps portions. Only int could help with the mana pool but I've only seen cloth having it so far. Should I just be wearing cloth? Or just wait it out until some real healing gear comes along?
Anyways, next random thought. So I chose the eng/mining as professions. Other stuff didn't seem all that interesting. Only a couple of usable bop gems in JC, nothing really in BS, def not LW, already got alc, enchanting seems like a pain. Guess could've worth clothie stuff as tailor but nah. So eng for the helms, flying mounts, mote extractor, and a few toys.
Day 3 (Level 19):
My first respec! I went prot. I was a bit afraid that if I went ret I'd never come back. lol But I think this is a pretty logical choice for this level. Got my rightous fury, that pally taunt, ret aura, spiritual attunement, mail gear with stam and str, etc. Versus, um, 3 ranks of holy light and no healing gear. lol Well I have noticed my killing power going down, but that could just be me switching from 2 Hander to sword and board to take advantage of the shield block thing. For a while I thought I was taking more damage too, but I realized I was just killing more caster mobs today, and I can't block their firey balls of death. lol
So I've messed with Grid too. Made it more "healer friendly". The thing is bigger and brighter so I can actually see the bars and numbers. Also made that mouseover purify macro and it was pretty hax. Though I was the only target, spam it and it cleanses without missing a beat.
Another proud note is that I've almost maxed enginerring. Well, as high as I can get. Need to be level 20 to train more. Lots and lots of copper around. Either they upped the nodes since the last time I've leveled, or the Draenei areas get a fuckton of em, or maybe both.
And so, I end the day with my crowning achievement... Soloing Razormaw, a level 20 elite dragon. Go prot pally!
Day 9 (Level 24)
Haha so it's been a while since I got something and haven't really done much. My excuses are that it is a pally I'm leveling and have been a bit busy to play around.
So I got to tank a VC run. Kinda typical lowbie 5 man. FFA dps everything til they died. In the end, only 4 manned it due to a d/c or something that never came back.
Anyways, there is my curiosity of how to tank. So for most trash, I'm thinking I just start of with a Judgement of Righteousness, seems to be the only thing to start dmg for aggro with. I'm not sure how much threat Judgement of Crusader, if any, causes, but prob for longer boss fights I'd put that up.
Concecrate seems like a mana hog at this level, and not enough to AoE tank yet...
Another thing, fresh off the trainer got Seal of Justice. Haven't played with it yet but sounds interesting. Would it be of any use with mobs that try to run? Though would this be a threat generator?
Day 13 (Level 28)
So, last night I got to tank a BFD run in a somewhat odd group. Me and 4 shamans. As a pally tank there's defintely more downtime than a rage based tank (did lvl a warrior before). I was pretty quick to oom after each pull. Guess without access to judgement of wisdom yet nor having a dedicated chain spam healer on me would do that.
So to get around it, I started to just tank with without judging, just seal of righteousness. Surprisingly it worked, well when others had salv, I did the pull, and they were actually dps'ing the target I was on. Didn't think it would've generated enough threat at first. But if one of them did pull, taunt, judge, re-seal to get it all back. This kinda made it easier than warrior tanking since it was mostly auto-attacking rather than the sunder/heroic strike (back at this level) spamming. lol
Also, a couple of days ago I stepped into WSG. It was the daily, was hoping to get the uber 12g and 400ish honor, but turns out they were smart enough to lower to like 77s and 77 honor for this level, oh well. lol Anyways, alliance loses of course, and I was def one of the noobs that helped that along. lol Some were screaming for me to heal em and I really had no fuckin clue what to do. lol Wasn't watching health bars, ppl running out of range, getting jumped by twinks, etc. Well, I guess pvp healing is a bit a diff ballpark than pve healing anyways.
Well the experience also made me realize my UI is still inadequate for it. I did set my rogue up with my pally in mind, with a sorta unified UI for all alts so general "bread and butter" stuff are all in the same area. I thought putting grid in my bottom right would be fine since my mouse kinda generally gravitates to that area. Now I kinda realize my eyes just don't do the same. lol I tend to focus on the left and center sides of the screen. Prob also need to set up grid so out of range ppl are more noticable.
Hmm, you know what I want grid to do, well no clue of it exists or if it's even possible. Using arrow keys (or whatever hotkeys) to change targets. Like using up and down to target diff ppl in groups. Heh, dunno if mouse would be even faster but meh, one handed healing? lol
Day 16 (Level 30)
So, I got to do a Gnomer with a more um, balanced group. Only really mana/tanking prob was that the I suppose well geared shaman alt was into power pulling zerg the damn place down. I think I prob need to turn on that Tankalyze mod and hae it yell stuff when I taunt. Need to think of those battle cries now. lol
Anyways, another thing is that I only just started to quest in Duskwood. Didn't think I'd have to go there, went Wetlands for my 20s but that only got me to 27 before I finished all the quests there. Interestingly enough, each time I stepped foot in that zone, I get ganked by some ?? horde. lol Except this one time! A BE pally was chasing me, he aggro'd NPCs I kept running. Bubbled, kept running. He mounted to chase me down but I hammer of justice him just as soon as he got in range. It actually hit. lol Guess he might not have been 70 but either way a very lucky non-resist. I of course kept running and lost him, or he just gave up after that. lol
Day 22 (Level 35)
So a couple days ago I kinda got into a crappy SM Armory group. No healers. Or maybe no tanks. Wasn't sure what they expected me to do. lol 2 rogues a lock and a hunter for the others. I tried to tank a bit, but meh, had to heal myself of course. I tried to heal and let the pets tank. It was kinda interesting, watching other ppl's bars often made me forget to look at my own's even when mobs were beating on me. lol Aggro was a bitch, 1 heal would pretty much pull em all on to me. I even tried only salving myself and giving the others some other buff. lol Anyways, needless to say, we didn't get far, respawns were fast, and we were outta there! lol
Another interesting thing happened. So I was questing in Dustwallow, neat new quests there now. I went afk for a quick bio and when I came back I found a level 41 BE rogue beating on me. Was at about 40% health at the time, so I just bubbled, ran healed. But, I wasn't one to just run away, I stopped to let him catch up and we proceeded our battle. We'd beat on each other, I'd hammer and heal, BoP and heal, he'd be beating on me trying to stun and mana tap arcane torrent. 4 mins later he finally killed me, and only got him to about 18%. lol I needz more pvp experience! lol

Dragon — Thu, 03/06/2008 - 10:46You will go ret my son. You will be infected by the Curse of Dragonspear and will acknowledge the path of retribution.
Side note, my first paladin I leveled holy 47 outta the 60 levels (early '06) and played a little with ret. As such, I burned myself out early on holy :(
As far as rets gear dependence, yes unfortunately it is. At lower levels its just getting the slowest, hardest hitting 2her you can, by the time you get to outlands though it is a little worse. Warrior gear is what you pick up if you level ret, and you cheer when you can get an extra piece of gear with it on it.
No matter what spec you level though, Judgement and Blessing of Wisdom are your friends as soon as you get them :D

Leveling as Prot with
khilmona (not verified) — Thu, 03/06/2008 - 09:58Leveling as Prot with Colith(30-66), I found a few horrible truthes. Caster mobs == dead pally.
Pulling 3-5 equal level mobs popping rank 1 or 2 consecrate and then auto attacking them was faster than killing those same 5 mobs 1 on 1. IE; it took me 60 secs to kill 1 gorrilla in Un'Goro and it took 90 secs to kill 4 in 1 pull.
When you have a minute or so of auto attack you have loads of time to do whatever. Plenty of times I would SoW>judge>SoL>grab a cup of coffee>sandwich>visit the lou>loot
The rank 1-2 consecrate is for tagging the mob without blowing your mana. Reflected dmg doesn't tag the mob.

saedo — Tue, 03/04/2008 - 02:43Hmm 2nd page atm for the tracker. Would I have to shamelessly bump this for ppl to notice updates? lol
Anyways, quick summary, I went prot, avoiding temptations of the dps for now. lol
You won't see any "healing
garreth — Mon, 03/03/2008 - 11:25You won't see any "healing specific" items for many levels. Basically, just stay ret until the 40-60s. Don't even bother being much holy, except for the 70% resistance to spell interrupt, until much later where the healing really matters.
From my experiance...
Grovinski — Mon, 03/03/2008 - 11:20From my experiance... leveling as prot made grinding really easy, it's long, but you end up killing 4-5 mobs at a time so it evens out. Plus you never die :-p

Dufe — Sun, 03/02/2008 - 12:52My pally is lvl 32. I started leveling as holy, but switched recently to a heavier ret spec and I now kill things roughly 50% faster. That is the same seal cycle I've been using, but I can't confirm that its the best.
pally leveling = auto attack
Frollo — Sun, 03/02/2008 - 12:16pally leveling = auto attack stun bot not quite as entertaining as other things, forces you to almost go heal spec for endgame imo (level 41 pally)

Aidin — Sun, 03/02/2008 - 09:57Tough call. I leveled Holy...but then again I had a hunter pet that killed shit for me ...lol.
I have noticed that in the later stages of the game..I did JUST as much damage holy specced as I did Ret spec'ed. Ret is so darn gear dependant. It takes longer to kill things...but you CAN kill things holy...I'm just not so sure about the early solo lvls as I was never really solo I had mah pet!
