Things that <Downfall> taught me.
Shihli — Thu, 04/28/2011 - 16:29
So I was thinking today about something I was told during my employee review earlier this year. I was told that I was good at communicating my thoughts clearly, and that I was good at talking to people of varying skill levels about technical details and such. I was also told that I had a "calming" voice and was easy to approach, and that I had a tone that made me sound "more experienced than I may be" - which come to think of it, may not always be a positive.
The whole reason I bring that all up is because I learned it from interacting with members of <Downfall> and from my experience as a raid leader, raid member, recruiter, and pseudo-sit-in-guild-leader-for-a-time.
I know I'm not the most beloved of <Downfall> members. Loads of you have an opinion of me as being an asshole, an uncaring unwavering jerk that took the game too seriously, and in some cases an intolerable person to be around. Others formed a different opinion. To each their own, and I can't really go out of my way to prove myself one way or another. But I can say that communicating with people whose opinions of me ran the gamut of possibilities really expanded on my ability to actually communicate effectively.
Although my experience in WoW didn't end on a good note - and my last couple of years may have actually helped lead to me losing my previous job - the whole of the experience was positive. My lead raidership actually helped land me a job out of college (in an indirect manner), and the communication skills I picked up from trying to organize so many people helped me to gain recognition in my current job. In 6 months I've moved from an entry-level-ish intern position, to a full-benefits employee in a little bit of a supervisory position. I've helped more than a handful of new engineers get on their feet.
So long story short, whether you remember me fondly or remember me as an overbearing asshole, I wanted to say thank you for helping me to learn how to talk to people in a professional setting.

I've always thought and felt
chaca — Tue, 08/30/2011 - 19:27I've always thought and felt that WoW is more than just a game... It's helped me be better a setting up strategies at my current job. It's also helped me keep my english skills up and running, and that gives me a cutting edge amog a lot of good people in my country.
I thank you guys for that too, and I thank you Shihli for giving me the opportunity to enter this great community (I feel you had a lot to do with me getting the pass to join in).
I'm glad is going well for you and it's a pitty we couldn't find the time to meet in seattle during this summer.
Where the hell is the like

Everyone knows me and you had
Grasen — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 10:20Everyone knows me and you had our bad times but we had some good times also. I miss the nights of hunter chat. Glad to hear you are doing well, Quitting raiding has done well for me also. PvP allows for much more IRL time while still being able to enjoy the game. Wish you were here to smash some horde sometimes though. We had some great wars back when world pvp actually happened.
I never new you as anything
Maltoheals — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 08:00I never new you as anything but Shihli......
I missed the "Asshole" days.... But do know that things don't always translate well thru the internet and also know from my own experience the amount of work and dedication that goes into organizing "Fun" for a group of people....
So I would say for all your "Assholeness" you probably enabled a lot of fun and memories in a game for a lot of people and having that impact on peoples leisure time is priceless and I can say gives you a special place in the memories of many.....
I lift my cup in a toast to your "Assholeness"
Much Respect my friend
I fondly miss your overbearing assholeishness....
Netti — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 01:51you have to be overbearing and an asshole sometimes. Glad to hear things on the job front are going well...and say hello to Alli.

Hi Nett :)
Allikat — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 09:17Hi Nett :)
With you and alli gone there
cromi — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 09:24With you and alli gone there is noone to correct my flawed logic. So I go off on tangents about nothing. Like right now.
I liked this post. The "calming voice" part kind of scared me. But I know that whenever you were off doing that "asshole" thing, you were pushing people to do better. And honestly a good leader should always be pushing til their subjects call them assholes. In that sense. Asshole is a term of endearment.

Atakheal — Sat, 04/30/2011 - 10:27Cool story, <3 Shihli
cool story bro
poisondonut — Fri, 04/29/2011 - 13:11I have to say, even when I hated you I liked you. It's part of the dynamic of any situation where people have a leader/manager etc that no matter how good/ nice/fair that person is, someone will always have a gripe or feel shortchanged/ignored. I never had issues with you, and people who did probably had poor social skills and or raged way too much for their own good. Raiding was always a good time, even when I disagreed with you, it was only because I truly despised you as a person, and not temporarily for that one particular decision. Grats on all the good nuuuse, sounds fantastic.
