Hi guys,
Im trying to do a little primary first hand research on Star Wars and/or Blade and Soul.
If you've played either game in CBT, would greatly greatly appreciate it if you could drop me a line on forums. Would love to take your pulse on them.
Many thanks!
Kwondre

Enixa — Mon, 07/04/2011 - 14:03Of the classes in beta, what have you played and which do you enjoy most? Im definetely going to be playing this but I can't get into Beta just yet (in Italy currently) so I wanna todo a bit of research and the classes you'd recommend. So far I'm leaning toward Sage or Juggernaut. Holla at me
What about the space combat?

Space combat is what they
Rescue Toaster — Sat, 07/02/2011 - 20:10Space combat is what they call "fly on rails" where your space craft cruises through a pre-determined path. If you played Starfox, you'll know what this feels like. Don't be fooled though cause some of these missions are brutally tough which is why they are not required as part of your storyline.
They are repeatable and give a good amount of experience but for me these missions aren't so amazingly fun to play that I'd do them over and over again. These missions also don't contribute any to the story and since I play to enjoy the storyline I am not so apt to do many of these space combat things.
Visually though it is intense. Flying through an asteroid belt, lasers flying and things exploding all around you is great.

Mehguy — Thu, 06/30/2011 - 18:03This sounds amazing. Ive been really curious about how this game would turn out, and I'll definately be picking it up now.
While Im 100% certain it wont lure me away from WoW or replace it for that matter, I think itll definately be something I pick up to kill off some of my boredom as compared to flying circles in SW.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Rescue Toaster — Thu, 06/30/2011 - 12:41I don't want to give you very many specific details as per my agreement with BioWare to keep a certain level of confidentiality and also I don't want to spoil the game either.
COMBAT
First off: the combat system is identical to World of Warcraft. You have X number of abilities, global and internal cooldowns, and buffs. Tagetting is identical too with TAB. However, the biggest change is the visuals of fighting. In WoW if a player is attacking an elite mob (or anything rather) both models are combat static. What I mean by this is if a creature blocks, dodges, parries, or gets hit we are only aware of this by a floating text reminder and sound effect. In SWTOR if something dodges a lightsaber swing, they lean back and the weapon misses, or they lean to a side for something like a stab. If a block happens,, the lightsabers clash in a brilliant flash of light. Parries are alos different as the creature retaliates immediately which is a free attack. You can also block from behind and reflect or absorb laser shots.
Fighting is VERY visually appealing and engaging. I get sucked into the movie-like action easily and thoroughly enjoy it.
MIRRORED CLASSES
Some people are bothered by this. There are "8" classes; four for each faction; of which each side has a mirrored type. The Jedi Knight = Sith Warror; Jedi Couselor = Sith Inquisitor; Smuggler = Imperial Agent; Republic Trooper = Bounty Hunter. That may seem limited but this is the vanilla game so I don't expect immense diversity.
STORY DRIVEN GAME
Classic to BioWare this game is very very very much about story. The ones I've played so far were (for the most part) engaging and fun. The choices given for Light Side or Dark Side are equally good. This stuff is constantly changing and for the better so who knows what the final version will be like.
So while there are limited classes to choose from the stories are the major drawing point. Each one unique and making me want to play them all. Sadly, the choices you make only impact reactions from quest givers and don't actually influence options down the road.
For example: If I had a choice to either blow up a rebel weapons facility on Tatooine or slice (hack) it's information networks and retrieve the data for The Empire and I chose to blow it up, I only get a regrettable thank you from the Imperial officer and nothing is ever heard from that again. When I go to Hoth I would like my actions to change a mission I would have there and the quest giver would respond to my action on Tatooine like, "that mission you carried out on Tatooine was done hastily and proved costly to the Empire. I cannot allow you to jeapordize Operation: Snatch the Batch with your recklessness so I will deploy you as a distraction to peel rebel forces away from their base while our agents infiltrate and capture the vital resources."
Though my actions don't influence the game as such I'm not disheartened at all. I am just an extremely demanding person when I'm allowed to make "influential" choices in a game.
PROFESSIONS AND SUCH
Okay. Easily one of the greatest improvements from WoW in my opinion. You're the badass hero. You don't spend your time weaving tapestries to sell on the AH to fund your engine of war. Nope! You acquire companions (5 in total) who can get up to 3 crew skills and THEY do the work for you.
There are 3 types of professions: gathering, crafting, and missions. You know what gathering and crafting ones are like so I'll talk about missions. Those are simple. Basically you send your companion(s) on a mission and after X amount of time they return either successful or unsuccessful. If successful, they reward you with materials, weapons, etc. Gathering and crafting also have missions. Why are mission-based skills worthwhile then? Well, diplomacy gives you stuff plus lightside or darkside points. No gathering or crafting skill gives lightside or darkside points.
If you have a gathering skill, you will see materials to gather on the mini-map just like in WoW. But as the hero you can choose to gather it yourself or instruct a companion to go and get it.
As you level up skills you get higher level items to craft and missions to carry out. These will take longer to do. I had a level 200 diplomacy mission and it took 20 minutes to complete. Don't fret cause you can send your companion(s) on these missions and logoff and they'll work on it while you sleep, eat, poop, whatever. You can even manage this stuff while in Flashpoints (WoW dungeon equivalent), doing quests, pvp'ing, etc.
It's a great interface. I love it.
PVP
PvP is fun. Period. Really fun. No BS racials to deal with. Nothing's really "OP" yet. It's all fun despite the horrible lag.
Glad to hear about this resq.
Dragon — Fri, 07/01/2011 - 14:30Glad to hear about this resq. It seems like the more I read about it the more confidence I have in it, which I'll be honest, I had lost all confidence around March or April but E3 and this post are giving me some hope.

Enixa — Thu, 06/30/2011 - 13:57Resq, thank you. During my hiatus from video games due to my old raid falling apart and my moving to Italy, Ive had no video games to play aside from Mario Kart 64 emu. That being said, I posted on FB looking for the 'next' mmo to get into. I looked through the SWTOR website today and it looks like it might be something easy enough to immerse into.
Hearing your input is perfect, a similar wow system for the SW nerd that I am. Thank you! Looking forward to getting back into the states and hopefully jumping into beta.
