Rnprk — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 20:01I do have a few addons. DBM, Recount, Healbot(which I haven't played around with that much) and a couple others that don't pertain to priest raiding.
I do have fun in Normal raiding depending on the group, but it has been all pugs and after 1-3 wipes the group disappears. Or yes I have been kicked for one mistake plenty of times from those groups. And I'll make plenty more in the future, just like everyone else. I am very willing to wipe a ton of times if that's what it takes to get through things. That's what I want. The other thing that makes it tough is that it seems like every group I get in has a different idea of how things are done. Some consistancy would be nice. And I'm totally fine with other people making mistakes. It really isn't the end of the world. You walk back real quick if you don't have a rez and pay some gold and try again. Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely laid back. I do have some drive. But I also try to keep things in perspective.
I do enjoy PVP as well and have full prideful gear on my monk and shadow and healing sets on my priest.
As far as other specs go I don't like holy and it seems incredibly weak in PVE. Shadow in MoP is garbage for PVP in my opinion, and the single target PVE damage being extremely underwhelming is well known. I use shadow for doing quests or whatever mostly. I do not plan to raid as dps though. You never know, I might like holy in WoD. I will certainly try all 3 specs of course.
Yes Painhax, English is indeed my first language.
Welcome to the app
Elapsed — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 18:54Welcome to the app process!
I like to leave the priest stuff to our resident priests, but I have a few questions about your app. Also now, handily your armory has me asking a question!
1) You aren't finding much fun in normal healing? I think the most fun we healers have in normal is Thok or Siegecrafter (when things start to get hairy in progression.)
2) Looks like whomever you're raiding with benched you for Malk (which raids are want to do given disc's inadequacy on that fight when compared to any other healer) But also for Thok. The thok benching confuses me, because Disc's absorbs and CD's make that fight much less chaotic and spiky. This is presuming you're raiding with a consistent group and you're not just getting in on pugs on random bosses of course.
3) Just as much as raiders make mistakes, Raid leaders can often over-reach with their backlash over the mistakes, which is a mistake (of course presuming the leader isn't also making them lol.) Do you have a tolerance for that? Do you grant people the benefit of the doubt when you're 50+ pulls into a boss that night and everyone is a little on edge?
4) Spartan UIs often point to a PvPer. Are you into that? Were starting some RBG groups and an Ashran group in WoD.
5) If no, then why do you enjoy your UI like that? So many addons, when used properly make big quality of life changes. From being able to see more of the floor beneath your feet, to being able to more quickly identify what the debuff on the target is and issue a proper response.
I look forward to the next couple of days, getting to know a bit more about you.
Hello! First things first. I
Painhax — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 17:48Hello!
First things first. I cannot find you on the armory http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/Alterac+Mountains/Kilani/simple
Is English your first language?
Since I can't find your armory I would like to know a bit about your character -sp, crit, haste, mastery- and what talents and glyphs you use.
Do you use mouseover macros at all?
What addons if any do you use?
How far are you progression wise? and have you found yourself going holy or shadow for any reason...do you like any other spec or know them?
You say you want gear..we all want gear.. and we all work together as a guild to get it but in that we play and enjoy each others companies and carry our own weight. This is a very important bit.
I ask all of this because if you want to raid seriously it helps as a group AND you to know what we are working with and what you need.
Yes I will "criticize" moreover, I will tell you from MY OPINION and knowledge, what is best to use, and I would want someone better than me to do the same...so I can improve. But to improve you MUST NOT be stuck in your ways.
Why don't you want to tell us about yourself?
I'll add more later but here is a link to my armory real quick

Alright, everyone please.
Elapsed — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 13:35Alright, everyone please. This app is now only open to officers to reply. We clearly got off on the wrong foot with Kilani#2 and need to give him a fair shot. This isn't standard protocal, I'm aware, but after chatting with everyone I think it's best to mulligan and try again. Later, when I have more time I'll post some questions I have. I hope to see some other officers here too
WHAT?!?! what just happened?
Elapsed — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 09:06WHAT?!?! what just happened? I look away for an evening and we have an app go up, and down?
Let's try and restart this here, because I feel while first impressions count, the internet all needs a second impression before dismissing it. Also I'm in a great mood as it's not looking to be a bajillion degrees today and I'm just getting started on my first coffee of the morning.
Hi, welcome to the downfall recruitment process! I'm Elapsed GM of the guild and it seems others have started off without me, as they are want to do being my officers.
A couple of notes to how this works, because while it's spelled out on the front page of the app, it's buried under a bunch of crap that we need to edit (and are actively discussing now in the officer forums.) The app process, although taken to an extreme sometimes due to passion, is to get an idea of a couple of things.
1) How you answer questions, and reply to critques.
We are first and foremost a community of friends. I know a considerable ammount of guildies in real life, and anyone we recruit is generally someone I'd like to meet (I'm both using the personal I and the royal I there.) So no, while it's not a 6 figure job, it does tend to lean towards a "jobby" feeling. Something were discussing and getting ready for 6.0 and WoD, trust me on this.
2) Do you actually know how to critically think about how the game works?
I don't care if you've gemmed everything wrong, don't or do use some ability, or are accidentally wearing your PvP trinket as you logged out. We can help teach those things. But if you can't answer questions that critically look at how the game works, how haste BPs work, etc etc, then you're probably not going to be a raider with us. That doesn't mean we don't want you along for the ride as a casual member! But it's very important we get to know you!
So that's why the app is the way it is, yes we will be changing it for WoD and trying to make this more upbeat and less "TBC/WRATH top 50 US raid guild", because.... we're not. I cannot speak to your dealings in game with Hax, and Shatner. But one thing I will say, Painhax is easily one of the most passionate players of the game I know. He undoubtedly got very excited to talk shop with another disc priest and offer tips. Because of the inadequacys of chat it could have come off in the wrong context (more of a taskmaster telling you what's what.) To that I only say, be glad you're not a holy pally! I'm super clingy and would be chatting you up over every minor beta note to discuss!
Jackburton (I also enjoy typing that name for some reason) Had a great app! (give it a look) took a couple of days of people asking questions and then me hopping onto mumble with him and a couple of officers to hear his voice and what a great guy he was. I invited him, not seeing him raid at all. I recommended the raid for him and had him sign up asap and talk to their leader. Then we ran a Flex wing 3 with him and his friend Stankylips.
First impressions, they matter. Ours here was poor. Not saying you couldn't be a bit more light hearted about things in your app. But given where this has all gone I don't feel the need to actually talk about the app answers. Let's try this again, if you're willing, to start your app off on the right foot for both of us. We're not horrible cubicle task masters, some of us are just so damn passionate about our classes/specs that we need new people to talk to about them!
OH! I did have one question, since we already have a Kilani in guild. What does your name mean? What's the origin? I was thinking your priest the other day was one of her many many alts! I'm taken back to see that was a wrong assumption.

I looked at the gear,
Painhax — Sun, 09/21/2014 - 23:12I looked at the gear, talents, glyphs and asked questions in game about the app.
Gear is standard trying to start out into raids and I realize people have to start somewhere so no biggy. Can't locate him on the armory at the moment but I asked about spirit and haste. Spirit about 10k and haste 4k.. looks good.
Talents/glyphs told me how he used glyph of renew for dungeons.. I explained that their is no reason to ever use renew as disc... I was as nice as I could be because I do enjoy helping people and I do know what works. Was just brushed off. Has glyph of penance good and the other glyph is pom..smeh.. I told him the less dmg he takes the more he heals. Talents he seems to have a knowledge of but I can't say for sure.
UI. I said standard ui huh. He said yes. I asked if he used mouse overs or was familiar with weak auras and told me he didn't enjoy almost any addon and didn't like many things in general. No answer on either but both are huge in a raiding environment.
Didn't seem to like me asking questions. I explained I do like helping and not criticizing.
Most importantly he wants a place to raid and have a good environment but was short and told me that he was tired of the questions so he didn't fill out the tell us about yourself part... and that is the part I like the most and I ended my questions there.
Other than that it could be a trial basis and go from there and see if he is willing to learn and be more open and less "tired" of this.
Says Jackburton is sort of known but also turned around and said he wasnt sure why we would take him as he hardly raids and he does.
Sean was in the conversation with me observing. Didn't say anything.
I'm not quite sure I've ever
Shatner — Sun, 09/21/2014 - 23:48I'm not quite sure I've ever seen anyone so disinterested in joining a guild. I spent an additional 20 minutes soft-balling questions to no effect. It's apparent there's not a strong desire to join Downfall. One word or one sentence responses to multiple questions. In return, zero questions about joining the guild until pressed into asking them. The worst of the conversation occured when I was suddenly challenged as to why we invited Jackburton and not the applicant; no one one had said anything about the applicant being denied entry into the guild. This is not a good fit.
agreed
Mehguy — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 00:15In general I wasn't too keen on a few questions that just seemed skimmed over. I usually don't like it when I see that people "want gear". Yea, everyone wants gear, but you should be looking more for community, the experience and having a good time. Gear comes with the territory. To ME, seeing someone say they want gear shows where their priority is.
"I have no idea" when it comes to how long you plan to be in the guild if invited. Ill give you that one since you are being honest. No one really has no idea how long they will be in a guild, but its usually best to put a better foot forward on this question so we get a good feeling that you WANT to be here. Saying you have no idea doesn't give a great feeling for most. Combine this with the next question where you answer "unfair loot distribution" could cause you to leave can give us the impression if you don't like how the loot council decides one piece of loot (potentially) that you will just say "Fuck it" and leave because you felt you deserved it more.
From Painhax's comments, I can get people don't want to overload on add-ons... that's fine, that's a personal preference, but each raid is going to have some mandatory add-ons you have to have. Add-ons have proven to be extremely beneficial, some almost are required, to make you the best you can at your class. Not being willing to try out add-ons doesnt show open-mindedness to try to make yourself a better player, which can result in you hurting the raid/group you are in more than helping it.
Brushing off Painhax when he was trying to help and ask questions about your talents/glyphs because he is curious and also trying to shed some light onto some things that could help you out? Definite no-no. To me it sounds like you are too set in your ways, even though you pretty much said, in so many words, that you werent opposed to constructive criticism. Also, you are applying to the top guild on the cluster and don't expect to have your talents/glyphs/etc inquired about or discussed? I'm curious if you expected this application to be nothing more than a formality and you would be invited right away. No, thats not how it goes with our guild.
Also, you criticized us for inviting someone (Jackburton) because he doesn't raid as much as you?? GG guy, criticize the guild you are trying to get into.
I'd rather turn invite someone who we have a better application experience with and has the attitude/willingness to learn and adapt, even if they might not be the greatest player, compared to the one who shows your kind of attitude to an application process. This may be "a game", but this is something that we take seriously, and we expect anyone who applies to do the same.
About the Jack thing etc
Rnprk — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 01:17I did not mean that Jackburton shouldn't be part of your guild. He's a very good player, and I I was merely asking why it seemed like he just got invited right in and I got whatever that was where Painhax basically is just like well I'm done with you and leaves group abrptly.
I do use addons. Just not addons that change my bars.
The whole glyph and talent thing. I get it that renew is super weak and I don't use it in raids. As far as talents go I think there are a few that are viable and obviously the last tier usually has one that is the best for that particular encounter. So to me it's not soething to focus on unless someone doesn't know what to use.
Anyway, you guys can think what you want from some online form. I'd just like to make it known that I have nothing against Jack. He seems to like it in your guild so that's great.
Kilani, if you're still
Shatner — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 01:33Kilani, if you're still interested in joining, put your best foot forward and show why you'd like to join the guild. No one has even slightly suggested Jackburton (I love writing that name) shouldn't be part of this guild.
Thanks but
Rnprk — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 06:43Not really interested. This is a game. You guys treat this like it's some amazing career opportunity that will pay a few hundred thousand dollars a year. As much as I'm serious about progressing in the next expansion, it really comes down to to it being a game. And games are supposed to be fun. This so far has not been the least bit fun. I've been in guilds years ago that weren't fun. Those didn't require open discussion on a website either. Just a simple application and a talk with with the gm and a few officers. So I can't even imagine what this could end up being like.
Best of luck to you all

Grasen — Mon, 09/22/2014 - 10:55"You guys treat this like it's some amazing career opportunity"
We have held a solid community for close to 10 years now, And while this is not an app for a job, it is an app to become one of us, Many people in guild spend as much time in game as people do at a job. When someone wants to join our guild w like to take the time to make sure they are a good fit.
This app is built for raiders with the personal stuff to discern personality. Honestly, someone could be the best rogue on the server and be a complete ass and we wouldn't want them. On the other side of that coin though, an awesome personality doesn't mean a good raider. So for someone interested in raiding they have to face up to us looking into both sides of that coin.
I dont think it is fair to compare our entry process to other guilds you have been in. You're not in those guilds anymore so that process becomes a bit irrelevant. We want to know more about someone than your going to get from a small voice chat. Theres a reason our community has stayed so strong.
Fact is, an applicant is applying to spend time with us and we consider our time valuable, So I see nothing wrong with having a solid feeling out process to ensure people are a good fit. How someone responds to criticism early in the app process can go a long way.
We are the top guild on our cluster for a reason. We have also stayed together for almost 10 years for a reason. It's up to you to decide if you want to tak the time in the app process to come see what those reasons are. When people join Downfall, They don't leave. Theres a reason for that.
