The state of Gorgonnash and Raid Man Hug
Elapsed — Mon, 04/08/2013 - 12:47
Several years ago during Wrath of The Lich King <Downfall> ran two 25 man raids and countless 10 mans. Back then we had the joy (imo) of having separate raid lockouts. You could take your holy pally and run your elite 10 man and then join up with the others for a 25 man of the same content later that week (or the same days). At the end of WoTLK Blizzard decided it was their job to say how we wanted to raid/play (as they do with every game) and limit us to a shared lockout. This meant if you ran with your elite squad on Tuesday through Icecrown Citadel then when 25 man came around Wednesday that you either were completely screwed or needed an alt that could fill your role. During this time 25 man and 10 man had different loot tables, there was mass benefit to run both if you were a min/maxer. Then Cataclysm came around and they made it so 10s and 25s dropped identical loot. This has all but killed 25 man raiding. <Downfall> attempted a 25 man raid then, they lasted for about a month before breaking into 10 mans due to attendance issues. Cata kept rolling and people had their 10s. We didn't interact much with people outside of our groups. I'll be the first to admit I didn't know ANYONE in a couple of the raids. I would see new names in guild and have no clue who they are or why they were here.
Mists of Pandaria rolled out and two 10 mans had survived the chaos that Cata left us in, Raid PMS and Redd Foxx. We didn't really interact at all but we saw a ton of old guildies return. What we saw most of all though was a plan, a plan that could bring back <Downfall> from a couple of segregated groups, and back to a community of people, friends, and family.
Now that you understand why and how <Downfall> is where it is today, I want you to understand why I believe the 25 man is key to the success of the guild as a whole.
The last couple of weeks Raid Man Hug has had attendance issues to say the very least. When we do all come together (with our brains in and ready to play) we accomplish some pretty damned amazing things. But that's not what we've been getting.
So I'm here for a couple of reasons, one is to do this. When you're looking at planning things in life, if and when you can plan around raid please do, we count on each and every one of you. No I'm by no means saying put all life on hold, that’s a stupid proposition and I would never purpose it. Also come to raid ready to be 110% of what you can be. When we need someone to do a job on a door or something STAND UP! And shout I can do that! And then execute that job as perfectly as you can. Also come educated, come with strats in mind for fights we haven't done. Come with new ideas to purpose! Atar and the rest of us can't be left holding the baton for telling everyone how each should play. You need to know your class! You need to know what addons you have and whether or not they were updated recently, and you need to know how to play.
Raid Man Hug has accomplished a great many things in the past months. Now comes the trials that <Downfall> must face together. We must recruit, we must come to every raid we can, and we must be 110% of who we can be. Only then will we continue to succeed!

saedo — Fri, 04/12/2013 - 19:33Ya know... A thought with name changes. With cross realm the names are already appended with "-servername", they should just create a sort of legacy title or something. e.g. "of Gorgonnash" That'll be shown to mask things more pretty, but the "-servername" shall be used to do the whispers/adds/etc. No forced name change neccessary, every name unique but still looking like as it was on old server.
Good Post Elasped. Downfall
Daisey — Fri, 04/12/2013 - 08:15Good Post Elasped. Downfall is an awesome guild :-) and Blizz really does need to do something for the lower pop realms so we can enjoy the game to the fullest

Blizz needs to do something. This game is amazingly fun when the server is hoppin', I have an alt on KT and it's like the WoW of old over there, tons on the AH, raids going in trade 24/7. WHY WOULDN'T BLIZZARD WANT THE GAME TO BE THAT FUN FOR EVERYONE???

chaca — Mon, 04/08/2013 - 21:44Take raiding as part of your life guys. As Elapsed said, RL comes first with no doubt about it. But think of raid as if you were planning to go to the gym, or play your favorite sport with your friends. If you make it part of your Agenda, you will almost always find time for it... unless there's a birthday or any special ocassion on the day of raid.
Yes I miss raid today, but it was the first miss since 7th of January (the day Man Hug started). Make a room to raid as part of your routine and you won't make the other 24 players wait half hour or more to start the fun they wanna get. Please consider others as teammates.

Elapsed — Mon, 04/08/2013 - 22:55well said Chaca! This is almost like being a league! think of it as being what you're paying for when you pay your $15 a month. Sure you practice on the side (getting mroe gear, doing dailies, running LFR) but this is the meat and potatoes of what you pay for.

FireWire — Tue, 04/09/2013 - 00:10I actually have my availability at work set to anything until 5:30 monday and wednesdays at work(shift work) as well as I usually tell my friends I can't workout/go drinking/hang out from 6-10:30 just so I can be ready for raid(sometimes I log on a bit late, usually when I'm making food). Raiding with DF has been a big part of my life these past 3ish years.

Quick Q: Have you guys done "State of the guild/community" Meetings before? Perhaps on TS or Vent. Having em once a month or two by those in leadership is never a bad idea and continues on the "community building" aspect.

Elapsed — Thu, 04/11/2013 - 17:03we use Mumble of which I was dumb and didn't get you to setup when I invited you. But I have a rather personal day today to deal with. Get Mumble and in the guild info is the mumble info. Ask an officer or someone in guild for help if you need it.
We have many community building things we do, and the officers are always available to talk to and bounce ideas off of. Because of how small the guild has been (as of late with the state of the realm) we havent had a meeting like that. I try to post a forum topic or blog once in awhile to let everyone know how we are. But it's a good idea and it will be in the back of my head the next time we have some issues to discuss.
Also the Guild meetup in Portland on July 19th-21st is our big party we try and hold every year, and is argueably the biggest community building event I've ever been to
