Extending Man Hug Lockout
Atar — Mon, 06/24/2013 - 21:37
Thinking about extending the Man Hug lockout for Wednesday. This would allow us to be right on Iron Qon Wednesday and hopefully get a kill and then more on to Twin Consorts. The con to this plan is that we'd be losing out on nine bosses for loot. You guys tell me what you think. I'll base my thoughts on the posts this gets.

First, I need to apologize. I
Scaron — Wed, 06/26/2013 - 10:57First, I need to apologize. I think I've confused the discussion here by confounding two unrelated issues. The issue Atar was looking for a vote on: Whether to extend this week's lockout for this Wednesday night (tonight) to try to get a few new kills before our week off, and the issue of how best to approach our raid schedule more generally after we return from our 4th of July week off.
I'll make some sort of a post else where to discuss the second issue. It's clearly one that people have valid opinions about on both sides of the fence and I'm glad to see the discussion is being had.
To summarize the collected opinions about whether to extend for TONIGHT however, here's what I'm putting together (please correct me if I'm confusing your opinion about the second issue with the one being discussed in this thread.
A vote to extend means to skip the first 9 bosses of ToT tonight and begin at Iron Qon and see how far we get.
A vote to not extend means to start with a fresh instance tonight and see how far we get.

If I've missed anyone or misrepresented anyone, just chime in. I'm also aware that we're not necessarily operating in a total popular democracy and that our votes may or may not reflect what we end up doing. I'm fine with that.
I've offered much more information about my feelings on the second topic my post addressed than the first. So let me just say this: As far as tonight goes, I think we would stand a strong chance of being 11/12 after tonight if we extend. Of course, it's true that we could wipe all night on Iron Qon and get zero kills this lockout.
I'm sensitive to the gear argument. The more gear we have, the easier it is to kill bosses--this is unequivocally true. However, with regard only to extending today, I'm not sure that I weigh the gear that we'd put onto people's main specs more highly than (I think) the strong possibility of getting two new boss kills tonight. I went back and checked on our raid's loot distribution for the last time we killed the first 6 bosses in one night. On that run we put 11 new pieces of gear onto main spec'd raiders. This is a far cry from saying that we'd be giving up 54 pieces of gear on the raid. While last week was 11 pieces, and MAYBE this week would bea little more, it could also be less.
If we could kill only two new bosses, we would still see 12 pieces (or so) of gear that we've never seen before onto our raid.
I acknowlege that it's a gamble either way, it's just my judgment that it's a funner gamble (new kills rock) with an approximately equal upside (about 12 pieces of main spec gear either way) to take a shot at killing two new bosses tonight.
I confirm. I want to extend.

Ghostess — Wed, 06/26/2013 - 07:10A little late to the discussion since it's Wednsday ;-)
I think not extending is the better route in the long run. As mentioned by others by skipping the first bosses we are passing up the opertunity for alot of loot/tier tokens. Also looking long term imo while Lei Shen is our ultimate goal we need to concentrate on being able to consistantly 1-2 shot Drumu. I f we can 1-2 shot Drumu and make it to Primordius who is a 1 shot we have a killer first night.
For night two we will want to get to the point that Dark Animus is consistantly a 1-2 shot boss which will in turn give us more time on mastering Iron Quon to the point of 1-2 shot on him then roll on twin Consorts. While this takes more paticence in the end we will be rewardrd with more gear/tier tokens and more time on Lei Shen.
Ok the subject of a third night? I think that will have to be a raid wide discussion once we are farming bosses 1-12 weekly and are thinking about heroics.
I have not looked to see what the rumhor mill iis saying about patch 5.4 drop date but at this point do we need to rush the Le Shen kill?
Just want to clarify there
Elapsed — Wed, 06/26/2013 - 10:49Just want to clarify there are 2 full discussions spawned here.
1)should we extend this week since were not raiding next week
2) will this extension need to be a regular thing for progression/ should we raid a 3 day < both are valid options and have pros and cons
on your last note, unless we really struggle on Iron Qon (which It didn't look like we were) we have plenty of time before 5.4 drops (still 2 months out probably)
Clarification
Ghostess — Wed, 06/26/2013 - 11:211. I did not think we should extend this week and loot appears to be a moot point but improving on Durumu is not. I am good either way but trust me my ego is screaming bring on Iron Quon and the Consorts lol
2. I was only speaking about this week but my ramblings looked past this week.

I'd like to see an extension
Insta — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 18:02I'd like to see an extension for this week and see how it goes for other bosses. I know a lot of people still need some gears on previous bosses but having the chance to do new bosses can give us insight on how easy or hard it will be for the raid to kill them. Maybe we should have a poll if a lot of people still need gears from Jinrokh up to Durumu or Primordius and decide if we're gonna have an extension or not. Either way, I'm equally excited if we're gonna extend the raid or not tomorrow.
Keep in mind that we're
Aeolyn — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 15:38Keep in mind that we're breaking first week of July so we're losing 9 or so boss kills to begin with. Opting to lose twice that number on purpose seems like a poor choice to me.
Jobs' vote
Jobs — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 13:40My vote:
Continue with 2 nights per week. Extend lockout and learn new bosses.
Now, in saying that, I am not pushing hardcore for any changes. My main interest is in learning more bosses and finishing the content. Whatever is required to accomplish this, I fully support!
Maybe if a player-by-player or average iLvl was part of the convo, we could more easily visualize how badly we sit on gear. Possibly this is what needs to be brought to the table so we have some level of measure in determining when it is better/worse to focus more on last bosses, which would lower the amount of gear we obtain week-to-week.
Skipping 9 bosses is also an
Aeolyn — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 13:15Skipping 9 bosses is also an enormous Valor loss. 40 valor per kill x 25 players = 1000 valor. Nine bosses = 9000 valor.
I can't speak for everyone but Man Hug is where my lion's share of my weekly Valor gains come from. No bosses = no gear upgrade for that week.
I can understand the notion of wanting to skip the first few bosses. But tossing Primordius and Dark Animus aside strikes me as madness. We've killed them twice ever. Animus tier chests are still very, very precious to the raid.
All we have to do is spend less time on Durumu and Iron Qon will fall. We got the kinks largely worked out on Qon too. Twin Consorts is face roll. We're opting to give up way too much to give ourselves 2 easy bosses and up time on Lei Shen. I don't believe the trade-off is worth it.
Especially when we can realistically go 11/12 with our current schedule / gear / skill no problem so long as we don't burn an hour and a half on Durumu pulls.
From an outsider view, I
Mehguy — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 12:48From an outsider view, I don't think you guys should extend lockout. Yea youll "just kill bosses that youve killed before", you "wont get to Lei Shen", w/e. BUT you guys (from my understanding) are right at that point where you can kill Iron Qon, and Twin Consorts is a joke. Lei Shen is a whole other ball game and gear will assuredly help you more in the long run that going to him right now and letting 9-bosses worth of gear go to waste just to see the last guy.
And who knows what can happen... you have a few important players no-show, or someone cant make it and it makes it so you cant meet dps reqs to get Iron Qon and your week is a complete waste with no progression or loot, and only frustration built up on a boss you know you should have.
Any little bit of gear helps, especially since you guys have only killed Primordius and Dark Animus 2 times now. Thats a tremendous amount of new/fresh gear gone to waste for one week just to see what you can do. If I'm not mistaken, 6 items drop off 25-man bosses. So, if you were to extend and not kill Iron Qon because you dont meet the dps requirements (which can be rough if a lot of people die), then you are potentially wasting 54 pieces of loot total, which could help benefit your raid greatly. And from what I understand from Elapsed, you guys have really only recently began to DE gear a little more consistently. From that I take that there is still that potential for ALL of those 54 pieces of loot to be used immediately.
I guess what I'm trying to say is take the safer route, get all that pretty shiny purples and make your raid better as a whole to better deal with the later encounters. Its only one week, but this early into the later fights, youll want that new Primordius and Dark Animus gear to make life easier. Plus, you guys had some big issues from what I heard on Wed, which set you back. Focus on getting a good fresh run on Wed, push and push, get to/past Durumu and you should be all set to get a good 1 1/2-2 hours on Iron Qon/Twin Consorts if you one shot Durumu/Primordius/Dark Animus. There is time to get it done on a 2 nights a week schedule, but doing 1 lockout over 4 nights/2 weeks is just a waste of gear, especially this early into the late stages of the Tier.
My only concern about that
chaca — Wed, 06/26/2013 - 16:19My only concern about that Mehguy is that pretty soon, maybe 2 more weeks of raid I think, we'll be DEing most of the gear. I think we've pretty mucho come to a pont where we only need Tier Chests, Shoulders and Head, as well as Lei Shen's trinkets. SO pretty soon, we've been focusing Lei Shen as our main goal. This discussion is aimed to when that time comes.
This is where only raiding 2
Elapsed — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 10:14This is where only raiding 2 nights a week comes to bite us in the ass... Time. Scaron is right in that Lei Shen can prove to be another horridon, or it could be a Council for us we wont know till we try.
This one extension is fine and a good idea so people learn the fights, but eventually we will have to fall on one of two sides of a coin.
1) raid a 3rd night
2) extend raid every other week for progression
Right now raid PMS is only progressing because we can deitcate 1 night a week to a heroic boss completely, the fights only get more difficult. Personally I see us shooting ourselves in the foot (gear wise) by doing a 2 week raid clear setup, but if that's what more people want as time comes along then so be it.
Chaca, my only counter point to what you said regarding gear coming and going is that gear = progression, without one you cannot have the other.
I don't see how raiding two
Atar — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 11:03I don't see how raiding two nights a week bites us in the ass. I think we've done an amazing thing with Man Hug. So many people have set their mind on us failing and we've proved them wrong. Proved ME wrong at some points. I'm so proud of what this raid has done and I feel if we added a third night to our raid it'd hurt us more in the long run. We dont' want more burn outs and we don't want scheduling conflicts. Staying on a two night raid schedule is our best option. Also, remember that this is supposed to be a casual raid. I've had to keep reminding myself that many times during our ToT journey. Lets be sure not to forget that.
As for gear and extending. Gear is always a good thing. Upgrades makes bosses die faster, people stay alive easier, and tanks don't get two shot. Do we have the gear right now to kill Lei Shen? I think we do. Would more gear be even better? Sure it would. Will us losing some boss kills per week keep us from killing Lei Shen? I don't think so. The most important thing for us is practice. We need to get to Lei Shen and spend time on him. We'll wipe a lot I'm sure, but that practice time will be worth more than any gear available to us.
We're a couple of weeks away before we have to make this a solid debate. Lets talk about it and weigh the pros and cons that extending will offer to our raid.
Firstly, at no point in my
Elapsed — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 11:26Firstly, at no point in my reply did I ever call into doubt our Raid's ability to kill bosses and make excelent progression. Nor do I think were going to lose people to "burning out" by keeping a 3 night raid schedule
Secondly, you CANNOT say definitively that staying 2 nights is our BEST option at all. Nor could I say going to 3 nights is! Why? because we havent polled our raiders lately.
Thirdly, I find the term casual to mean many different things than you do clearly. Casual generally means they meet up different times in a week, sometime they only raid one night sometimes they raid 2 or 3, but that all depends on when they can all meet up. This by most current WoW definitions is a progression raid. We prove ourselves every week we kill more bosses, meet up at the same times. This may be a "casual" raid for someone who's used to bleeding edge raiding, but for most this is progression.
We're about to hit the last 2 Tier bosses, and I really want to discuss our options. We are at debate time thanks to the time we may possibly need to spend on Lei Shen. After that, we can clear normal in 2 nights easy as long as we start on time and move quickly with very little downtime. But when we come up on hreoics then were going to run into time problems. I think that sure, once we clear normal a couple of weeks and get people some more tier and trinkets that yes we will want to deticate time to heroics.
Please, stop, take a beat, and try to look at this objectively. Both options carry merit but both options also show that 2 nights a week isnt enough to do what we want to continue doing, Kicking new bosses/difficulties asses.
I disagree that two nights (6
Scaron — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 12:00I disagree that two nights (6 hours) a week isn't enough time to continue doing what we want to continue doing. We CAN do that with the simple change of doing a 2 week ToT clear. Whether it's what people desire more or less, well, that's the real question.
We can talk about "what people want to do" all we like, but unless it's a fully-rounded discussion about how people want to be spending their time on WoW, I think it will end up being fruitless. For instance, while many people in our raid want to kill bosses (and I think a Lei-Shen kill is an excellent next goal) many also WANT to do RBGs, many WANT to do Challenge Modes, many others WANT an alt raid. Others still WANT to be with their families, and others really want a 3rd raid night for Man Hug. The thing is: if it's decided to make a switch the balance of "how do I spend my time" is upset.
My goal in making my initial post really wasn't to stir the pot--I really don't want to do that. I'm just trying to figure out how to most efficiently and enjoyably get everybody a Lei Shen kill before the patch drops without changing ANYONE'S schedule. I remember reading the website when Man Hug was forming, and I noted that y'all spent a long time trying to figure out exactly when would work well for people. You made that decision and allowed your raiders to plan around it. In my opinion, it may cause undue disturbance to many raiders (and the leadership responsible for filling a raid 3 nights a week) to change from a 2 to 3 night schedule. Worst case scenario, you spread raiders thin and can't fill a raid that once raided for 2 nights a week consistently for even 1 out of 3 nights. Sure, it's a worst case scenario--but we're always almost 4 raiders away from that scenario coming to fruition.
TL;DR: When I look at this objectively, I disagree that 2 nights a week isn't enough to do what we want to continue doing.

I wasn't saying that to you haha. Was just saying in general. :D
Here are my thoughts: For
Scaron — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 05:01Here are my thoughts: For this week I would vote to extend. I really think we can pretty easily get an Iron Qon kill, we're figuring it out pretty easily and now that everyone has seen it, we just need to stay alive to have the dps to kill it before enrage. Twin Consorts is also quite killable in 1 night, it's much easier than the last 3 fights we've done (prim, DA, and Iron Qon). So that should at least let us see Lei Shen.
After this week, my vote would be that (provided we get at least a 10/12 clear) we begin moving to 2 week ToT clears. So on week one we take a reset and clear "farm" bosses as quickly as possible. After that, we would have time to (most likely) kill a boss or two and then have some really solid time on Lei Shen.
I think Lei Shen will take a while to master, but I think a raid can get demoralized if you head in to wiping on the same boss for weeks on end. Lei Shen is challenging and has the potential to be another Horridon. By doing a one week on farm one week on progression schedule, I think we'll minimize burnout, allow people to keep accumulating gear, and still allow ourselves solid time on Lei Shen.
Now, if we're still working on Lei Shen when we're starting to know that a patch drop is imminent, then maybe we could focus on full time progression until we get a kill. We'll have to see how we feel.
Thats my vote.
I'm chaca and I approve this
chaca — Tue, 06/25/2013 - 06:31I'm chaca and I approve this message!
we'll still have the chance to get tier token loot on 2 bosses if we extend lockout, so that will help our gear improvement as a whole.
Also, it will be frustrating to work our asses off for 2 days and end up having like 20 mins on Lei Shen every week, taking into account that we still have some challenging bosses on our "farm" night (Durumu rings a bell?). Personally, I care a whole lot more on raid progression than on gear improvement. Gear comes and goes all the time, Raid progression stays on our record forever!
