Atar's picture

Atar — Wed, 10/15/2014 - 08:09

Lets hear them!  What are some of your favorite memories that have happened while in Downfall?  Was it a boss kill?  Getting a legendary?   World PvP?  Getting a bear mount?  Was it when Pyreal asked, "Do I loot all the weapons"?  Whatever it may be make a post!  We talk about these things all the time.  Lets hear some of those great times we've had as a guild!

Memories...

Derchlon — Wed, 11/12/2014 - 02:41

There are so many...

1. From Power leveling to end game raiding at the start of TBC. I started the game when Allikat brought her copy over one night. I liked the game, but I couldn't choose that cool looking Draenei race with the trial, so I went all in and bought the game. While everyone was racing from 60 to 70, I was leveling from scratch. I enjoyed reading guild chat, and I got to know familiar names. By the time I hit 70, Hamfist raid had already been solidified, and was running Gruul's Lair, and Tempest Keep. It was about this time that my interest in raiding began. Then a new raid started under the name of "second Gruul's raid," led by none other than Atar. That is the same raid that would be officially named LF1M after a few nights being exactly one spot short of 25. I spent a good while on waitlists trying to get into that raid. Once I did, there was no looking back.

2. Shadow Labyrinth. I ran that 5 man dungeon almost every single day. Took me almost 70 runs for the Sonic Spear to drop. Of course, if you're familiar with shadow labs, it was not uncommon for folks to just quit halfway through, so you can feel my pain on that one.

3. Serpent Shrine Cavern. I loved the mechanics of everything in there, and Lady Vashj is still one of my favorite fights in the game.

4. Atar's "not a game" comment. I just remember vent going dead silent, and after Aidin corrected him, the laughter just did not end. GREAT memory.

5. Meeting Garreth in RL. First time I met G, I was visiting Allikat at a cafe. She asked if I wanted to meet the Guild Leader, and pointed at him in the corner. He had his laptop with him. I introduced myself, and watched him fish in Zangarmarsh while we shot the breeze.

6. Killing Archimonde. It was so frustrating to wipe so many times against Archimonde. Especially because I really enjoyed the fight! But when we finally killed him, it was worth it. I felt very gratified, and even got the best ranged weapon in the game (at the time). LF1M was full of fantastic memories.

7. Learning how to play a hunter instead of being told how to play a hunter. When I was a fresh 70 in TBC, I would constantly bug Shihli about which gear was good or bad, what rotations were good or bad, and so on. To his credit, he gave me advice on those things and also gave me directions to learn that information for myself. I basically tried to be a Shihli clone. When he became a DK, I was forced out of my comfort zone and I had to figure it out for myself. It was at that point that I really felt like I had become a master of my class, and I was officially a min/maxer.

8. Zul Aman bear runs. Quick, fun, and the progression was outstanding. I remember wanting a bear so badly, and the timer for that instance was very well tuned. Ataraxia, Everstar, Watchesup, and others. Such great times.

9. Doing Arena's with Kognus. I love that little Paladin, and doing Arena with him was certainly a highlight.

10. Kognus getting me drunk at a guild meetup. He makes a fantastic Gin and soda. Just don't ask for them all night, starting at 4pm. He may very well oblige you.

11. Raiding with Kitten Brigade. KB was my first opportunity to raid full time with Shihli, and Garreth, while still playing with some of the familiar faces from LF1M. I cherished every moment in that raid, but Ulduar trash was especially good times. So much nonsense.

12. Poisondonut. That guy can troll like a seasoned master of psychological kung fu. He was able to convince me to watch the movie Antichrist. Don't watch the movie Antichrist. I'd hang out with this guy all the time if I could.

13. Being fed by Turth. That guy can cook a mean breakfast. The guild dinner at his place of business was also a great memory. Lots of guild members all sitting down and eating dinner together, almost like a non dysfunctional family. :)

14. Visiting Aidin and Grasen down in Texas. Grasen tried hard to get me laid, then watched some baseball, met up with Jobs, and saw some high school football. We also tossed back some Naga Jolokia peppers, and essentially high fived each other for not really making it a big deal.

15. All of the guild meet ups. Worth the time spent to travel and hang out with everyone.

16. Kicking our feet up in Orgrimmar. I remember sending at least 2 full 40 man raids (probably more), into Orgrimmar, forming a wall of defense with healers in the back, and just sat there while everyone AoE'd at max range anyone dumb enough to flag themselves for PVP. I had MAYBE 1 frame per second, but it was a fantastic experience.

17. Garreth's healing seminars. I remember Garreth taking all of the guild healers from every raid, taking them out to Terrokar Forest, and teaching them how to use add ons for healing like grid, and how to set macros for strategic healing. There may have been a comment or two about raid awareness, and some advanced stuff like looking at your feet. We even had people from other guilds show up to attend a couple of the seminars.

18. Getting my full T5 set of Rift Stalker gear.

19. Hanging out and really getting to know Dave (Deje) and Pheobe while bumming around Portland antique shops. If only you two lived closer to me!

20. It really is all about the people. I would not have played WoW if it wasn't for people in this guild, and the only reason I kept playing was BECAUSE of this guild.

hsahahhaha

poisondonut — Mon, 02/16/2015 - 11:31

I just read this now, I totally forgot about AntiChrist, one of the great films of modern times no doubt!

My favorite memories are just raiding with everybody and cracking jokes all night long. For me raiding was serius bizness but also tons of fun. I remember my times in wrath playing with all you guys fondly and while I doubt I'll ever play again it's great that I met so many cool people I now consider my friends.

I still smile when I think about the amazing speech Shihli gave when we were on a perfect run, only to wipe the raid.  Are we laughing about that yet?  Shihli, it was a legendary speech, regardless of the wipe!

I hope all you are doing great! Except Garreth, I hope he's struggling to make ends meet and is driven to become a Gigolo to put food on the table. Can anyone say "cutoffs?" Mmm mmmm.

Those cutoffs are too legit!

Garreth, is there some way to get email notifications from the site or a weekly digest of whats going on?  Would be cool if you could set up some functionality that notifies users of mentions.

Thanks Doggy Dogg.

Salmon's first Lich King kill!

chaca — Tue, 10/28/2014 - 10:00

Just to give a bit of context, I'm not really a gamer. I just play WoW... and only play for raiding times. I just do whatever it takes to stay competitive for raiding and that's when my interest on gaming ends, besides RL issues that prevent me to get more hooked up to it.

But that night, after countless attempts, after entire nights, even weeks of nonstop wiping, we finally got the dance and kill one of the most challenging things I've ever done. I remember how much coordination it required, how much concentration it demanded, how much sacrifice of personal goals (such as top DPS meters) to pursue a common, greater one. Salmon, for those of you that don’t know, was a 25-man raid team (not group) that, most of us, have not even met in person. But we felt like if we were the best friends ever that night (and from that night on). The only thing missing to made it a perfect night was to have the possibility to go out and have a beer to celebrate all together.

I can’t forget that great feeling of accomplishment; I don’t want to forget it. It made me realize that physical presence isn’t a requirement to make awesome friends, that’s what all of you guys (you know who you guys are especially) are for me in my heart and soul.

I even utilize that experience to teach my students how teamwork is the most powerful tool you can develop to be successful in International Business. How teamwork, flawless coordination, trust and camaraderie, can take you beyond any obstacle, no matter how “impossible” it may seem to you.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this great community that can’t care less for my origin, language barrier, race or whatever crap I have gotten discriminated for, just for being from Colombia, South America. You guys are a real example of how globalization can be a phenomenon to unify the human species.

How sentimental I am hahahaha.

Kognus's picture

A few of these earliest ones

Kognus — Wed, 10/22/2014 - 10:44

A few of these earliest ones are going to be from <the forsaken order> like Shihli.

Hitting level 60 and being invited to raid MC on that very night along with my friends Closer (night elf druid), Disheveled (gnome rogue), Gnutsack (gnome warlock), Kareth (night elf hunter) and Josey (night elf hunter) in what would eventually become Raid: Awesome. I started out in the guild <COOL> with my leveling buddies, spent about a week in <Old Guard>, and left to join <the forsaken order> after these awesome folks from <Old Guard>'s Raid One stepped down to join our raid because of some drama (presumably caused by Lemonn and Crossgrip...). That was the beginning of a fun summer of raiding through MC, BWL and the early parts of AQ40 before I had to return to school for the fall semester.

Healing MC and BWL in a dress. I wore Robes of the Exalted from Baron Rivendare in AQ40 because nothing better for me ever dropped. NO! Lawbringer and Judgement and the ZG paladin chests were not better. They all had less +healing and I was all about stacking that shit, chugging mana potions every two minutes of cooldown while spamming Rank 4 Holy Light and Rank 1 Flash of Light.

When Gares' Barov Peasants got targeted by Vaelestraz's Burning Adrenaline and blew up the whole raid. Oh my god. We weren't even mad. That was hilarious.

Sabon tanking Onyxia as a shadow priest at level 60. What a monster.

Getting the guild's first legendary (my Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros) back when it was still a thing because of tons of help provided by friends and guildies. I still carry it with me everywhere in my bags to this day.

Calling a couple of BWL raid nights because our main tank Ensidious got grounded (he was twelve at the time, I believe).

That first night in Outland on release when Hellfire Peninsula was a complete shitshow. Trying to help each-other get through all of those quests while the smart people skipped most of it and went to Zangarmarsh.

The early days of Raid: Lava Crab in Karazhan with Nuit and Pkmaster tanking and Shihli and I doing our best to lead a raid with some pretty big personalities.

Our early attempts in Gruul's Lair back when those mechanics seemed mind-bogglingly hard compared to anything we'd seen in Vanilla.

Getting back into raiding later in the expansion with Atar's raid LF1M and making a bunch of new friends there.

Finishing up our season four sets with Disrupta's mage Disrupta after 3.0 came out and ret/arcane mage was like a nuclear weapon fighting against hand grenades (the other classes).

Getting so excited for Wrath of the Lich King and then taking an extended break because I needed to finish up film school, but (after meeting everyone in person finally during the 2009 guild meetup) coming back to rejoin the same old friends from LF1M in Raid: Salmon for ToC and ICC progression.

The woman, the myth, the legend. The Everdong.

Raid: Poker Face and Raid: Elapsed Flexes. See Elapsed's memories for reason behind the original's name. It was a neat way for members of both Raid: Kitten Brigade and Raid: Salmon to play together on an off night and earn some neat achievements throughout the latter half of Wrath of the Lich King. Raid: Elapsed Flexes has been a nice addition throughout SoO in the same basic tradition. It's a nice, community-building weekly event.

I played very little during Cata, but it was neat to run with the RBG team for a couple of months even though I was way behind all of them when it came to learning the new class mechanics.

Returning to raiding durings Mists of Pandaria with Raid: Animal Crackers. It has been a real treat to play with some old friends and make some new ones even though I've kind of been on-and-off throughout SoO.

Running tons of ICC with Dege while he kindly helped me finish my Shadowmourne four years behind the curve.

Playing lots of BGs and arenas with Disrupta and Idio to finish up gearing various characters over the past couple of months. The rot is real.

Being given some more responsability by Elapsed and seeing dark green chat again for the first time in aboud six years. Working on plans for PvP events in the next expansion as well as refining our general philosophy when it comes to that side of the game. (Expect a post soon! I meant to have it up last night, but I wanted to work on it a bit more today!)

I forgot about the Barov Peasant Caller.  Oh my goodness.

Also, didn't you do MC/BWL with that pink turban too?

Kognus's picture

I did have a pink turban, but

Kognus — Wed, 10/22/2014 - 17:23

I did have a pink turban, but if I recall correctly Judgement Helm was actually arguably better than it. It had a ton of +healing, but the t2 helm had almost as much in +damage/healing (man... remember when those were different stats... times change...) and some other relevant stats that made it a close call. I think that I got something better in between too. Some leather or cloth thing from ZG. I can't remember for certain, but I know that dress lasted as long as I was healing. No joke.

What an ironic post to log into!

I don't even know where to begin with my favorite memories of this guild.

Reading the /me comments between Starstalker and Epooptrick.

Killing Illidan for the first time with LF1M.

Getting a group of Downfall horde people to find and gank Garreth's alt.

Teaching the raid about tentacle porn and everdonging people when they fucked up.

The bear mount runs with Atar. omfg.

Anytime I raided drunk.

Leveling with Cindy and watching her get stuck on every fucking tree branch in the game.

Dangly. Lol.

Island PvP with Grasen (back in sunwell times).

Roosh's torpedo penis.

Literally there's so much, I am just reminiscing right now lol. I miss you guys!

Atar — Fri, 10/17/2014 - 11:42

Here are some more!

1. The first time I raided with Downfall - I was a fresh 60 and 2.0 had just hit.  Closer asked me if I wanted to raid and I was like, "hell yeah!"  Garreth then psted me and told me I need Leader of the Pack and the two points in Improved Leader of the Pack, and some other talents.  I got into the 40man BWL and then he told me to stand behind a pillar and don't move.....I moved and died.

2. Downing Heroic Nefarian with GEL - We had soooo many wipes on this guy it was insane.  Threerick and Resqtoaster where the heros for that kill.

3. Raiding with Golden Pand Showers in Karazhan - Grasen contacted me asking if I could tank in his 10man because Gares would be missing a few weeks.  I had just got my brand new staff off of Ring of Blood in Nagrand.  I was pumped!  That was the the first time I ever tanked in a raid.  It was awesome!

4. Taking out the Horde Capitals - Same as Saedo posted.  That was an awesome night.  I remember my team had just finished up a ZA bear mount run and then we hit Thunder Bluff.  So much fun!

More to come later!

Most of my fondest memories

Scaron — Fri, 10/17/2014 - 10:43

Most of my fondest memories emerged from good times spent with specific people (in no specific order):

1. Levelling alts with Threerick after Salmon raids in ICC. Me on my DK and him on his priest.

2. The night in ICC when Atar lost his shit at Kognus for dying in a defile. I find Atar losing his shit incites nearly uncontrollable joy for me.

3. Same night in ICC when Atar lost his shit was the same night Caronte did something Caronte-like while managing adds on Valithria and I facepalmed so hard I gave myself a bloody nose and broke my glasses.

4. Once again, same night in ICC, post-Atar-losing-his-shit we killed Arthas.

5. Raid GEL's early Heroic: Nefarian kill.

6. How few people knew that the name GEL stood for "Get Eric Laid".

Many more, these just popped into memory first.

Oh come on, Scaron. I NEVER died in a defile. ;)

saedo's picture

Oh nostalgia.  I joined back

saedo — Fri, 10/17/2014 - 10:36

Oh nostalgia.  I joined back in BC when Downfall just entered BT/Hyjal.  I was in Durus Vir (formerly Shattered Star), just collapsed, experience was wiping on Vashj for months as more of the more officers had to leave the game for RL.

1)  My first raid and contact with the guild (besides bugging Shihli) would be in Atar's LF1M, it was a Tempest Keep night, Void Walker was the dude.

2)  Group 5.  Twas Me, Turth, Shinzwei, Ewiges, and a semi rotation of others like Primistic, Vulk, Kybosh, Judgedredd, etc.

3) The group 5 revolt.  Black Temple, trash after Supremus.  After a strange night of repeated deaths, we sit out for a pull.

4) Shinzwei solo'ing Gurtogg Bloodboil.

5) Chrislow story times, oh the horror stories of the EMT from Vegas?  Was it Vegas?  I forget.

6) mALT indulging me in rogue tanking.  There was a certain gear set that allowed for 100% dodge/evasion/parry/etc.  Did some Void Walker, Gruul with it before they nerfed that.

7) The Immortal - Not just Shihli's infamous run, but as I recall, for like 3-4 weeks prior to that, every attempt was stopped by one of the officers dying.

8) Sartharion - Garreth:  "watch my feet for me", also explaining how he uses all his fingers to heal so can't PTT.

9) Also, Garreth mysteriously dies to something at the beginning of pulls, and Pudo snickering.

10) That night when we had 3-4 full raids and attacked all 4 Horde cities, locking down the AH of Orgrimmar for hours. /node/4707

11) Guild meetup.  Finally dragged my ass down there for it.

12) I made some Tera-ble replies.

13) The venture into SWTOR.  Though it was shortlived, it was a time where Downfall was a multi-mmo platform.  But alas it was only a great single player game.

14) Lava Crab in general.  Part of that is the progress we made.  Part of that is that I still like Ulduar and ICC.

15) But every raid group has been special in their own way, LF1M, Hamfist, Kitten Brigade, PMS.

16) Hall of Shame: Lesda - Thaddius, Vitriola - Vezax, Eledin - Sunwell.

There's probably more I can mention when I remember it again.
