Moving to Ubuntu Linux

I've been screwing around with Linux on and off again for the last three years and I think it's time I take the plunge with Ubuntu 8 and it's braindead-easy installer. There are really only TWO things that completely required for me to switch 100%:
- Will it run full Photoshop CS3?
- Will it run WoW (and some derivation of WoWAceUpdater)?
Mistrbook, I know that you're a linux geek and you've at least had wow and an addon updater running for the last few months. Hit me with some feedback.

Yeah G, I have been using
Mistrbook — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 15:07Yeah G, I have been using linux since kernel version 1.1.23 (around
1994) and have been runing WoW in linux (Slackware) as long as I have
been playing the game. In fact I get better frame rates with linux/WINE than I do in
Windows.
Anyways it is pretty easy to do and there are quite a few how-tos
The link below will pretty much get you going. I like to compile everything from source but you should be able to get going with the packages.

Also Adobe CS is pretty easy to get running CS2 runs out of the box pretty much. CS3 works with the latest version of WINE but I have not tested it myself.
All you need to do once you have WINE installed and configured is type 'wine /path/to/cs/installer/setup.exe' and then 'wine /path/to/cs/photoshop.exe' and you should be good to go.
Below are a few links to help you out with WINE.

As for the Ace updater I initially used a Java version somebody wrote but it started breaking on me after so I wrote my own in Python which still works but doesn't have a pretty GUI.
As always if you need any help give me a call.

Yeah, thats a huge
starstalker — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 11:54Yeah, thats a huge negative for me. Games like UT that run natively in linux are great, but my expierence with emulators like WINE has been....less than positive.
=(
Yes, you need WINE to run
Morica — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 11:50Yes, you need WINE to run it. But as I said my performance has always been better under linux than under windows. But I've not tried it in high level instances like MH or stuff. I'll have to give it a try. As I said for the best performance I recommend Cedega.
As a curious user of
starstalker — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 10:37As a curious user of fedora, I have a question. Most games I wanted to play that weren't native on linux I had to run under WINE. Will WoW run on its own, or does it still require a program like WINE? If it requires WINE, whats the performance hit like? Have you played it through MH?
OMG, that looks awesome....
Morica — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 10:37OMG, that looks awesome.... I might have to reinstall Ubuntu on my desktop again... I'll try this out on my laptop and see how well it works.
Yes it will run wow, and has
Morica — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 10:17Yes it will run wow, and has for like 2.5 years In fact for me it's always run MUCH better under linux than under windows. You might have to get a copy of Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/) for it to work the best (I use Cedega for lots of stuff so I have a copy of it anyway)... But I'm almost sure WAU won't work under WINE (Because WAU uses .net). But
Talk to me about this guy:
