Garreth's New Box
garreth — Mon, 05/26/2008 - 01:23
I'm going to be building a new machine in the next few weeks. The following are the pieces of hardware I'm looking to pick up:

Could our more technically-inclined members go over that list and hit me with some feedback? I generally buy a generation behind to pick up a better deal.
I've been playing wow on an athlon64 3400+ with an Nvidia 6800GT since day one and I think it's time to finally upgrade ;)
Edit: updated with new link to the wishlist

A couple thoughts: While
Dufe — Tue, 05/27/2008 - 13:14A couple thoughts:
While Corsair makes great RAM, so do some others that aren't as expensive. Look at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146785
for a cheaper alternative - same timings, and Mushkin has a great reputation in the enthusiast community. I'm guessing by the basket total that you're aiming for ~$1000. I'd probably put the savings from the RAM into doubling the boot drive from 74gb to the 150gb Raptor. Tests show it being just a tad faster as well.
While I also tend to prefer the "geneeration behind" concept, the one area that I generally avoid any skimp on is the motherboard. This one peice determines the future upgrade path virtually every other peice in the system. If it works into the budget, I'd try to nab an X48 board rather than the X38 one. Or if you're feeling particulary spendy the Nvidia 790i has proven itself to be an a amazing enthusiast chipset - the Asus Striker II has been called "one of the best enthusiast boards ever." Pretty much all of these X48 boards will perform well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+107172333+1071734674&name=Intel+X48
One with DDR3 support coupled with this RAM would be a great platform to allow any future expansion you may choose to do, although it comes at an added price.
Yeah, that specific 512 mb
garreth — Tue, 05/27/2008 - 09:45Yeah, that specific 512 mb model is at this really unique price-to-whoop-ass point. A lot of people are going for that one instead and OC'ing it a bit.
So, I ran wow on Kleine's machine last night for the first time in about 8 months. She has an Athlon 3800 dual core with a 7800 GT PCI-x card. In contrast, I run a single core athlon 3400+ with a 6800 ultra agp card. Holy fucking shit was it a world of difference.
I've officially commandeered her machine until my parts get here, LOL.
Actually wigs, the
starstalker — Tue, 05/27/2008 - 09:41Actually wigs, the 8800GT is a better card, especially when price is factored in, than some 8800GTS's. Its really an outstanding value.

The lowest performing peice
Ewiges — Tue, 05/27/2008 - 06:34The lowest performing peice there is the graphics card. You might want to step that up a bit. The processor blows that card away. Or you can keep that card and look for SLI in the near future. Not sure what your budget is but the new 8800GTS is the next in the paygrade and is supposed to be really good.

With nVidia and ATi
Shinzwei — Mon, 05/26/2008 - 10:24With nVidia and ATi releasing their new video cards within the next month or so I say wait for them. The new GT200 and RV770/R770 will blow this generation away. Im waiting for ATi's cards myself. But if you're set inbuilding it right now I dont see anything wrong with your list.
Sorry, I've already claimed
Katibug — Mon, 05/26/2008 - 10:05Sorry, I've already claimed Garreth's old machine. It's going to be my entertainment PC!!
Since i assume your just
Gingerbeer (not verified) — Mon, 05/26/2008 - 08:26Since i assume your just using your old power supply because theres not one on the list you might want to just look into making sure that your current one has an 8-Pin CPU connecter. Many 2x Cores need/run more efficiently with them.
But other than that, in my tired as state right now, thats all i could notice. PS.- Mail me your old shit-WTB nice cheap system lolz
