How to be prepared for WotLK
chrislow — Wed, 05/28/2008 - 14:12
Prior to the release of TBC there was a lot of freaking out, people thought the world (of warcraft) was gonna end, some stockpiled goods, found shelter and hoped for the best. Others let it all hang out and went with it.
And then there were the prepared.
I wasn't prepared. Hell, I had moved on a month prior to release. But some great ideas amongst my old guild were passed around on how to be prepared for it. I forgot most of them, but here are a few things i'm going to try.
- A couple weeks prior to release I'll do 25 quests and wait for wotlk to turn them in. That should equal a 250k exp head start. I don't think dailies count. This was an idea that actually did work for people when TBC came out.
- Hording gold.... might help, I can't keep my gold above 100 most of the time though. This might not be an option for me.
- Respeccing to an easier-to-level spec (read: DPS). Unless instancing can offer around the same rate of exp gain as questing can in WotLK, i'll be going shadow to level it up.
Any other ideas here?

I want to level a Death
Fjork — Tue, 06/03/2008 - 10:06I want to level a Death Knight purely for Lemming purposes.........
I have no real interest in the character as a whole. I mean. An Undead Gnome wearing plate and swinging a 2h? Um....... Disturbing?
I bet Gargan will have an alt though. haha.
6 weeks should be plenty.
Ewiges — Mon, 06/02/2008 - 17:186 weeks should be plenty. I'm sure we can get 10 mans rolling before that. (assuming raiding is anything like BC)
As far as anyone planning to roll DeathKnight as a main (Which I may or may not do), I suggest you step up your gaming in order to stay on track with everyone else.
As far as grouping systems, this is very "meh". I've posted an optimal leveling pattern in the prepare for WotLK thread.

Depends. It should be enough
Shihli — Mon, 06/02/2008 - 16:36Depends.
It should be enough time for existing 70's to get to 80 and get any attunements taken care of.
However, for any of us aspiring to roll a Death Knight as a main (which I MAY OR MAY NOT do), six weeks might be a stretch for 55-80.
LOL, I know YOU could do it
garreth — Mon, 06/02/2008 - 16:38LOL, I know YOU could do it :P And closer!
I'm considering attempting
garreth — Mon, 06/02/2008 - 16:33I'm considering attempting some kind of grouping system for Wrath. I basically would like to make sure just about everyone has groups for stuff so we can all stay in pace with each other. I dunno, it'd be kinda fun and we'd at least see who's able to keep up reasonably well.
I kinda want to drop a "Raiding starts in six weeks" cut off date. Think six weeks is enough for the raids to make it to 80?
What would really be cool
Ewiges — Mon, 06/02/2008 - 15:49What would really be cool simple (yet complex) to do is make it intertwine with the other proffesion. Incribe sinister strike with elementals, incrases +2 fire damage, +2 shadow damage etc etc. Costs 4 motes of fire, 4 motes of shadow etc etc, 4 vision dust, 6 (some random herb plant) and 1 parchment (engineers already make parchment that is used for 1 thing in the game, making a blacksmith recipe).

Very complicated to master efficiently.
Addendum to WotLK Preparation List:
Consider visiting brother in Dallas for "Company Audit" such as has to be performed in Midland once a month.

Paladin healing is
carno — Sun, 06/01/2008 - 21:37Paladin healing is considered a style? :P
Gold is good for re-speccing, especially if greens are pimp.
Druid:
I'm going to get feral gear first this time. I picked a class that can tank/dps/heal for a reason :) Getting 35k armor in BC for feral druid is insane (still not there yet). Getting resto gear was cake!
Other considerations:
I've read that inscription
Sabre — Sun, 06/01/2008 - 19:40I've read that inscription will use herbalism materials and that our spell book will have slots like slotted weapons. Also with metagem type slots for our spells as well.
No offical word on
saedo — Sun, 06/01/2008 - 20:02No offical word on inscription materials yet. People only hope it's herbalism because they don't want another profession associated with mining, and feel skinning makes little sense. Enchanting wouldn't work only they can d/e too which is very doubtful to have 2 profs do the same thing. Otherwise it might be similar to tailoring in which you gather drops off mobs, which isn't liked either. People strongly prefer a gathering prof to make collection of mats easier, so herbalism was the choice.
Yeah, it's a damned shame
Alydis — Sun, 06/01/2008 - 05:42Yeah, it's a damned shame that the pala AD is so mediocre... I mean, the proc is actually equivalent to a decent amount of +heal when chain-casting (ie, around 180 flat +heal) which would place it in the top 3-4 trinkets ingame easily... but it doesn't scale with spellcrit at all, and more importantly it doesn't fit in very well with how I percieve a Pala's healing style.
I was thinking the same
Fjork — Fri, 05/30/2008 - 11:44I was thinking the same thing when I was reading on that Talisman last week.
"Hmm...... Do I want a trinket that will let me LIVE through crap so I can get unstuck (Insignia of Alliance), or a trinket with no Sta/Int/etc buffs that MIGHT heal extra....."
I want my thunderclaps to do
Gares of War — Fri, 05/30/2008 - 11:37I want my thunderclaps to do nature damage
Hmm....... That is
Fjork — Fri, 05/30/2008 - 11:30Hmm....... That is true. For some reason I wasn't think about that while theorizing.
So enchanting would be a valid gathering profession for Inscription. I want to see an inscription that would let Holy Paladin's add HoT's to Flash of Light, Holy Light, and Holy Shock spells.

But it kind of blows. Would rather have an inscription that does this plx!
Inscription materials to
Fjork — Fri, 05/30/2008 - 09:49Inscription materials to gather? Good question, I'm hoping we get an answer.
Jewelcrafting basically introduced a new click (gems), I wonder if inscription will do the same starting at 55?
The only materials I can think of that would be viable for magical 'inscriptions' would be enchanting materials or for non-magical 'inscriptions' engineering materials. My feelings on inscriptions is that they would lean more towards magical since Jewelcrafting already utilizes mining as a secondary profession. Having another profession that relies on Mining would be a little unbalancing.
Blacksmithing/Alchemy/Engineering/Jewelcrafting/Leatherworking seem flat-out since they all rely on secondary professions to keep them stocked. So let's look at the gathering professions.
Herbalism could be viable by the ink for the inscriptions being made from mixing varies gathered plants. Currently on Alchemist's really use Herbalism, so there isn't much hold on the plants.
Mining is already in use by Blacksmiths, Jewelcrafters, and Engineers. Pretty heavy load on hard to find nodes. (*hint* Cartographer, GET IT)
Skinning can't really be viable because unless your inking the skin, then putting the skin on the armor, I don't really see use for stacks and stacks of rugged leather in magical or non-magical inscription.
Enchanting. Now, why would I list Enchanting as a gathering profession? Well think about it, every time you disenchant you get stacks of this dust or that shard. Piles of enchanting materials are all over the Auction House at any given time. The only reason I doubt enchanting would be used for inscriptions is most enchantments are non-stackable with other enchants/glyphs/etc. So unless Inscription is given the 'Disenchant' ability, Enchanting is really not gonna do it. However, I still feel the added 'Disenchant' to Inscription might be viable so that Enchanting/Inscriptions mats can finally come from multiple sources, as JC/BS/Engin/Leather can be gotten from world drops, chests, etc
Or we could just be fu-barred and Blizz will create another stand-alone profession like Cooking, where the Inscriptions are crafted from world-drop items. (Totems from trolls, relics from Furbolgs, candles from gnolls, etc). That would be tedious, but it would be a profession I'd probably take. "What?!?! I have to slaughter hundreds or even THOUSANDS to become a Master in this profession!?!??! WHERE CAN I SIGN UP!?!?!?"
"The only reason I doubt
Dufe — Fri, 05/30/2008 - 09:57"The only reason I doubt enchanting would be used for inscriptions is

To clarify: Inscriptions will not be going on gear at all. They go on abilities. IE, I might be able to add 2% crit to my frostbolt or something.

So, this new crafting
Nuitarin — Thu, 05/29/2008 - 17:44So, this new crafting profession... Inscription. What kind of mats are needed for that?
As far as leveing a profession past 375, I think we might have to wait for the new zones to get the new leather, arcane dust, ore, ect right?
If you still got crafted
saedo — Thu, 05/29/2008 - 18:02If you still got crafted items that are green/yellow/orange they'd still give you those first few points past 375.
"... keep this in mind -
Magic — Thu, 05/29/2008 - 07:57"... keep this in mind - remember how many motes of shadow dropped? People had so many and they were so worthless that you could vendor them for more than the AH."
I made my entire SR set including enchants and gave several primal shadows out to guildies...all with primal shadows that I payed 2G per for on the AH pre BC. I didn't have to spend a dime, or do the tedious farm for SR gear...Finally a wise investment decision, and a plus side to being a pack rat!
There was no truce when BC
Delirium — Wed, 05/28/2008 - 18:07There was no truce when BC hit, two hours after the gates opened is when the ganking began. From what I saw it was a group of 6-7 high pvp ranked horde. Can't remember their names though.
This is one reason Blizz has made multiple paths into Northrend this go around, to try and avoid the huge clump up in one zone.

Shihli — Wed, 05/28/2008 - 17:51Unless he's buying gems with his badges, hording them isn't possible across 5 toons :)
Shihli, looks like you
Ewiges — Wed, 05/28/2008 - 16:38Shihli, looks like you missed the last line "He's gonna store them all on five different characters, flood the AH
with high-prices, and use the money to max-out enchanting on his new
Death Knight."
Anyways, doing the quests and turning them in didn't work so well when BC came out. Heres my tips, I was one of the first haundred or so to hit 70.
There will be a truce when the server went BC, this was agree'd apon the major guilds. This truce was broken once we all hit 70. I including, turned the lower level area into hell. I heard the truce was also broken among the later crowd (PvP means you will get ganked sooner or later).
Ok, suggestions, hordeing gold isn't a bad idea. Doesn't exactly help with leveling, but itll help once you hit 80. The second I hit 70, I was able to buy an able mount. Works nicely doesn't it?
Don't be agraid to lose your gear. You are leveling, purple doesn't mean shit. Replace it with greens. When I hit 70 my entire blood fang was gone besides the gloves (lawl, OP then OP at 70)
Stay ahead of the crowd. Many non hardcore people were able to keep up with me and my friends because they stayed one zone ahead. No crowds meant no compitition on mobs and no lag (entire server in one zone will make lag, get over it)
I said friends, friends are good. Use them when you need them, if you don't have any thats ok. Heres the thing, quest says Kill 8-10 random shit, find other people, as many as you can WHILE doing the quest to join you. Another quest says Gather 8-10 random things. Ditch your friends (unless this require killing and you're afraid to respect from holy). It is quicker, for both people.
Are you a crafter? Plan on keeping your crafts up to date? Get lots of mats ready for release, you will burn them if you want your trade skills to get up. Craft random shit. The sooner you get the end-game enchants the more people you have to craft on/for and the quicker you will max out.
Research. By the time WotLK comes out, BETA will be open. Discuss the zones, content, and instances. Find out what quests are bugged, what quests are quick and easy. Do those first.
Lastly, how hardcore are you? Are you trying to hit 80 ASAP? Do you really want to? Enjoy the content. Decide what is important to you.
I haven't thought much about
Ardea — Wed, 05/28/2008 - 16:20I haven't thought much about it... when TBC came out I raced Lepp to 70 and 3 weeks after release started the 10 month long Kara farm... darn mindblade.
This go around I am doing Ardea. I was thinking about leveling resto, grouping up and instance farm to 80. The problem with that is when I hit 80 I am less likely to want to go back for quests.
I am sure I will be feral for the most part... tanking is not too bad.
