garreth — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 11:46Just as a reminder: We're all friends here and we love to debate. Taking it personally is like believing we really do have sex with Turth's mom, or believing that Ewiges mom really does deliver pizza for Domino's. It's all banter that needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
I have "magic numbers" for Brutallus that I know our raiders can hit. It kind of goes like this in my head:
Group layouts for Brut are going to look roughly like this for :
There MIGHT be a shadow priest for ONE arcane mage. I know Cali can handle being out by himself without a spriest. This is an 8 healer strat. With seven healers, we have the potential to stick a fire mage in a shammy/spriet group as well.
Thank you Garreth, my only
Disrupter — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 15:14Thank you Garreth, my only question is that if we do indeed go with the 7 healer set up, and it is just me and Karli, would we want me to be Arcane? I've never broken 1900 dps other then Arcane so I'm a little worried I might not reach that standard, I wish I could like, get all the buffs I would have on Brutallus and go own Dr Boom for a while so I can get an idea what kind of dps I'd be doing :P.
Teron Gorefiend is a kinda meh test for a Frost mage, because the aoe stuff always get's the damned pet or I'll barrier to help the healers. Assuming that Brutallus' frontal cone damage is predictable, then it'll not nerf my dps at all having that fragile elemental not get owned. (This is a part of frosts cooldown management, you'll only get a certain amount of elementals per fight anyways, as long as you can maintain that amount and get the full duration of it you'll do just fine.)
Kind of like for fire, if the fights less then 2 minutes, you'll want to wait until near the end, near 20%, to pop all your cooldowns, not right at the beginning. Either way you'll only get to use them once, may as well get to use them at the point they'll give the biggest boost ;).
Disrupter, I never meant to
saedo — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 00:37Disrupter, I never meant to attack you or anything To be honest, I enjoy debates. I like talking about theorycrafting as well.
I do have a 70 mage, but haven't truely played for a while. I would say I'd know the basics but not up to speed on current theory/mechanics. A part of me is very curious about current end game mages and was looking more for the logic and explainations. Sorry, not just "i top dps", "i save raids from wipes" responses.
I was more solely interested in possibilities to increase raid dps as a whole. I don't care if you're top dps or last dps. Increasing anyone's dps is increasing raid dps. We want every ounce of dps we can get for Brutallus.
Sure we can go ahead and wipe a bit and experiment and what not. But I'd still like to discuss possibilities. Prepare a bit beforehand.
So if frost is the way you are. The way you're going to be. The way it has to be for raid dps to be at its peak. So be it.
To get the most dps out of
Disrupter — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 02:01To get the most dps out of me as an individual raider, would be to have me go Arcane, and put me with a shadow priest and a shaman, and give me a heroism.
If I'm not going to get either of those, with the gear I purchased with points, and method I gemmed them, frost is going to definitely beat fire for me. I've tried optimizing my dps with my gear using a little program called Rawr, and even completely optimized, without an spriest/shaman I will be doing more dps as frost then as fire. I looked and looked to make sure there was no discrepancy, no setting that was incorrect, because no one was going to believe me that Rawr said more dps as frost then fire.
I'm not the highest dps spec for a reason, we're on content that healers need the shadow priest required to make it the highest dps spec..
Anyways, I think I over reacted some and apologize, can we please stop talking about theorycraft now? I haven't had to write this much crap since like... yeah.... a while ago... lol. I need to spend this time farming for gems and repaying debts.... need so many gems for my gear atm.. need to reset up my gears gems to squeek a little more dps out for Brutallus.
Thus far all I've seen from
Shihli — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 00:14Thus far all I've seen from the raid officers/leaders is general questioning about the merits of Frost/Arcane vs. Fire, which appears to be the prevalent spec for most guilds downing Brutallus.
I haven't read anyone directly say "You need to be fire." If they implied it, then I missed it as well. All I've read from most of us is "You need to be the spec that, given your gear and skills, will give you the highest dps." In this case it looks to be frost, so have at it.
Furthermore, this has been a (mostly) civil discussion about the merits of each spec and it has been informative for many of us that don't play mages. Don't stomp your feet because people are questioning your gear and your choices. Clarify to them why you do something, and if they don't get it ... that's their loss.
Lastly, if anyone has been giving anyone else in raid for any reason, shit for their spec ... they need to pound sand. Yes, it's one thing for someone to have a sub-optimal or experimental raid spec, and by all means people sometimes need to be talked with to clarify what they're doing. But to blame boss wipes, "wipe nights", or anything else on account of a player's spec - that's bullshit, and it needs to stop.
Sorry for derailing your blog a bit there on the last paragraph, but it's been a semi-prevalent problem that I've heard second-hand from a few people, and it needs to be put to bed.
Rupter, I'm having a really
Karli — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:55Rupter, I'm having a really hard time understanding why your itemization for frost/haste isn't going to translate very well to fire. Explain?
Yep Saedo, that is exactly
Karli — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:53Yep Saedo, that is exactly what I'm saying. Once again the theorycraft is out there but let me break it down into conceptual terms.
You can look at parses and see something pretty clearly. Rupter has slightly better gear than me overall, and when he is arcane he does slightly more dps than me. When I am arcane and he is frost, I do considerably more damage than him.
Arcane is powerful for one simple reason: two piece T5 set bonus. 20% more dmg of arcane blast, but at the expense of 20% more mana cost, is still a pretty powerful buff. And as gear gets better, mana becomes more manageable allowing you to spam Arcane Blast even more. Int and Spirit help a lot here. I'm not really a fan of haste for arcane because mana is the one biggest obstacle to overcome for an Arcane mage, and I'd rather hit harder (crit) than faster (haste) and spend more mana. It also doesn't hurt that the hit cap for Arcane is less than half of what it is for fire or frost.
There comes a point, though, when the 4 piece T6 set bonus surpasses the arcane set bonus. Four pieces of T6 make your fireballs do 5% more damage. Fireball is your primary spell, and unlike arcane, it's much more sustainable. Arcane usually needs a bit of "filler" spell to help with mana regen, whereas mana is not nearly the issue it is with arcane. If you give a fire mage a shadow priest, they can start stacking other goods that further increase dps; whereas an arcane mage a spriest just maintains status quo. A fire mage w/ a spriest can use destro pots and flame caps since they aren't having to use mana gems or pots which share a cooldown. Thus leading to the lethal combo you're seeing on all the top level fire mages.
Then by that logic.
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 19:01Then by that logic. Disrupter, who has 4/8 now? 5/8? Is gearing around frost it seems. So, is that something he should be doing?
The 4 peice bonus does add
Dufe — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 21:45The 4 peice bonus does add 5% dmg to Fireball, Frostbolt and Arcane Missles. So it does help frost out by the same amount at face value.
I'd like to finish this
Disrupter — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 23:59I'd like to finish this terrible test of a blog, which has turned from something so I could perhaps, keep track of some things I like, and maybe do a little informing on the mage class for others.
Karlizeth, I do not know if your Theorycraft is right or not, what I do know are Parses. Nearly every time as arcane I've consistantly done the most damage of the mages (barring attempts like, where I died, or someone body pulled while I was oom, etc.) I generally am the second on damage as Frost and Fire. So if it is gear, I apologize but, I'm still not sure how to make a 150 dps difference on boss fights in Hyjal and other places.
Teron Gorefiend, a simulator for Brutallus, was near 2k dps as arcane, I think I got close to that once as fire with a completely utterly stacked group. But as frost, I recently haven't been getting said stacked groups so I can't quite maintain that kind of dps if I don't.
If you've known all along Karli, that 4/8 T6 as fire is the #1 dps set up in game, why have you clinged so closely to arcane, and not seeked out getting said bonus to optimize your dps? I knew right away that Arcane requiring an Spriest was going to cause difficulties on fights that required giving healers them instead. So I worked towards getting 4/8 so I could respec back frost and be happy. Fire being utterly gimped for 2 bosses in bt, and frost being gimped for rage, I generally respecced to arcane or fire if I had been pvp spec prior for Hyjal. Min/Max things a little bit, speccing for the instance/bosses isn't something beyond my capability.
Whats beyond my capability, is taking a constant questioning of how I play my class and set up my gear.
There is no head mage in this guild, or anything like that. It was generally known that you were Arcane, I was Frost, and Sorahn Fire. We each had our own spec we liked. I went Arcane and really loved it, dps'd like a champ. But I still worked towards my 4/8 to do my best on dps in the scenario, spriests were more and more desired for the healers. I don't always top the dps meters on some fights , particularly because I'm doing things in the back round attempting to help all I can towards a successful attempt.
People may have already forgotten the near wipe we had because Karlizeth was killed while mage tanking, and I picked the mage up and mage tanked it with nearly astounding 9k hp. I had to judge barriers, and even ice blocks, so that I wouldn't die, and so I wouldn't get someone else one shot. And , yes, if I was fire, I would have very much died on that attempt. That illidan we wipe killed, would of just been a wipe, if I hadn't saved us from the Parasites near the end that Chrislow hadn't brought to the grate, none of the mages seemed to be helping me with the parasites very much at all, hell, if I didn't do the nova, it didn't seem to generally get nova'd , sometimes by Sorahn, nearly never by yourself.
So, if I, myself, me, does the math and the theorycraft and finds out that I will indeed, do a "vastly higher dps" with fire, then so be it. But thats a crock of shit and we all know it. We didn't all go non fire for Illidan, and we downed him, sure, everyone else had to work harder but, no one FORCED anyone to respec except Nettibbeb.
I just wanted to write a blog for myself, and certain peope have turned this into an oppurtunity to clash heads with me on Theorycraft. Theorycraft is Theorycraft, Reality is Reality. Your theorycraft may be correct, but going off mine I still seem to do a vastly large amount of dps arcane. I'm open for discussion and trading of information to better myself, but, this whole series of posts seems to be an attempt to tell me I'm wrong, and they're right. There are going to be guilds with frost mages in them that kill Brutallus. There are GOING to be guilds that actually have ARCANE mages killing Brutallus. It's not an odd thing to see I'm sure.
So I'd just like to stop this little debate, it's settled as to what spec I'll be. It'll be the spec I choose for the job I feel is necessary. If a very large amount of dps is required of me, and I'm not going to be given the necessary buffs to achieve it, why am I going to need to respec. I already do it out of my own will to make sure I'm not gimped on any particular fight if at possible, if I find I'm gimped as frost on Brutallus, whom yet we've actually had a REAL attempt at, then I'll take the time to farm the 1-2k g to regem my gear and such, just so I can regem it again later.
I'll no longer be responding to posts, and I'm asking that we just stop, posting here, if yo uwant to discuss theorcraft with me, or tell me I don't know what I'm doing and try to change my mind, thats fine, do it a private message, whisper, mail, or even vent.
Please stop posting here, thanks.
I'm really disappointed that
Karli — Thu, 06/12/2008 - 21:29I'm really disappointed that this couldn't have gone in a more positive direction. I thought we were having an intellectual discussion, not a war of the e-peens.
This is a game. It's not a race, and it's certainly not something that I want to log into and have things that are meant to be theorycraft banter turn into wounded egos and misconceptions.
I have neither the time nor the desire to race through the content and be the first to have every best piece of gear in slot. There is no guaranteed loot in wow, but I always have fun along the way. I do not play to sling mud at people I am supposed to be helping and playing alongside. I just hope that everyone else here can be mature enough to do the same.
I followed the link to
Karli — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:44I followed the link to http://www.wwsscoreboard.com/topdps.php and then used the search function to type in my character name.
Oh that. We only have 2
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:53Oh that. We only have 2 fights that got ranked. So I suppose our players aren't gonna score high since it's averaged between em or something.
Rupter, there's a lot to
Karli — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:28Rupter, there's a lot to address here so I'll try to do a little bit at a time.
First, your stat ranking is not quite correct. It may be true for frost, but it's not true for Arcane. For an arcane mage, it goes more like:
Spell Damage > Spell Crit > Int > Spirit > Haste > Hit
I don't think I need to explain this one to you, but if anyone else wants an explanation, have at it.
Next: Saedo, I looked up myself on WWS and need to point out you may be viewing skewed data: namely, I'm pretty certain I don't do 87 dps. Look into this please?
Lastly: I'm not going fire till I have 4 of 8 Tier 6 for the set bonus, and in slots that preferably allow me to at least wear my kick-ass helm or shoulders. This means I still need to get gloves and legs, at the very least. I will not consider going fire until then. There's plenty of theorycraft out there as to why; go take a look at it. And as an addition, I highly doubt that any of the fire mages Saedo referenced didn't have the four piece bonus.
Then Karli, are you saying
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:42Then Karli, are you saying Fire is the end spec for mages once 4 pc T6 and whatever other kick-ass gear combo you can get?
Where exactly are you seeing
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 18:35Where exactly are you seeing yourself as 87 dps?
I gave up all the crit I
Keisjaa — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 15:30I gave up all the crit I could for haste.
just gonna jump in here &ask is there a target haste number you're looking for or are you just trying to amass as much as possible?
i know the shadowpriest.com forums have all this debate about a "sweet spot" & when to actually gem for haste vs other stuff.
you also gain 100% benefit from haste as your cast times(or at least a shit ton of them) can be lowered a lot (as opposed to instant casts that really only gain GCD reduction)
just wondering how it affects your sustainability over say a 6 minute fight. more DPS at a higher cost of mana & skill management?
Curiosity, I like to know how a "less complex" damage model functions
The way it works for a mage
Disrupter — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 17:00The way it works for a mage is
Spell Hit > Spell Haste > Spell Damage > Spell Crit
The first two, scale quite well with your gear, the more gear you have, the more of a benefit you gain from said stats. Spell damage becomes more useful as you cast faster, and crit is the "filler" that no mage should go out of there way for.
There is a certain point where you have so much spell damage, that a 10 haste gem will out way a 12 spell damage gem. This is the point I'm attempting to reach. I believe I already passed that point but I got so much spell haste (almost 200) that the spell damage started going up in value again.
I'm merely attempting to do the most bang for my buck , but theres no point in spell haste if I'm going oom dpsing. May as well get more spell damage.
I can certainly manage a 6 minute fight as any of the 3 specs, but what is being asked of me is impossible, I will not have an spriest/shaman, so no double icey veins during the last 20% tied with a heroism/trinket/flamecap/destro pot combo which is what makes fire so potent on that fight. I'm not getting that, so there is no way in hell I need to go fire. I'll oom popping those cool downs like that, the math I figured in to use 20k mana in 2 minutes, didn't even account for the fact I can have a massive haste increase via icy veins/snap/icey veins and any drums we may have in group. The dps will be quite good, until, I'm completely out of mana.
It's like, telling an arcane mage to destro pot instead of mana pot and expect them to spam frostbolt as arcane and do the same damage.
I think what Rupter is
Katibug — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:44I think what Rupter is trying to say is move this conversation to somewhere besides his blog. It's a good discussion, just misplaced.
It accounts the 10 seconds
Disrupter — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 13:34It accounts the 10 seconds of 10% less crit in the 6 minute fight.
Fire also accounts for the many GBCD's requires to maintain the scorch debuff.
My gear is more suited for Frost, built around Frost, designed for it. I'll do good dps as fire, but this gear is Optimized for frost dps, not fire.
Can it account for 2 or more
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 13:46Can it account for 2 or more mages of the same spec to ramp up they Winter Chill and Scorches faster? And subsequently, the less GCDs it would require to keep scorch up if that responsibility is shared.
I don't believe it had that
Disrupter — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 15:00I don't believe it had that option for Winterschill, but it does have it for Fire.
The problem im seeing is at maximum I'm at 12k mana, and fire with my current haste and WITHOUT using icey veins.. I'll use bout 20k mana in 2 minutes.
A Destruction potions causes a CD of Super Mana Potion of 2 minutes, a Flame cap a 3 minute CD of Mana Gem.
It'll technically increase my DPS , if I was fire, and popping Destruction Potions and Flame Caps, instead of not popping them. But my DPS as a whole on said fight, is going to go down. A super mana potion and a mana gem only regens ~5.5k mana on the high end and thats every 2 minutes. So Assuming I pot / gem 30 seconds in to get back to full... I'm still going to have a difficulty maintaining the mana pool to sustain it.
Yes, I can evocate, but, that's lost time to dps. Yes crits do return a minor amount of mana, but with my gear set up, I gave up all the crit I could for haste.
I can use mage armor to sustain longer, but once again, decrease in "DPS". So if we're looking at the whole "min/maxing thing" I'm wondering how the hell I'm going to do what I read is required if I can't keep casting ><.
Another question. How
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:22Another question. How close is "close" by your definitions?
By rogue standards, we'll say swords is top, but in equivalent gear:
This is if I completely regem for stuff like mutilate. Is 2% considered "close" enough? Hell with mutilate, can probably find a situation to top combat, a short fight (2 mins or less) with a lot of burst required, and no adds to deal with. Or fights with a lot of interruptions will also do.
I digress. But the question stands. How much of a difference is really between the specs? I suppose mainly between fire and frost since that's basically been insisted as being "close enough".
What I keep hearing in
Dufe — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:00What I keep hearing in these threads is, "Go for the most dps, but only if that means fire. Otherwise, go fire." Rupter and I have done alot of math/research on this. Basically I have found several things:
1) The same theorycrafters who have favored fire for the last 3+ years mostly continue to do so. Also, alot of 70 year old men in the south are still racist, and continue to find ways to justify it to themselves.
2) People who have decided to consider mana regen and fight length as variables (duh) have found more varying results depending on group makeup and fight length.
3) All three specs are so close that gear changes and different fights will favor different specs. You just have to know which fights will need your dps the most, and what your gear can do.
This blog was (I think) intended to allow the mages to get together and help each other with such spec decisions, since they are far more complex than most other people give them credit for. When was the last time a rogue got new boots and thought, "Hmm, maybe I should go subtlety now?"
Pretty much this was
Disrupter — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:26Pretty much this was primarily for myself, and anyone that wanted to know a little more about mages.
Feel more like it became an opening for an attack at my spec lol. So I go arcane to prove my ability to really rack out the dps. (Not fire, because I don't do as much dps as fire, and probably won't get a shaman or spriest anyways.)
I'm going to end this little debate right now. We've done Kalecgos once, And will need to kill him again before we can even DPS Brutallus. We need to get the fight down, and we may find we need 8 healers, for all we know. I probably over reacted a bit, but all this "Fire Fire FIRE!" talk is making me feel like all the time I spent as frost, everyone thought I should be a different spec? All the 1% wouldn't of been wipes if I was fire? Thats what it feels like is being insinuated by telling me I need to be fire.
An FYI , my Rawr tells me , each with their OPTIMIZED dps gemming/gear. That frost is slightly more dps then fire. So that right there is all I need, to justify being the spec I am. If you want more dps out of me, first step would be buffs ;).
I thought it was all in
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:41I thought it was all in preparation for the min-maxing of Brutallus. I've been carrying [Elixir of Demonslaying] in my bags since last week. ;p
Tell me something about Rawr. Does it assume stuff like Winter's Chill is always fully stacked for you? Or solo ramp up of it?
When was the last time a
saedo — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:10When was the last time a rogue got new boots and thought, "Hmm, maybe I should go subtlety now?"
Change "boots" to "weapon" (fist/sword/dagger/mace), then there'll be thoughts of "Hmm, maybe I should go X spec now?"
Right, but the point was
Dufe — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 12:13Right, but the point was that ANY peice of gear has the potential to do it for mages.
While we're not outright
Shihli — Wed, 06/11/2008 - 11:42While we're not outright saying that you NEED to be fire, you should consider the idea as a possible course for the future. As a pure dps class, your sole role (like mine, and like Saedo's) in a raid is to dps. If I came as a retarded hybrid spec, or Saedo came as PvP shadowstep spec, we would not be fulfilling our PvE raiding role.
Not saying that you aren't fulfilling your role (you're doing it quite well in fact), but don't be abject to the idea of speccing to maximize your damage, particularly in the face of Brutallus.
Not true. For
Dufe — Tue, 06/10/2008 - 22:13Not true.
For example:
Movement - It's easier to get frostbolts or partial arcane missiles off during phase 2 Supremus than a long 3 sec fireball. You still have scorch, but it's not going to be as good.
Silence - Some specs are more dependent on short duration buffs like Arcane power to boost dps. Having these get clipped by silences (Azgalore) will be more detrimental to such specs.
