PS3 is sold cheaper than production cost
tweaks — Thu, 06/26/2008 - 21:53
Sony lost about 3.3 billion on ps3, they totally failed in the console war this time, there are still in the war, but anyone think sony will pull a dreamcast and totaly quit the console race and just dabble with games? I don't see them just making games like sega turned out doing but i can see them pulling a dreamscast here if they can't keep rolling with good games, they are on a roll right now.
mgs4 and resistance2 are a good start. However they need to keep rolling with this, bring back the legacy of kain games if possable, get some actual good games to play online, and figure out how to make the console cheaper to make, they did good with the ps2, take out the backward compatability of memory cards and reduce size and increase that verions price was prolly a great idea to reduce cost and make more profit, however downgrading the ps3 now would prolly be futile and make things worse without them realy racking in the cash.
They need to do somthing fast because i don't see sony lasting too long in this console war if they can't keep up the good games. ATM I know of prolly 10 games from xbox360 that totaly kick ass, however i only know of like 3-5 on ps3.......Grahh! end of my rant on ps3 my ex is trying to contact me agian and it just totaly pissed me off now lol.

I have been a console gamer
Sorreah — Wed, 07/02/2008 - 14:04I have been a console gamer since atari
i collect game as well as console's ( looking for a good atari 2600 and an intelevision ) for me the only one of the 3 systems i dont own is the 360
yes it has some good games and its online is eaily the best of the these next gens although the only one you have to pay for. but it just doesnt have enough for me to justify the cost atm
Wii was a great investment for me mostly because my wife loves it and so does my 5 year old she thinks maro cart is the best thing ever. the PS3 while expensive just had more to offer for me. blue ray + backwards compatable + exclusive for the next FF just makes it the right system for me. do i miss some games for 360
sure but i can get more than enough of them for the pc that it isnt a game breaking issue for me
so who has some old games or systems they want to sell / trade
Props for starting this
Ueber — Tue, 07/01/2008 - 17:27Props for starting this conversation--it's an interesting debate. I've only really been a PC gamer, so I can't really talk about any of the three systems from personal experience.
Like a lot of people here, I have to agree that the Blu Ray is probably PS3's great strength and weakness. Now that it's won the format war, the system has gotten a considerable boost. I am more concerned that it was a technology introduced way too soon.
The first thing I am going to say is is that the Wii is in a whole seperate niche from the PS3 and 360. Hell, my wife asked me to get her one for her upcoming birthday, and I am hoping it is a good gateway drug for her into the gaming world. But PS3 and 360 have always struck me as appealling more to the people interested in the technologically demanding "hard core" game experience.
Microsoft took a gamble by introducing the 360 first, but I think backwards compatability on any system helps make doing so less an issue. What they may have successfully managed to do is set themselves up to be best prepared to get a leg up on the next generation.
I bet we'll see the next microsoft console in 2-3 years. By then, more people will have HDTVs, Blu Ray will be cheaper, and I bet more developers will be interested in taking full advantage of that sort of technology. If microsoft still is holding a bigger share of it and PS3's nitche and is able to get the jump on the next generation with something that is more powerful and reasonably affordable, I would say that Sony is more likely to go the way of Sega in the console market.
I'm back from my cousins
mav — Sat, 06/28/2008 - 22:27I'm back from my cousins house after a 3 day Wii marathon. And I just want to say that Wii Sports is amazing. Super Mario Galaxy is also a feast for the eyes and really gives you an idea of what the system is capable of.
But today I realized why Nintendo sold so many consols when my grandparents came over for a birthday party. They were instantly intrigued with the system, loved the Mii creators (Mine looks exactly like me. Sexiest Mii ever) and they loved golf and bowling. And you could tell everyone was thinking "we have to get one".
I think the lower price is a great idea because it makes it a realistic purchase for the non-gamer crowd who just want something to use during parties and stuff. Its also used in a lot of physical rehab clinics because it gets the body moving and uses a lot of muscles that need to be worked.
I'm honestly not sure what point im trying to make here but uh... yes. I still like the 360 better though just because I like games with deep story lines.

Nellem1 — Sat, 06/28/2008 - 19:51oh the wii. The wii is a technology that's been around for years that Nintendo took and warped to it's own twisted version (muahahah). If you remember back in the day, there was a little gaming system that would be setup on a tripod. there was a controller associated with it, you looked into the machine and pressed the buttons on the controller (god forgive me for forgetting the name of the machine). Then there was virtual games of sorts. That's effectively what Nintendo has put together. A virtual game that is interactive. There's games that are similar to it's design (i.e. arcade games that required interaction with the different things on the screen), yet no where near the transportability that Wii has created.
Not to mention, NES was the original big boomer for gaming systems. While the atari was big in it's own respect, it was nothing in comparison to the NES. Nintendo has been doing the same thing all along: coming up with something new that everyone can play and love. There was a low production cost with a high demand = perfect match. How many problems do you really have with your Wii? The occasional reprogram that's necessary for the remote. Other than that, it's great!
Im an avid lover of gaming systems and games. I put myself behind anything i enjoy =P.

Companies losing money on the hardware is nothing new. Its made up 10 fold in royalties and licensing on the games. Its a business model that has been around since NES and the original PS days.

Blizzhax — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:59That is true as well, but as you said yourself no one felt that they needed to get this new machine (that was about 4-500$ at launch and used larger format cd's), when they could just play the original ps1.

Shihli — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:49The PS2 didn't really have any competition at the start of its release, though. The xBox was "evil Microsoft's devil gaming machine" and gamers initially strayed away from it. The N64 did alright at the start, but not nearly strong enough to be the victor.

Blizzhax — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:47I agree that it is not poised for a victory, but it will be fine in the long run.

PS2 has a HUGE library of games, still has solid graphics, and is dirt cheap nowadays. There's less incentive to buy a PS3 by comparison.
And just because PS3 will become cheaper to produce doesn't mean too much. xBox 360 and the Wii will become (and already ARE) cheaper to produce as well.
As a metaphor ... how many times in a 100m sprint have you seen someone stumble off the starting block, fall flat on their face, and still win the race?
Sony stumbled (overpriced PS3 with no strong release titles), then fell flat on its face (when it said to the world that "gamers will still buy a PS3, regardless of the price or the release titles, because it's the superior machine") ... and I see no chance of victory.
That much is true.. however
Blizzhax — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:40That much is true.. however costs will eventually start to change to profits when the technology becomes easier to produce, and more games get released.
This same thing happened when the PS2 was launched, and now 8 years later the system is still being sold and so are the games.

Agoney — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:39You guys are acting like blu-ray development wont be dropping in price anytime soon. I remember when CD burners were $300, I swore I'd never get one.
PS3 with blu-ray and its cell processors is both a good and bad challenge for programmers. The initial learning of the programming will be a bitch, but now they have a far greater canvas to work with.
And wow, "stabalzie", I truly have some epic spelling.

Shihli — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:33I'll agree, MGS is selling PS3's, but since PS3 is still selling for a loss - Sony isn't trying to turn a profit anymore so much as it's trying to mitigate its losses.

But if it was anyother game other than MGS4 then yeah it prolly wouldnt push the ps3. Also about the mixed reviews..Its understandable, seeming how the game is the same format with few new ideas..that and Kojima is pushing his beliefs more forcefully in this one, which is a gaming turnoff to some. oh well, still a great serious IMO

And for you who doubt my "gamer cred":

- NES (old gray box version)
- SNES
- SEGA Genesis
- Panasonic 3DO (look it up, it exists)
- N64
- PlayStation
- PlayStation 2
- xBox (heavily modified)
- Wii
- GameBoy (from the old gray handheld, thru the slim version, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, etc)
- Nintendo DS
"I agree strongly with barqs
Shihli — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:18"I agree strongly with barqs here. The wii is on top because it appeals to all those old people and non-gamers. The ps3 however has doomed itself with the stock blu-ray. Sony has been known for Final Fantasy, Resident Evil Titles, and MGS. All these titles appeal to kids who are now, in their teens or starting college because back when they started the series those same kids were younger. Not to say those titles don't appeal to adults and older gamers however. The general age range of people that look for those titles just frankly cant afford the ps3, even more so due to the economys current Reccision (Spelling? spell check said it was right)
None the less SONY will make a comeback with the ps3. They are smart people and between the FF(think of how much you want to see an omni-slash in hi-def, or a Bahumut Zero) series, Metal Gear, and Resident Evi. How they do it will be interesting though."
I have to strongly disagree with most everything you said here, Ginger ...
The Wii is NOT "for old people and non-gamers." I'm a gamer, have been since I was like 7 years old, and I LOVE the Wii. It has its shortcomings for sure (limited game library, just as many gimmicky games as there are innovative ones, etc), but it's a console designed for one purpose - gaming. The PS3 suffers in much the same way the PSP does - they are trying to contend on too many fronts, and as such are losing the war. If the strongest reason most people can come up with to purchase a PS3 is because it's a Blu-Ray player ... yeah.
We will never see Bahamut ZERO or Omnislash on the PS3, because SquareEnix will not re-release FF7. Sure, they'll package new games with the old characters, but they won't rerelease FF7 specifically (even though it would be a BRILLIANT move on their part). As for MGS, I've heard mixed reviews, and that game alone won't push the system off the shelves faster than the 360 or the Wii. And Resident Evil? That's been cross-platform for years, so there's no reason to buy a bloat-priced PS3 when you can buy a 360 for the same game (or eventually, a Wii).
I have all 3 consoles. I
Blizzhax — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:23I have all 3 consoles.
I will agree that the Hardware for the PS3 is superior to the XBOX 360, and of course better than the Wii.
However, I also agree that the PS3 is screwing itself right now because
other than it's exclusives the third party games are better played on
the XBOX 360 (higher frame rates in most cases). Plus, the exclusives
are few and far between.
As for functionality.. no way is the PS3 or Wii beating the XBOX 360.
The 360 has an amazing online service, chat, downloadable movies (tv
shows also), a unified system that can be accessed in or out of game, a
very sweet arcade, much more content every week, and the biggest draw
for most people is the achievement system, which makes the game feel a
little bit more competitive, full, and gives you a feeling of
accomplishment. But the downside is that it costs 50$ a year and there
are ads in weird places.
What will definitely help the PS3 is firmware upgrade 2.4 which is
supposed to do a lot of things the XBOX 360 already does (chat,
achievements: aka trophies, etc.) The upside is that the PS3 has a
internet browser (I don't use it but some people love it) and the fact
that the online is free.
As for the PS3 losing money.. they knew what they were in for when they
started out on this journey. The Blu Ray technology was very expensive
so it was inevitable that they lost money. HOWEVER in losing that
money, they won a format war and now have the BEST Blu Ray player out
because of the ability to upgrade it with firmware and still play PS2
and PS3 games.
And as we all know the 360 lost a ton of money, and still does every time an 360 Red Rings.
Basically, in the end yes the Wii is for casual gamers that just want
to play games for a few minutes a day or just have a good time with
friends (and will make a billion dollars because everyone and their
mother wants one), and the 360 and the PS3 will have their own great
games, which will shock and awe with the beauty of their graphics and
complexity of their stories.
Who comes out on top is to be seen, but I for one enjoy each and everyone of them.
agree that the wii has less
Barqz — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 09:15agree that the wii has less heavy hitting 3rd party franchises, but since its major market share is non hardcore gamers, i think that disadvantage is minimal. "True" gamers (and i hate that term) will stick with a 360/ps3/ or pc, or all the above. In the end all the systems have something to offer, you just go with what fits you best. Personally I like my 360 because of the game library, I'll prolly get a ps3 if and when I need a blu-ray player, and wii because the ladies love the wii.

Netti — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 08:57Don't know about the gaming aspect, but virtually every audiophile magazime I've read always include it among the top blue ray disc players out there...now that blue ray has won the format war, it makes sense for people to invest in a ps3 as not only a gaming console but a top blue ray player as well..
While there are more Wii
Dikymo — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 08:51While there are more Wii units sold, there are also far fewer good games. Wii is having serious third party shovelware problems. Companies are using the "casual gamer" tag to put out glitchy piles of garbage.

Barqz — Fri, 06/27/2008 - 05:19Actually, neither system is winning the war. The wii is on top, that system is in more homes than the ps3 and 360. That is largly in part due to the "non'gamer" market picking up the system. Will ps3 beat 360, no. Development costs to utilize blu-ray is to expensive for developers to dump all their money into. Microsoft has also had a head start by launching firt, bringing more titles, and securing more exclusives. Not to mention that xblox live, though costly, offers more features and stablitly than the current sony market place. Of course in the end, bost sytems fail in comparison to a good pc. Personally sony would have done much better if they used the extra room in that mostrosity of a body to double it up as a foreman grill.
