Jai's little holiday

jaibyrd's picture

jaibyrd — Mon, 08/04/2008 - 02:35

I'll be away from the 21st till the 26th of August.  Time to go enjoy the company of the people I'm related to in a group setting with rules intended to prevent us from killing each other.  Otherwise known as a family reunion.  I am actually looking forward to it. Really.  Last time when I said to my Hubby "never ever let me go to one of those again" I didn't really mean it.  Honest. This time all our parents are to be seperated at all times and not let within 5 metres of each other.  And each of us is responsible at all times for their behaviour...if they get out of hand we must take them away.  For my Irish family its sometimes better if we visit from a bit of a distance.  There is lots of animosity between my mom, Eileen, and her siblings and her siblings with each other as well.  So all the cousins band together to keep the peace.  I'm sure it'll go better this time.  No one is allowed to bring cast iron frying pans for instance.  That's a given after Uncle Allan and Uncle Phillip had the frying pan/whiskey bottle incident.  And we all know there's no way we can prevent Uncle Phillip from leaving the whiskey at home so extra measures are being taken to keep him occupied.

Well that's probably too much detail just to let you know I'll be away, but as I was saying to someone else recently; I should never be left alone with a keyboard and too much coffee late at night.

The family reunion went

jaibyrd — Tue, 08/26/2008 - 23:59

The family reunion went surprisingly well and quite sedate comparitively.  Well I am back and in one piece, though was a bit tender after Thurs/Friday/Saturday (50th anniversary in Edmonton) and Sunday/Monday/Tues (start of the Reunion in Calgary)drinking festivites and believe it or not did not fall on the dance floor or into the lake/fire at any point in the events.  All is well in my family, at least all was well for the few days I was with them, I'm sure if I had stayed longer the cracks in everyone's niceness would've been more apparent.  Frankly it was lovely to go to a family reunion and not leave hating more people than when I had arrived.  Although it was a tame event one of my brothers and my sister's boyfriend went and watched strippers at 3 in the morning and were in BIG trouble with said wife/girlfriend.  They also were in trouble with all of us for driving drunk...

My sons and I rocked the Rock Band game (our band is called the Viking Spit) and ruled the basement (I'm pretty sure that the plastic viking helmet with the horns coming out each side made the rock goddess more capable and threw our competition into a frenzy of costuming that didn't even come close to the magnificance that was Viking Spit), Hubby held the court at ten thousand (a game played with dice), we did a respectible one act play featuring the Rolling Stones and Patti Smith, and of course we all had fun with the Bocchi ball game.  I still think our house rules game of Trivial Pursuit would be banned in many countries but we sure have a good time playing it.  And I remind everyone that is playing flashlight tag....10 million candle power flashlights are very heavy to carry around when running in the dark and can momentarily blind people when said person is lit up and if said blinded party accidently knock over the flowers at that point it doesn't count against them.

The 50th wedding anniversary party of my hubby's parents was also fun in a sedate formal dinner/dance sort of way.  Next time when we have a dance for that age of people we will make them dance more and drink less.  And I'm still saying someone else must've been drinking that scotch as well because I'm almost certain that I didn't finish the whole thing alone.

So basically it's wonderful to be home and to be playing wow again.

O yes, don't get me wrong.

jaibyrd — Tue, 08/05/2008 - 09:53

O yes, don't get me wrong. We all fiercely love and will defend to our dying breath any member of this family from any outside threat...we just like to rip each other apart ourselves and enjoy doing it and talking about it and joking about it all later.  ;-)

There are just a few things I've learned (the hard way of course) over the years;

1. do NOT ever try to talk about Religion at a family gathering.  Especially if my Mom is there it's gonna get ugly really quickly (I'm not religious...she is).

2. Always have an activity planned.  Sitting around and talking is not an activity that ends well.

3. 'Old family secret recipe' is codeword for 'I bought it this morning at the grocery store'

4. Keep the children occupied...somewhere else, and take turns they can wear out a full grown adult in about 1 1/2 hrs.

Sounds a bit like when my dad and his brothers get together. Except they're all just drunk and looking for fun. Nothing angry.

Sounds like equal parts fun and disaster-waiting-to-happen.

Let us know how it goes!
