Focus Magic vs. Icy veins
Alprazalam — Tue, 11/11/2008 - 22:30
I know I'm going to go fire in WOTLK, but I've been really curious about the arcane tree and always wandered why I never see anyone get Focus Magic. So I know I'm going here http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZcEcbRhIhVubGst but why not finish with this http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=of0VzzZcEcbRhIhVubGst
BENEFITS
Both tier 1 talents will help with AOE. As far as I can tell, every fire mage will eventually cast AE.
Clear Casting
periodic 3% chance to critically hit (idk how much spell crit mages will have in Wrath, but in BC, most had atleast 30%, therefore every nine seconds or less, it would proc)
2% increased spell damage on Scorch, Fireball, Fireblast(for when u have to move) and AE.
Your giving another one of ur spell casters 3% crit. Gues you could say that it helps with Raid synergy.
DOWNFALLS
If you happen to be facing something that is immune to fire, u have to cast a 3 sec frostbolt.
NO Icy Veins I understand that will have a huge impact on single target enemies, but hoping the 3% to crit and 2% extra damage will compensate.
NO 20% CD on Ice Block, and theres alot of times I wished I could have IBed but it was still on CD.
NO extra 3% to hit or 3% mana reduction. I know Clear Casting will compensate for the 3% mana reduction, but I also know how hard it was for me to reach hit cap in BC WITH this talent.( I will say, I didn't see any t5 material, so I had to farm Kara, craft items, and gem most of my hit)
Basically, I think it comes down to is Icy Veins (with 20% CD reduction) and 3% to hit more single target dps than 3% to crit and 2% extra damage on scorch and Fireball.
BTW, want to say that I know I ask alot of questions (just ask Karli and Shinso =P), but I have no idea where to go to answer most of my questions, and thanx to public school systems, all I know how to do is ask questions.

remeber if you're just
Keisjaa — Tue, 11/11/2008 - 23:02remeber if you're just leveling you only need about 5%hit total(i think that's even level mob cap)
4% same level 5% +1 level 6%
saedo — Tue, 11/11/2008 - 23:054% same level
5% +1 level
6% +2 levels
17% +3 levels
Option to tackle those higher level mobs if you got the gear for it.
yeah i always forget the
Keisjaa — Tue, 11/11/2008 - 23:42yeah i always forget the exact numbers for each step i just know to aim for 5%
anyhow..back to commenting on pics & whatnot
realms really need to come back online
Elemental precision + Icy
Dufe — Tue, 11/11/2008 - 22:56Elemental precision + Icy Veins should considerably outweigh the other option.

This is the raiding fire spec I'd assume that'd become most popular. However the arcane impact talent looks a little appealing...

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some mages specced along those lines.
I, personally will be speccing this if I do any raiding on my mage ;p.

Something along these lines might be a fun / interesting spec to try out. Maybe Dufe can confirm/deny if fingers of frost/torment the weak have any synergy? From what I understand being "frozen" counts as a snare - and thus may make torment the weak an actually viable talent?
I know it's rough, but: (15%
Dufe — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 06:50I know it's rough, but: (15% chance to "count as frozen")x(12% damage to snared targets)x(next two spells)=at most 0.43% overall dmg increase? Fun idea, but I don't think the numbers work out well enough to justify the talent expenditure even if it does work.

will be the rading spec pretty much. Deep fire frostfire is the way to go.
As per Elitist Jerks math,
Dufe — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 06:52As per Elitist Jerks math, Fireball rotation w/Deep Fire still beats Frostfire specs at level 80 by 5-7%.
I don't know for 100% how Atar is going to feel about it in Raid: Salmon, but for the as yet un-named Wrath Raid 1, I know mages (and other dps) will be expected to come as their top dps spec, not another spec that they think is "the most fun." Mages had alot more leeway with this in TBS, as the specs weren't quite so far apart dps-wise. To re-hash from other posts:
everything I have seen
Shinso — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 09:58everything I have seen recently says FFB is the best spec barring an unrealistic situation. I know roywyns sig was really outdated with like alpha information.

Dufe — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 10:42For starters, I'm not a huge fan of Sondag or Roywyn, or of SimCraft(yet, still needs time). Both of them make assumptions that aren't 100% valid, ie, are more condidtional in reality but used as absolutes in their math. I tend to rely more on Vontre and Manly's input. Second, even in the link in Roywyn's own sig, the Fireball spec is ahead of the FFB one.
Your taking that placement
Shinso — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 11:50Your taking that placement out of context. The fireball spec thats ahead is a Torment one, which means you need a deep arcane mage casting slow every 15 seconds. Very unrealistic and will probably never happen unless the raid happens to have like 4+ mages. It's TC the only raid viable spec that competes with raid viable specs from other classes is FFB.
Agreed, I didn't care enough
Dufe — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 12:02Agreed, I didn't care enough to look at those graphs from his sig in that much detail to be honest. But my other statement still stands. I haven't had much time to read in the last week or so, but unless some of the more reliable TC guys have made updated projections in that time (which is possible), I still can't agree with a few of Roywyn and Sondag's underlying assumptions and corresponding model inputs.

Disrupter — Wed, 11/12/2008 - 09:27I can't think of a mage that played around with their spec as much as I did in our lovely "little" guild ;p.
I'll keep that "title" as I'm screwing around in alt run 10 mans in the future. My spec directly had to do with what we were running that night and if I had pvp'd earlier that day. If I never pvp'd, and we were in sunwell on Brutallus I'd probably never respec from fire ;p. But I was pvping and we were still doing Hyjal/Bt! So, I had to have some fun speccing around ;p.
I'm hoping that any spec room I had been allowed had to do with my general decent dps scores on the meters :D.
