Yes, my computer has crashed and yes I backed up some stuff (music, pictures, contacts)...and the backups failed. And I lost everything and I SHOULD have known to get an external backup thingy and put it off. I am now paying for it and will be busy for the next few days trying to reinstall everything I can remember that I want on my computer, and finding the discs that are supposed to be in the box clearly labeled 'computer discs' and my sons have somewhere in the warrens they call their rooms.

Thanks both of you! I'm going

You can take the old hard
garreth — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 22:47You can take the old hard drive, and attach it to the new system you build and pull all your data right off of it. You have to "take control" of your document folder on the old drive that is now connected to the new one. This might help: http://www.winvistaclub.com/forum/windows-tips-tutorials-articles/18379-how-take-ownership-full-control-permissions-files-folders-vista.html
Just one time I'd like
jaibyrd — Mon, 03/23/2009 - 08:04Just one time I'd like something to happen to my computer that I understood with out having to learn some completely new and confusing skill to perform. Thanks for the help Garreth; it does help to know there are a whole heap of intelligent knowledgeable computer wizards hanging out in the DF forums who will answer questions and give tips. Back to the wow install.
Some stuff saved. Not my
jaibyrd — Mon, 03/23/2009 - 10:43Some stuff saved. Not my itunes however. Before I randomly start downloading programs from the net does anyone have a suggestion for a relatively harmless program that will download from an ipod to itunes?
I used WinAmp
garreth — Mon, 03/23/2009 - 16:17I used WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com/) for a long time. Love it! I moved over to Songbird (http://getsongbird.com/) since it's built by the Firefox team and is open source. Both will pull audio OFF an iPod TO a hard drive.
ipod rescue
moriella — Mon, 03/23/2009 - 11:03Download WinAmp. It will allow you to pull files off your ipod and xfer them to your computer
A crashed hard drive is
garreth — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 20:12A crashed hard drive is RARELY lost. If you have documents and pictures and what not that you consider valuable DO NOT OVERWRITE THIS HARD DRIVE.
Get a new one, use that to install whatever OS you use and save the old drive. There are many ways to salvage data off an old "crashed" drive.
Actually the hard drive
jaibyrd — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 21:28Actually the hard drive checked out fine. It was the OS that crashed. And there was no way to retrieve it or anything on it. I did copy many of my photos to facebook albums and to shutterfly (where I scrapbook) so with a cool addon to Firefox called Facepad I can copy my albums back to my computer. Its the reduntant redunancy that saved the pictures. Now I need to find a way to copy my ipod back to my itunes and I'll be a happy camper. Everything else I do have hardcopies of (redunant?) and can update.
It's a good reminder to myself to stop procrastinating and get that dang external backup going that's for sure.
