State of Curse Client
Ewiges — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 14:49
So I just got home and the first thing I noticed was the change of the Curse Client. Appropriately, looking at the shutbox others have already noticed this. On top of that, I also see an article on wowinsider about it too. But because I'm human, and since there hasn't been anything posted here yet, here it is.
To sum it up, taken directly from wowinside: "Curse has released a premium version of their add-on client. The service they are offering goes for $30 a year on their annual plan, or $5/month if you choose to pay like that. There are some features of the premium client worth looking at if you're interested in spending the money."
Not a bad thing, wowinsider gives it a pretty good rating. It has some awesome freatures that a hardcore wowplayer and a casual player would want.
BUT, WE HAD ALL OF THIS FOR FREE!!!
So now for the typical freatures we expect out of curse insider such as 'update all addons' and the quick install rates, we no longer have. Now you must manually click each of your addons and press update. Fortunately for me, I only have about 8 addons according to the curse client, the rest are all dependancies. Secondly, of course this could just be bad timing, my addons took more than noticeably, rather significantly longer to update now.
The best part of the premium service that I noticed is that the money goes to help support addon developers. I couldn't find how much of each dollar does and for all we know it could be like the Christian Child thingy on television which shows in the fine print 7 cents per each dollar.

More info on the WI

Looks promising. And native Linux client!
Coincidentally, WoWInterface
saedo — Wed, 05/06/2009 - 15:08Coincidentally, WoWInterface also presented news of their upcoming addon program Minion: http://www.wowinterface.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23276
It sounds like it has potential... Promises of no feature locking for them at least, just ads for free versions. Modules to hook into other sites to add functionality, which sounds like some one needs to make a Curse one to allow it to download from Curse. Though Curse prob has to do that themselves, and prob will charge for it.
Well, will have to see when they release it.
This took a pretty kick-ass
garreth — Wed, 05/06/2009 - 10:42This took a pretty kick-ass turn today: http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/05/06/wowmatrix-responds-to-curse-and-wow...
I'm back in the WoWMatrix camp. Seems that they're above-board on this and playing fair. Go WoWMatrix! Write your favorite addon authors!
Sweet, I've always still used
saedo — Wed, 05/06/2009 - 11:26Sweet, I've always still used it as a wow launcher to see what was still available to update. Now hopefully they have enough so I can drop the Curse/WowInterace manual website visits lol
Yeah, its pretty much what G
Ewiges — Wed, 05/06/2009 - 12:36Yeah, its pretty much what G said. Its all in the author's hands now. Hopefully these authors prefer the wowmatrix donations better than curse trying to get money from donators.
If guy A has $5 and wants to donate to author, curse costs $5 but $4 goes to curse while wowmatrix $5 goes to author, therefor wowmatrix is greater than curse.
yeah, I passed math bitches. So lets go authors!!!
btw, curse slept with my girlfriend . (
Sounds fishy.
Prime8 — Sat, 05/02/2009 - 12:30Curse: "We stay alive through advertisements. We're shutting down WoWMatrix because it hurts our advertising when people use it instead of our site. Plus they're totally stealing our internets."
Curse (2 Weeks later): "Now that we have our advertising ability back, and you don't have any other viable options, we're going to further gimp our already gimped client for anyone not paying us directly, but seriously, we'll give some of the money to people who make our living for us. Really, we will. So if you could just turn around and bend over a bit, that'd be great."
I couldnt agree more with
Knoppix (not verified) — Sun, 05/03/2009 - 18:57I couldnt agree more with this post...they are selfish and greedy and using talented peoples free time to make success for themself.
I hope Curse gets a horrible turnout on their decisions and that they rethink their lame selfih marketing goal.
Someone had said that
bluetouguyss — Sun, 05/03/2009 - 20:14Someone had said that wowmatrix was fixed so I downloaded it again only to be dissappointed. they still are blocked by wowinterface and curse. :( I tried to copy and paste what the highlighted "read me" button said but that doesnt work so I will just summarize.
This addon is currently being blocked by said jackasses. While we dont agree with their decision and their timing (on the day of the release of 3.1) we respect their position. If you know the owner of the addon let us know and we will try and bring it on our site.
The addons they do have some of them now come up after you have updated the addon with a direct link to donate straight to the owner of the addon which I think is GREAT (take notice curse you JACKASSES!!!) Anyway I thought an update or lack of an update on this situation was needed.
I am tempted to contact each
Knoppix (not verified) — Sun, 05/03/2009 - 22:18I am tempted to contact each author and host addons for or guild alone for all the mods we use as well as write an updater for guild use only. I have a deticated server that I own on a T1 that I might use for this, just an idea what do you all think?. I am really tired of selfish sites like Curse making money off someone elses time writting a mod AND they dont even have to support the bugs the authors do! I am highly tempted to do this unless WoWMatrix can do something similar by allowing the authors to update their addon when it is released directly to the WoWMatrix site.
OMG and Garreth maybe I will write it in MONO so that it will run perfectly on every OS in its native environment even Linux without Wine :)
If you do this in Mono, you'd
garreth — Sun, 05/03/2009 - 22:56If you do this in Mono, you'd be a GOD.
I tried WoWmatrix today
Ewiges — Mon, 05/04/2009 - 02:33I tried WoWmatrix today immediately after updating on curseclient.
It showed 2 mods needing update.
Both of these mods had older versions when it claimed "NEW" version. Seems wowmatrix can not count and did not realize 1.01 is newer than 1.00.
Out of these two, one of them asked me if I liked to donate.
I tried WoWMatrix again
garreth — Sun, 05/03/2009 - 20:45I tried WoWMatrix again today. I do appreciate their direct DONATE TO THIS AUTHOR button for all the addons I downloaded. I did, in fact, donate to the authors of BigWigs because of this. Hey, maybe they can enjoy a latte on me tomorrow morning!
I would like to see some kind
Nuitarin — Thu, 04/30/2009 - 09:25I would like to see some kind of money going to the addon developers to pay for their time or site hosting or whatever. Question is, with the new Blizz policy, how is the best way to do this? I would like to see more than 20% of the curse fee go to addon development. Does the hosting of the mods really cost that much?
Found some more info on http://www.curseforge.com/ that talks about authors and the new premium client. Here is the direct link.
This is bullshit, looks like
Knoppix (not verified) — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 23:28This is bullshit, looks like I will be looking for another updater...having to click on 20+ mods to update is useless. Also the new download speed is outrageous....they are throttling it. Took like 30 seconds to download a 62KB addon.
EXACTLY!!! Curse is
bluetouguyss — Thu, 04/30/2009 - 20:59EXACTLY!!! Curse is terribad!
donations
moriella — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 16:05WowMatrix is working perfectly. They have changed the client slightly so that anytime you update or download you are given an option to donate directly to the author. It's unknown if they are hosting the files themselves
I trust you, but I'd like to
Shihli — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 16:24I trust you, but I'd like to see where that was posted?
posted?
moriella — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 16:51I dont know that it's posted anywhere. Simply a personal observation? I tried it, and that was the result. I'm not even sure what you are calling into 'trust' here. I just reported that the site is alive and well and after I used the client , it offered a chance to donate.
It's "alive" if the mod isn't
saedo — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 17:27It's "alive" if the mod isn't directly hosted on Curse or WoWInterface. You'll see a "Read Me" link for all those that are.
The bigger mods that have their own website are obviously updatable. Like DBM, Outfitter, Auctioneer, etc.
I'd like to see more on the
garreth — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 14:54I'd like to see more on the money going to developers thing. If that's the case, I have ZERO problem paying $5 a month for the curse updater. It would be a great way to support the people that make our raiding lives easier :)
I'd rather support the people
Shihli — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 15:38I'd rather support the people directly, as opposed to the majority of my donations going to curse.com
I read on one of their forum
Keisjaa — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 15:31I read on one of their forum threads that 20% goes to addon developers(and based on the addons popularity) pretty sad honestly and even worse so when you think of class specific mods that may be crippled in their "popularity"
The problem I have with curse
bluetouguyss — Wed, 04/29/2009 - 19:52The problem I have with curse is it really only encompasses about 1/3rd of my current addons. Where wowmatrix updated them all. The other 2/3's I have to go and manually update which is ok but just annoying.
I will never like what they did to wowmatrix but I understand it from a business point of view.
