It is few and far between

Shihli, you couldn't have posted your comment like five minutes sooner?
Do you know how LONG it took me to write my 'no' vote and recommenations.
geez......
You can still post it!

Fjork — Sun, 06/28/2009 - 12:28Long and short (cause I don't remember it all.)
It is few and far between that I actually give my 'vote' on an application. However, as a dedicated Tankadin, theorycrafter, and member of this community, I will be giving my vote.
Kit,
Therefore, sadly, you have proven your inability to be a part of this community due to not only your inability to function in our community, but that your raid-abilites don't even BEGIN to make up for your massive failure as a raider. (From Ghli: Good Gear != Good Player)
Downfall is a community FIRST and raiding guild SECOND. That means that ANY on of our tanks can comment on YOUR gear and YOUR performance. ANYONE who raids with us can expect it. I've commented negatively on Garreth, Shihli and a number of others. Why? Because we are a community bent on being the best we can be. We take ALL advice that is given, then we check to see if it's valid. If it isn't, it isn't. If it is, WE CHANGE.
Don't believe me? I went and looked up how/why you did what you did and tanked the way to tanked to see if I should change the way I tank. I honestly did, but (as my previous theorycrafting indicated) you were wrong.
A few things to keep in mind for your future applications to guilds:
If you are unable to do any of these things?
Go away. Go play Darkfall. There you can be solo, a complete sob, nothing about your class, and still have fun.
In conclusion, sadly, my 'vote' is 'No' on this tankadin. I say sadly because I normally spend HOURS with each of or tanking paladin applications because I <3 tanking and I <3 tanking paladins. It is my favorite part of wow. However, you have proven yourself unable to be worked with. Have a good day.
Going to close this
Shihli — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 11:25Going to close this application. Unwilling to compromise, responds poorly to criticism, does not respond well to the fact that some of his gear and spec choices are just plain bad.
Furthermore, we don't really need another tank anyway.
He already said he'll look
saedo — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 11:40He already said he'll look for another guild.
So closing it is even more
Shihli — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 11:48So closing it is even more justified.
Something you should know
Aidin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 11:18Something you should know about Downfall...we value a good attitude over everything. You've argued why you're research is better then the majority, who should be allowed to criticize you and who shouldn't, you've indirectly told the best pally tank on the server that he doesn't have a clue.
But not one time in this did you do it with grace, you're punchy and defensive. And honestly if you can't come across as agreeable/intellegent/willing to learn...you'll never make it in gchat or raid. I vote a resounding no.
NO
Dragon — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 10:28Regarding DPS/Damage/TPS as a tank and tanking high level bosses.
IT IS IMPORTANT. You say that you want into Ulduar ASAP yet you don't think tanks are meant to do damage. I don't care if you have a way to dodge or parry EVERY attack, it doesn't mean a thing if you can't keep a hold of the boss.
This in turn leads me into Seal of Vengeance and it's glyph. First of all the glyph is a flat 10 expertise. As a tank Expertise is doubly useful for a tank up to the soft cap of 26 Expertise. The reason being that it reduces the amount of dodge and parry from a boss. Bosses have a 6.5% chance to dodge and a higher than that chance to parry. When they parry their next attack comes 40% faster. Thus even going slightly beyond the soft cap by using the Glyph of Seal of Vengeance is quite nice. Additionally what makes SoV good is that it stacks off of HotR. Which means you can have 3 and in your case 4 mobs with high amounts of aggro beyond righteousness.
Our dps in this guild look at tanks at the top of omen and lick their chops. We WILL be trying to beat you in threat, because it means we are maximizing our dps for the sake of this argument. You doing more threat and damage means your dps can unload even more.
Also in Ulduar many bosses have a soft enrage timer for their hard mode (aka a dps race). Yes your DPS is gonna be going all out which means YOU need to go all out. Not just because you want the hard mode loot as well but because you will be losing aggro on the boss if you don't.
That being said, here are my suggestions for you:
#1. Get Defense or Block Value to your shield ahead of stamina. The first helps you with a lil bit of mitigation all around and a very small increase in threat. The last gives you a more focused look at one mitigation stat although it is the worst until 3.2
#2. Lets get Armsman onto your gloves instead of Stam. The extra threat from the Gloves is amazing and a little bit of extra mitigation to go with it.
#3. Pick up Pursuit of Justice in ret at the expense of 2 crit from Conviction. There is only 1 raiding paladin spec that doesn't take it which is a Holy/Prot healing build. Which pretty much means anyone who is taking points in the Retribution tree takes it. This will let you get outta the shit on the ground faster and let you get to and from the boss faster for more threat. Plus the randomly added disarm reduction is nice in heroics.
#4. GET GLYPH OF VENGEANCE: Honestly mana should not be an issue for Prot, and always buffing yourself with Sanc over Kings (especially at your gear level) is tremendous. 3% free damage reduction is amazing and on top of that you get mana. Not to mention, if you are in dire need of mana to the point that 1 point in SA and Divine Plea aren't keeping you up, just switch to Seal of Wisdom long enough to build some up. Each target hit by Hammer of the Righteous has a chance to proc this seal. And it procs about 60% of the time.
#5. Lets go ahead and dump the 2 hit gems you have in your gear and pick up some defense/str gems to get the stam socket bonuses. Alternatively you can pick up Defense/Stam gear to get socket bonuses as well.
In conclusion - I would also suggest listening to various advice from Pudolski, Pedran, Kaluu, Grovinski, and Jayel all of whom are either 25m main raid prot paladins, or prot paladins that know theorycraft very well for it. Also go ahead and talk to people like Ataraxia, Nuitarin, Orky, Ensidious, Foreverstar who are also 25m Main Tanks for our raids. That is a huge wealth of tanking knowlege available to you to pick clean.
Disclaimer: My spec is Ret (Seraphitalia) however I have tanked a lot on both my Paladin and my Warrior in LK so I'm not just spewing shit outta my ass here.

Being Neutral
primistic — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 09:48This post kinda getting too much heat...
Just wish to be a neutral party..
1. I think the best persons to comment will be prot pallies(Epat) or other tanks like Nuit, Orky or MT/OT from Salmon side.. People who do have alts as pally, pardon me, do you tank as much as those mains?
2. Saedo is our JC expert. He normally inspect those apps whose prof are JC. "I'd say putting a Prismatic Gem in your bracer BS socket is a bad idea" is something you, KITSUNESHIN should change. But I believe when he said "Also, do you really need to gem hit rating as a tank?", he's asking for a reason, not telling u to change.
3. A person definitely has his way of playing his class in his own style.. For example, healing in tree form between STAR and me, I totally spec differently from STAR. Do I fail? I can proudly say NO as me and STAR half of the time rock the healing meter. So if I'm a new guy who applied to DF, do I really need to spec the same as STAR? Even to compare CROMI and STAR, both I believe to be almost the same spec, but why STAR still outheal CROMI so much? Becos STAR has a better rotation healing than CROMI. I believe the best way for KITSUNESHIN to perform is a live practical. Join our Torvo's raid or any other raid when we in need a tank.
4. MORI, I respect you a lot, but I just want to say this. "Are you willing to respec for raid/guild needs?" For this statement, I believe is to respec whatever the raid/guild needs and not fine-tune his current spec. If the raid needs a healer, a dps / tank will have to be a healer. As of I used to switch between heal and dps some time back.
5. KITSUNESHIN, it is good that you are confident of your class.. but humble and politeness is the way for a lot of things.. be it an app to a guild or a job interview. No one voted you in and many have rejected your app.
As I said, I'm just giving my neutral 2c..
Lastly, as a DF member, I voted no and I wish you good luck in other guilds' applications..
Thank you very much for your
kitsuneshin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 09:56Thank you very much for your response Primistic. I am happy to hear your kind of response which is more an evaluation and less of an attack. I have changed my gems as suggested, all of my comments on that were about why I hadn't before the application.
If I have been rude, then I appologize. I am very humble and polite, as long as others are. I just get defensive when people get aggressive, I don't sit there and take it.
Even if I got in, as it is, things wouldn't work since there's conflict between me and the other tanks. I'll search for another guild, thank you all for your time though.
Look you said yourself that
saedo — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 10:43Look you said yourself that you're spec'ing for pugs, spec'ing for personal survivability (never trust the healers kind of surviviability).
But this is a hard mode 25 man Ulduar guild. You never experience threat problems? You haven't seen real dps. I can personally pull aggro off any tank if I choose (or just not being careful). I just have ways to manage threat, but not all classes have it as good.
Our advice stems from our experience. Clearly if anything if not gear or skill, a fair chunk of us have that over you. You may be good enough for pugs, but we want better, and everyone's perfectly willing to help with that. If only you were more receptive.
Anyways, good luck out there then.
I don't like this app's
pulga — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 07:51I don't like this app's attitude. Saying stuff like only certain people have the right to criticize his gear to the guild he's apping to doesn't really fly with me. And we do have plenty of tanks that are geared better then you. I'd go as far to say that I'm about on par with you, and I'm not in a 25 man due to the fact that we have plenty of awesome tanks already, so what makes you so much better that we should take you? And also the overall sense that he isn't willing to do anything to make his toon better within reason. I can't really comment on his knowledge of the class since I don't know jack about how protadins work. I see the crafted ring. Why don't you have the valor ring yet? It's only 25 badges. With ulduar 10 giving you valor badges for non-hard modes, you should have plenty of badges, yet no badge ring. Just a couple of things I've noticed. As of now I'm giving the thumbs down.
If you looked up my gear, you
kitsuneshin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 08:15If you looked up my gear, you would see that it is third best out of Downfall for tanks. I'm not saying that people don't have a right to criticize it, only that to try and say I have a long ways to go for gear for the guild when i'm better geared than a huge portion of it is bullshit.
I haven't bought the valor ring because it is hardly an upgrade. In the sense of the slot, it is, but it wouldnt' be best for my gear overall. Please look at more than just ilvl.
Only an idiot would change his toon because someone says to. I will do any change that I see as beneficial, not because someone who is considered a great tank in the guild says to. I already have done some changes suggested, which you would notice if you had read for more than 5 minutes :/.
And you give me lip back.
pulga — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 08:50And you give me lip back. And I just checked be imba, and guess what, my gear score is also better then yours. Just throwing that out there. So I don't know where you're getting your ranks from, but they're wrong. And you should have the valor ring, because there's expertise on it, and more defense on it, so you could work it in for some encounters I bet. So again, I give another thumbs down. And I'll throw an additional thumbs down in this time.
Your gear is irrelevant.
Shihli — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 11:22Your gear is irrelevant.

Come back when you've been enlightned somewhat with tankadins. It will explain your "mana" problems(stop farting consecrates), talent specs( why 5/5 divinity isn't that great when you already have imp devo speced), and what gems/enchants you should get.
Well.... I had a rather
Fjork — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 01:42Well....
I had a rather detailed reply, and I've been reading / thinking on this app for 30 minutes.
Kit: You need to research your class and spec a little better. The mitigation stats, the damage stats (yes, dps. The sooner the boss dies, the easier you have, but minimally important), expertise, hit, and more.
I just don't have the willpower here at 3:00am to give you the stats/documentation to dispute alot of what you are thinking / assuming. Just know that I've spent HOURS theorycrafting with Ghli and Seraphitalia on Tankadins, yet still Epat, Grov, and a number of others are our equals in theorycrafting the tankadins.
Then come back with your thoughts on TPS, overall threat generation, overall mitigation, etc.
The mitigation is the one you might research the most IMO. You don't gem Expertise? That's fine, but then why wouldn't you be using the Glyph of SoV for the +10 Expertise Skill? That's roughly 3-4% direction redux on bosses parry/dodge, which is VERY useful for not taking a double-hatestrike, etc. So you don't want to do Expertise at all? Great. Why? How much mitigation are you getting out of not doing it?
Order of thoughts (again, 3:00am, probably missing something):
Just some thoughts.....
Good luck on your application, but you have a ways to go, in gear, raid-utility (what YOU bring to a raid), and in class/spec knowledge.
Believe me, i've researched
kitsuneshin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 05:08Believe me, i've researched my class. I know my mitigation and such very well. go view elitist jerks sometimes, they're more detailed than maintankadin.
Dps is not important for a tank in the sense of damage. Yes, a boss will die sooner and the fight may be easier for healers, but in any half decent raid tanks will be 19th and 20th in dps. We don't even do 2% of the damage to the boss usually, so 5 or 6 seconds of a fight won't change anything. Hit and expertise for the sake of damage are the same. These three stats are only for the sake of threat. Between hit and expertise, hit is MUCH more useful as it affects all of your attacks while expertise only affects HoW and white attacks.
I said I"m not going to gem expertise, not that I'm not doing. I have 25 expertise rating now, which is 5.75%. Before you even try and tell me to work on your threory, come to an agreement with the other tanks because the 3 of you are saying completely opposite things.
The reason I don't use that glyph is because Prot pallies never use SoV. A prot pally should either be using seal of healing for survivability or seal of mana so that mana issues don't arise. As I've said before, the only time I have mana issues is in 10 mans, and I used SA to fix that because I didn't see any other worthwhile skills. Running with a decent guild is entirely different from pugs/ weak guild runs. Everything you tanks have said is based on threat generation and trying to improve it. Not a single post has had to do with survivability. I didnt' see the value in such things before because I always held aggro by at least twice as much threat as any other player, but I have already changed to what is suggested since I will be dealing with better dps than I have ever seen and healers.
Only Pudolski and nobooru have any right to say something like that about my gear, as they are the only tanks better geared than me in Downfall and not by all that much. As for raid utility, I have never had an issue with lack of survivability or the ability to tank. I may have mistakes every now and then on the fights i'm not too familiar with, but as long as I know a fight I am rarely the reason behind a wipe. I know how to play my roll perfectly well, if you seem to think I am so clueless then please do some more research and visit elitist jerks as well.

Gear != skill
By your saying that "Only Pudolski and nobooru have any right to say something like that about my gear, as they are the only tanks better geared than me in Downfall and not by all that much" you just put yourself into a big hole....
We have other tanks that you neglected to say that can talk about your gear. They are the following: Orky (who is in a PvP/Arms spec for the weekend), Grovinski, and Ensidious. Another one is my pally when she is in her tanking gear which is avaliable at http://profiler.wowhead.com/?profile=10845245
Add in a t8 25-man tanking helm and a t8-man tanking chest in about, and I'll have 4 peices of t8 when i get 10 more conquest tokens. Doing an item by item comparison using wow-heroes between you and my gear(with the t8 helm and chest factored in).....I have 5 items that are "better" that yours and 1 item "worse" than yours.
In addition, the following sites give a gear score. I will compare your gear score to tanks that I know off the top of my head that are in Downfall, as well as my pally in tanking gear without a tier 8 tanking helm and chest:
Seems like you are next to the bottom of the barrel.
And you don't use SoV as a tanking seal? Are...you..... mad?????? Straight from elitistjerks.com under The Protection Paladin Field Manual (WoW-3.0/WotLK):
Seal of Vengeance/Corruption (SoV): This is generally considered the premier tanking seal, since a full stack deals more damage than SoR, and it can be kept active on multiple targets at the same time, especially with HotR.
In addition, if you are still running out of mana, do something that isn't mana intensive: stop consecrating, seal twist, don't use holy shield for a rotation so you do get hit, or even use a mana pot. If you are so worried about surviability, have your ret pally judge light (if there is one) or you judge light (if there is no ret pally).
Gear ilvl isn't everything,
kitsuneshin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 09:05Gear ilvl isn't everything, you must be joking to say that. Essence of gossamer and monarch crab are the best trinkets up until Heart of Iron and Royal Seal of King Llane. My ring is far better than the 213 ring, considering that I am well over cap for def rating, and I would much rather have the dodge rating than hit/expertise.
I will appologize for my mistake concerning tank status, I am 6th in the guild comparison. There isn't a huge gap in most comparisons however. Tier 8 isn't better than equivilent ilvls in those slots as the set bonuses aren't that big of a deal without 4 pieces.
Threat has never been an issue for me, I'd rather make it easier on the healers than to try for a bit of dps when that shouldn't even be considered. If threat ever becomes a problem, then I will reconsider the glyph and the seal.
I just ran some numbers in
Ghli — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 10:40I just ran some numbers in rawr for you and some of the known pally tanks in guild and something interesting came up....
Even though Rawr can be bad, it still can be used as a baseline. And using that baseline with no raid buffs, the following came out...
You have the lowest avoidance, not even blocked-capped (BC term was uncrusable which is avoidance +block+holy shield), lowest damage reduction, lowest migation, higest incoming damage, and lowest threat generated.
In other words......... why are you you even having mana problems, or do you have just crappy healers healing you?
I am curious if you cought me
Cdhabro — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 13:14I am curious if you cought me (haleth) in my block value//OT//Threat set, or my MT set. Tell me which shield it pulled from armory at the time you ran rawr.
I am going to agree with you
Nellem1 — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 09:49I am going to agree with you that gear is not everything. I have been a firm believer of this for a long time. I would rather take a player with lesser gear and more skill than a player with better gear and lesser skill. Now, with that said and I have already said I doubted your skill, you see where most of us stand about how you play your class.
imo it is this statement "I
Grasen — Fri, 06/26/2009 - 19:58imo it is this statement "I had absolutely no reason to waste money further improving my gear when I easily went above and beyond what was expected in my role." that shoots yourself in the foot for me,
entering my no vote now,
you missed this statement
moriella — Fri, 06/26/2009 - 20:11Are you willing to respec for raid/guild needs?:
"It depends"
Er, no I didn't? I"m not
kitsuneshin — Fri, 06/26/2009 - 20:16Er, no I didn't? I"m not going to respec unless it's shown to be better. "it depends" is there for a reason. I am willing to improve my character IF I see it as an improvement. I'm not going to be puddy to be shaped by the guild by every single member's opinion. My build hasn't had any problems up until now, so I'm not going to recklessly toy with it because a guildie said so.
Well, I look at it this way:
Nellem1 — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 00:12Well, I look at it this way: is gold such a rare commodity in WoW that it is not to be thrown away at regemming/respecing/enchanting as necessary as new gear/better spec's are brought forth?
To say that Seal of Corruption is only to be used for ret, then I question if you understand what it does. Seal of Corruption (www.wowhead.com/) is, how I read it and use it on my paladin, used to do more damage and thus more TPS (as you have so rightfully explained in important towards tanking). How does SoL (www.wowhead.com/) possibly help in this manner? You've shown you are down to debate all day long in regards to how important it is to increase your TPS. However, when a point in brought forth to you that directly points out how you can increase that (as more dps = more tps), you shoot down the idea as one that is rediculous.
On top of that, you speak of survivability. Okay, first things first.. you need to rationalize what the difference in increasing your overall hp vs decreasing how much damage you take. Having 33k unbuffed hp is good, that equals out to about 40k+ in 25 mans right? well, Im assuming at this point you have more than 1 paladin in raid and you will benefit from both buffs. However, decreasing your damage taken and increasing how much mana you have (since that aparently is an issue for you in some cases), is much more beneficial. More mana = more threat. Less damage taken = more survivability.
Im confused, you talk like you know what youre talking about (confidence), but some of the things you say stray away from that.
To insult someone's reference to a job interview, makes you look far from intelligent. The reference he was making was in regards to handling yourself during the interview (i.e. GUILD APPLICATION), you wouldn't debate (a small amount is acceptable, but should be avoided) a potential employer if you honestly wanted the position. Explaining yourself is fine, getting defensive is another. On top of that, flexibility is considered a very desirable trait for all aspects of life (including video games that require interaction between members). So to say that you're against making yourself better, yes better as arguing with one of the best Prot Paladins on the server who is attempting to show you how he does his job, is just dumb. If you think you know all, and feel as though you need no help, then I dont believe you would be in the situation that you are in right now. To be a main raider in Downfall, you're on a very long wait list. Along with 2 25 man hardmode raids, there are lots of other raids that happen. Most all of which are filled everytime they raid. It's not acceptable to wait for 3 months for a main raid spot? This guild isn't for you then. As the main raid groups are pretty much locked up with their members. When a spot is open, these are generally filled with players that those raid leaders have had the opportunity to experience their game play/ability, leaving some other raids to fill it with players who want a shot at a main raid.
Good luck to you, I believe you would be able to find a raid spot in a guild that is in absolute need of a tank. However, Downfall is not the best place for you.
You seem to have it
kitsuneshin — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 08:49You seem to have it backwards, I have argued against trading survivability for threat always. Threat is rarely ever an issue for paladins. Using just righteous fury and fighting, I can do close to 6k tps. Add in misdirects and trick of the trade, and no one would ever take aggro from me without taunting. Seal of Light isn't for TPS, it's for survivability. About the mana issue, that's been resolved but people keep on bringing it up. I had an issue with low quality healers meaning low mana regen. I haven't ever run with downfall so I don't know how their healers are, but I'm assuming they'd be better and my mana regen would be enough. I have already altered my spec, though no one seems to reallize it. Don't skim over everything and claim to be up to date.
If this were a job interview, I would be talking to garreth only. None of you would speak on it. Employees don't judge applications to a job, the employer does. That is what I was saying. Also, if you are ever applying for a job, you better be confident and willing to defend your position. No one wants a yes man. As for getting defensive, a potential employer would NEVER insult or attack in the first place.
"Arguing with one of the best Prot Paladins on th server who is attempting to show you how he does his job is just dumb". I don't have a problem with how he does it, only with him assuming I need to do it the exact same way. I am also one of the top Prot paladins on the server. I did not come to the guild for advice and to be shaped into a tank, I already am a fine one. I am willing to improve myself, but not to change myself into a copy of the other tanks.
Okay, you've not gone to a
Nellem1 — Sat, 06/27/2009 - 09:59Okay, you've not gone to a job that has multiple employers who, YES, sit around to talk to you and question you regarding your ability to make their workplace better. If you don't believe me, go interview a job that has thousands of people (aside from fast food restaraunts) and then you can gladly tell me that you would only speak to Garreth.
No one said to change yourself to be another tank. We suggested options to make you BETTER at tanking. That is all. From all your responses I've gotten, you've shown you do not care to make yourself better unless someone can outright prove every little detail. Now, your commitment to maintaining high standards is good, but your inability to see someone telling you what is better for your CLASS (i.e. you).. it makes you look a fool.
Chances are likely if youre in a 25 man raid, you have multiple paladins. This means that you are coordinating which seal/judgement you all are using. That is what you are after right? A 25 man raid? Regardless, hands down, Seal of Corruption is the best tanking seal in the game. At this point in the game, if survivability is that big of an issue for you.. then your raid has bigger issues. 6k TPS is fine, assuming you can maintain it completely. On top of that, you have to worry about hard hitting locks, mages, warriors, shamans, (insert class here) who, on average, are pulling 8k dps. The more threat, the better at that point. You are geared, yes, and so are your healers. Let them do their job, you do yours.
